How to pick the right one

Start with square footage. Match the stove's rated heating area to the space you actually want to heat, then size up if your climate's cold, your ceilings are high, or your house is older and drafty. Get this wrong in the other direction and you'll regret it: a stove that's too big gets run low, smolders, and burns dirty. Then check the ship date. A stove is not a two-day purchase. Freight to your curb takes one to two weeks after it leaves the warehouse, and then you still need the venting and the install booked. Work backwards from the first cold week you want heat — which this season means checking the live status on each pick.

Confirm EPA-2020 certification. Anything sold today should be certified. It means cleaner burning, less wood used, and a legal install in regions that require it.
