Wood Stove Blowers and Fans: How to Pick the Right One

A wood stove without a blower heats by radiation. The metal gets hot, and that heat spreads out from the stove in a slow circle. It works, but the room nearest the stove cooks while the far corners stay cool. A blower changes the distribution. It pushes the hot air off the stove and out into the room so the heat actually travels.
You'll feel the difference most in an open floor plan or a long room, where radiant heat alone struggles to reach the far end. In a small tight room a blower matters less, because the heat fills the space on its own.
Powered blower or heat-operated fan?
There are two ways to move the air, and they suit different setups.
A powered blower plugs in and runs on a motor, usually with a variable speed control so you can dial it up or down. It moves a lot of air, it's consistent, and most of them are wired to a thermodisc that switches the blower on once the stove reaches temperature and off when it cools down, so you're not blowing cold air at startup. The tradeoff is it needs an outlet nearby and it makes some noise at higher speeds.
A heat-operated fan sits on top of the stove and runs off the heat itself, no electricity at all. It uses the temperature difference between the hot base and cooler top to drive a small motor. It's silent, it needs no wiring, and it's the obvious pick for an off-grid cabin or anywhere you don't want a cord. It moves less air than a powered blower, so it's better at nudging air across a room than forcing heat into a large open space.
What CFM actually tells you
CFM is cubic feet per minute, the volume of air the blower moves. Higher CFM moves more air, which generally means better reach into a bigger room. A 130 CFM variable-speed blower has more push than a 100 CFM one, and a 178 CFM heat-operated fan moves a good amount of air for something that runs on nothing but stove heat. But don't fixate on the number alone. A blower at full tilt in a small room is just noise. Match the airflow roughly to the space, and if you've got a variable speed control you can tune it from there.
Matching it to your stove
Powered blowers aren't universal. They mount to a specific bracket or housing on the stove, so a Drolet blower is built for Drolet stoves and the model matters. The thermodisc that switches it on and off is also a matched part, and it's a common thing to replace when an older blower stops cycling correctly. Heat-operated stovetop fans are more forgiving since they just sit on the surface, but you still want enough flat space on top of the stove to set one.

Common questions
Does a blower make a wood stove heat more? Not more total heat. The fire produces the same output. The blower spreads that heat through the room instead of letting it pool around the stove, so the room feels more evenly warm and you may run the stove a little lower.
Why did my blower stop turning on? Often the thermodisc. It's the temperature switch that tells the blower when the stove is hot enough to run. When it fails, the blower either won't start or won't shut off. It's a replaceable part rather than a reason to replace the whole blower.
Do I need electricity for a stove fan? For a powered blower, yes. For a heat-operated stovetop fan, no. The heat-operated fan is the one to get if there's no outlet near the stove or you're off grid.
