Sizing a small pellet stove
Every model below still carries a manufacturer coverage rating of 1,500 sq ft or more, so you are not giving up heat to save floor space — what matters for a small room is how far a stove will turn down, not its maximum output. Measure your alcove or corner first, then add the clearances from the manual.
The 25-CBPAH is the outlier: its 120 lb hopper makes it the biggest cabinet here, so pick it for unattended burn time rather than for saving space. Buying a pad at the same time is cheaper — see the combo listings below. Full lineup in pellet stoves, or read the small pellet stove buying guide.

What size pellet stove for 500, 1,000 or 1,500 sq ft?
No pellet stove is rated for only 500 sq ft. Even the smallest models are rated to 1,500 sq ft or more, because the rating describes maximum output. For a small room, the number that matters is how low the stove can turn down:
- Around 500–1,000 sq ft: the Drolet ECO-55 turns down to about 6,650 BTU/h and the ComfortBilt HP21 to 12,349 BTU/h, so either can hold a small space without cycling on and off. The Ventis ECO-55 ST is built on the same ECO-55 platform with a bigger 80 lb hopper.
- Around 1,000–1,500 sq ft, or the tightest budget: the Alpine HP40 at $1,099 is the least expensive stove we sell and only 17" wide.
- Tight alcove or narrow hearth: the slim ComfortBilt HP50S, which is also the most efficient of the compact ComfortBilts.
- Fewer refills: the Alpine HP42 or Englander 25-CBPAH, both with 120 lb hoppers.

Small pellet stove FAQs
Does a small pellet stove need a chimney?
No. Pellet stoves use sealed 3" or 4" pellet vent pipe, usually run straight out through an exterior wall. The pellet stove venting guide covers the options.
Can a small pellet stove go in a mobile home?
The HP50S, HP21, ECO-55, ECO-55 ST and 25-CBPAH are mobile-home approved when installed with an outside air kit and bolted to the floor. For the Alpine models, check the owner's manual on the product page before ordering for a mobile home.
Do you charge sales tax on pellet stoves?
No. StoveSource charges no sales tax in any state, and stoves ship free with curbside freight to the lower 48.
