What's in a wood stove chimney kit (through the roof)
A through-the-roof install uses two kinds of pipe. Stove pipe runs from the stove up to the ceiling, and insulated Class A chimney takes over at the ceiling and goes through the attic and roof. From the top down you need:
- A chimney cap with a spark screen
- A storm collar and roof flashing matched to your roof pitch
- Class A chimney pipe, enough to reach the height the 3-2-10 rule sets
- An attic insulation shield, plus a firestop radiation shield at each extra floor
- A ceiling support box and stove pipe adapter
- Stove pipe: the 6" single wall to-the-ceiling kit covers 38–70 in, or sections plus a telescoping length
- An extended roof brace if the chimney stands more than 5 ft above the roof
The AllFuel HST through-the-ceiling kit bundles the cap, storm collar, flashing, attic shield, support box and adapter in one box, at the same price as buying them one by one.
Through-the-wall chimney kit
When there's a room above the stove or no way through the attic, the chimney goes out the wall and up the outside of the house. The AllFuel HST through-the-wall kit has the wall thimble, the short pipe that passes through the wall, an insulated tee with a clean-out cap, the base wall support, a wall bracket and the cap. You add Class A pipe up the wall, a wall bracket at least every 8 ft, and stove pipe from the stove to the wall, such as the 6" single wall to-the-wall kit.
How high does the chimney need to be above the roof?
NFPA 211 sets the 3-2-10 rule: the chimney has to extend at least 3 ft above the highest point where it passes through the roof, and at least 2 ft higher than any part of the building within 10 ft measured level. On a pitched roof the 2 ft / 10 ft part usually decides it, because the roof keeps rising toward the ridge. With the ridge 10 ft or more away, the chimney needs to stand this far above the roof:
| Roof pitch | Height above the roof | Roof brace? |
|---|---|---|
| Flat | 3 ft | No |
| 2/12 | 3 ft 8 in | No |
| 4/12 | 5 ft 4 in | Yes |
| 6/12 | 7 ft | Yes |
| 8/12 | 8 ft 8 in | Yes |
| 10/12 | 10 ft 4 in | Yes |
| 12/12 | 12 ft | Yes |
That's roof rise over 10 ft plus 2 ft. A chimney closer to the ridge needs less: the builder asks for your distance to the ridge and works it out exactly. Your stove also has a minimum total chimney height for good draft, usually 12–15 ft. The builder checks that too.
How much chimney pipe do I need?
Measure from the bottom of the ceiling support box (about 2 in below the ceiling) up through the attic to where the chimney leaves the roof, then add the height above the roof from the table. Every joint between Class A sections overlaps a little, so the builder allows 1½ in per section and always rounds up. For the stove pipe, measure from the top of the stove's flue collar to the bottom of the support box. A telescoping section takes up the exact length.
Single wall or double wall stove pipe?
Single wall stove pipe needs 18 in to anything that can burn. With SBI heat shields that drops to 6 in to walls and 9 in to the ceiling in the US. Double wall stove pipe is listed for 6 in and keeps the smoke hotter, which helps draft. Your stove's manual lists its own clearances: always use the larger number. See our wood stove clearance guide.
Common questions
What size chimney does my wood stove need? Match the flue collar. Every wood stove we sell has a 6 in flue, so it takes 6 in stove pipe and 6 in Class A chimney.
Can I mix chimney brands? No. Factory-built chimney is tested as a system, so the cap, pipe, supports and adapter all have to be the same brand. The builder only puts one brand in your list.
Do I need a permit? In most areas, yes, plus an inspection before you light the stove. The builder's list is a starting point; your stove's manual, its certification label and local code decide the final install.
Is there sales tax on a chimney kit? No. StoveSource charges no sales tax in any state, on the chimney kit or the stove.
Can you check my list? Yes. Use the "Email us your measurements" button and we'll reply with any changes, free.
