Double wall vs single wall stove pipe

Double wall pipe has a stainless inner pipe inside a black outer shell, with an air gap between them. That gap keeps the outside cooler, which is why it can sit 6" from a combustible wall instead of 18". Many stove manuals require double wall connector pipe to use their reduced wall and corner clearances. Where the pipe clearance and the stove clearance differ, use the larger.

Which pieces you need

• Straight up through the ceiling: the to-the-ceiling kit (VODBKTC06) has the stove adapter, a 38"–70" telescoping section and the screws. It connects to a Class A chimney support at the ceiling.
• Out through the wall: the to-the-wall kit (VODBKTW06) covers the run from the stove to the wall thimble.
• Building your own run: start with a stove adapter, add straight lengths and a telescoping section to take up the last few inches, and use 45° or 90° elbows for offsets.
• Stove collar isn't 6": use a 6" to 7" or 6" to 8" increaser, or a 7" to 6" or 8" to 6" reducer. Never reduce below the size your stove manual specifies.

Common questions

Can double wall stove pipe go through a wall or ceiling? No. It is connector pipe, and it must not pass through a wall, ceiling, floor, attic or closet, or be enclosed. Where the run leaves the room, switch to Class A chimney pipe.

Can I mix brands? Don't. Double wall pipe locks together in a system-specific joint, so build the whole connector run from Vortex parts.

Does a telescoping section change the clearance? A fixed run with no adjustable section is listed at 5". With a telescoping section, plan the run at 6".
