When to replace the baffle

  • Cracked through, sagging or crumbling. Hairline surface cracks are normal; a board that is broken through or sags between the burn tubes needs replacing.
  • Weak secondary burn. If the flames no longer roll along the top of the firebox, check the baffle and the burn tubes together.
  • Warped or burnt-through burn tubes. Secondary burn tubes are sold by stove model; find yours on your stove's parts page, for example Drolet Escape 1800 parts or Englander Blue Ridge 500 parts.

Vermiculite and C-Cast boards are brittle, so lift the old board out carefully and match the size and part number in your manual. Our baffle board guide walks through the job step by step. Pull a cracked fire brick while the baffle is out, and check the door gasket.
