Wood Stove Baffle Board Replacement: Sizes for Drolet, Englander, Osburn and Century

Updated October 16, 2026
The short version: The baffle is the insulated board across the top of your wood stove's firebox. On Drolet, Englander, Osburn, Century and Enerzone stoves it's a model-specific C-Cast, vermiculite or ceramic board, and two boards of the same size can be different materials. Find your stove in the chart below and order that part number. Measure the old board to confirm, and check the secondary air tubes while the baffle is out. Replacement boards run $37.99 to $260. Every board we carry is in wood stove baffle boards.
Every modern non-catalytic wood stove has a baffle. It sits above the fire, under the flue outlet, and forces the smoke and hot gases to travel forward past the secondary air tubes before they can leave. That's where the smoke burns off, and it's why a clean-burning stove has almost no visible smoke out the chimney. A cracked or collapsed baffle short-circuits all of that.

When to replace the baffle board
- Pieces missing or a visible gap. If you can see flame or the flue through the baffle, the gases are skipping the secondary burn.
- Sagging or bowed. A board that's dropped in the middle no longer seals against the sides of the firebox.
- Crumbling edges or soft spots. Common on vermiculite, especially where logs have hit it while loading.
- The stove runs hotter up the flue and burns more wood for the same heat, or you're seeing more smoke and creosote than you used to.
A thin hairline crack in a board that's still flat and whole can usually wait for the end of the season. Check the baffle every time you clean the chimney. It's easiest to inspect with the stove cold and the firebox empty, using a flashlight from below.
Find your baffle by stove model
Model names are the manufacturer's, including older and discontinued models, and every fitment below comes from the SBI replacement-parts lists. Use your browser's find (Ctrl+F, or Find in Page on a phone) and type your model. Some stoves use more than one board or an insulation layer on top of the baffle, so they have more than one part listed. Your manual's parts list shows how many of each your stove takes.
The model is on the stove's safety label and on the cover of the owner's manual. Drolet, Englander, Osburn, Century and Enerzone are all built by SBI, which is why one board can fit stoves from several of the brands. Our guide to the SBI brands explains how the models line up.
Baffle boards by size

If you've already measured the old board, these are the 18 boards with a published size, sorted from smallest to largest. Sizes come from SBI's part descriptions. Use the size to confirm the match, not to pick the part. The 13 7/16" x 6 3/4" x 1" board, for example, comes in vermiculite for the Drolet Fox and Spark II and in C-Cast for the Osburn 950. Same size, different part.

C-Cast, vermiculite or ceramic fiber
Most of the SBI boards are C-Cast, a rigid cast board. Smaller and older stoves like the Drolet Fox, Spark II and the Osburn 1800 use vermiculite, which is lighter and softer. A few Englander stoves use ceramic fiber board, and the old Drolet Whistler uses a stainless steel baffle. Stay with the material your stove was built with. They aren't interchangeable, even when the size matches.
Vermiculite boards chip when a split hits them during loading. Load from the front, keep the wood below the secondary air tubes, and a vermiculite baffle lasts a lot longer.
Secondary air tubes
The secondary air tubes are the perforated steel tubes just under the baffle. They feed preheated air into the top of the firebox so the smoke ignites. On most of these stoves the baffle rests on the tubes, and you remove one or more tubes to drop the baffle out, so check them whenever it comes out. Replace a tube that's warped, cracked or has burned-out holes. A sagging tube lets the baffle sag with it.
Replacing the baffle
Every stove is a little different, so follow the baffle removal steps in your owner's manual. The general pattern on these stoves:
- Let the stove go completely cold and clean out the ash.
- Remove the retaining pin or fastener on the front secondary air tube, if your stove has one, and take the tube out.
- Lift the front of the baffle, slide it forward and angle it down and out of the door. Boards in two pieces come out one at a time.
- Vacuum the top of the firebox and the flue collar. Creosote and fly ash collect above the baffle.
- Fit the new board in reverse, with it sitting flat on its supports and pushed fully back, then refit the tube and its pin.
If the door gasket is tired too, do it the same day. Our door gasket guide covers it, and a chimney cleaning with the baffle out is the easiest one you'll ever do. Every baffle board, baffle insulation and burn tube we carry is in wood stove baffle boards and burn tubes, with a chart for the stoves we sell. Cracked fire brick is the other wear part you will find with the baffle out; ours are sorted by size in wood stove fire brick. Everything we carry is in stove replacement parts, or by brand: Drolet, Englander, Osburn, Century and Enerzone.
Frequently asked questions
Can I run my wood stove without a baffle?
No. The baffle holds heat in the top of the firebox so the smoke burns off at the secondary air tubes. Without it, heat and unburned smoke go straight up the flue. You lose efficiency, build creosote faster and push more heat into the chimney than it was designed for. Replace a missing or collapsed baffle before you use the stove again.
Is a cracked baffle board a problem?
A hairline crack in a board that still sits flat and whole is not urgent. Pieces missing, sagging, crumbling edges or a gap you can see flame through mean it's time to replace it.
Can I cut a bigger baffle board down to fit?
We don't recommend it. SBI baffles are made for the specific firebox, and two boards can share a size but differ in material and thickness. Order the part number your stove's parts list calls for.
What is the difference between C-Cast and vermiculite baffles?
Both are insulating boards rated for the top of a firebox. C-Cast is a rigid cast board. Vermiculite is lighter and softer, so it chips more easily when a log hits it. Use the material your stove was built with, since they aren't swapped one for the other even at the same size.
Do I need to replace the secondary air tubes too?
Only if they're warped, cracked or burned through. Check them every time the baffle comes out, because most of these stoves rest the baffle on the tubes, and a sagging tube is often what breaks the board.
Does this guide cover Blaze King, Jotul or Vermont Castings?
No. These are genuine SBI parts for Drolet, Englander, Osburn, Century and Enerzone stoves. Other brands use their own baffle designs.
