Englander Blue Ridge 150-I Wood Insert (ESW0006)

The Englander Blue Ridge 150-I wood insert (model ESW0006) is the smallest insert in the Blue Ridge line, sized to turn a drafty masonry fireplace into a real heat source. It is rated for 250 to 1,200 sq ft, with a maximum heat output of 45,000 BTU/h, logs up to 17" and burn times up to 7 hours. EPA 2020 certified at 1.5 g/h, with 75% average overall efficiency (HHV) and 82% optimum efficiency. Non-catalytic, with a cast iron door frame and ceramic glass. A 90 CFM blower with thermodisc and a 26" x 42" steel faceplate come in the box. 6" flue outlet for a stainless chimney liner.

Who the Blue Ridge 150-I is for

The 150-I fits:

• Living rooms, family rooms and small homes or cabins up to about 1,200 sq ft, heated from an existing fireplace.
• Smaller and older masonry fireplaces: the tapered top and sides need a minimum opening of just 25" wide, 19" high and 15 1/2" deep.
• Owners who want to stop losing heat up an open chimney without building a new hearth.

Will it fit your fireplace?

The 150-I is for masonry fireplaces only. Measure the opening at the front: you need at least 25" of width, 19" of height and 15 1/2" of depth, plus at least 4" of extra width if you plan to add the 5" fresh air intake kit for inserts (AC01298). The included faceplate covers the gap between the insert and the fireplace face. If your opening is larger than the standard faceplate covers, the 32" x 44" cuttable faceplate (AC02082) can be trimmed to fit. Combustible side and top trim must be at least 1" from the faceplate. Firebox and loading

The firebox has an overall volume of 1.1 cu ft (1.03 cu ft EPA loading volume). Logs load east-west, side to side, up to 17" long; 16" splits are recommended. The door opening is 18 1/4" x 7 7/8", and the ceramic glass is 18 3/8" x 9", so the fire stays in view. The air control sits above the door and uses a removable handle, so it doesn't heat up between adjustments: right for high, left for low.

Burn time and heat output

With a dense load of dry cordwood the 150-I peaks at 45,000 BTU/h. Under EPA test conditions its overall heat output runs from 8,471 BTU/h on low to 31,700 BTU/h on high. The 7-hour maximum burn time is a best case; dry hardwood loaded tight and a liner that drafts well get you closest.

Blue Ridge 150-I vs. Escape 1500-I vs. Blue Ridge 300-I

If you need more heat or a longer burn, two larger SBI inserts take the same 6" liner. The Drolet Escape 1500-I is the next step up in heating area and firebox, and the Englander Blue Ridge 300-I goes up to 2,100 sq ft with 20" logs. Both need a larger fireplace opening than the 150-I, so measure first.

Blower

The 150-I comes with its blower: a 90 CFM tangential blower with a thermodisc, so it turns on only once the insert is hot and pushes heat out of the fireplace into the room. Turn the blower off before opening the door to reload so it doesn't blow ash out of the firebox.

Venting and installation

An insert vents through a stainless steel liner (UL 1777) that runs from the 6" flue collar to the top of the masonry chimney, at least 12 ft tall. Our 25 ft 6" insert liner kit (VOLKI-625) and 35 ft kit (VOLKI-635) include the liner, top plate, insert connector and cap; measure from the insert's flue outlet to the top of the chimney before you choose. Keep 16" between the insert and a combustible side wall, 34" from the top of the unit to a combustible mantel up to 12" deep, and 72" from the base of the unit to the ceiling. The 150-I is not approved for mobile homes.

The firescreen door (AC01213) is the screen listed in the 150-I parts list. Note that in the United States, EPA rules prohibit burning with the door open behind a screen.

Floor protection

In the USA, non-combustible floor protection must extend 16" in front of the door opening and 8" to each side, and the depth of your existing hearth extension counts toward it. If the hearth is raised less than 5" above the floor, the protection in front needs an R-value of at least 1.00 and must extend 23" in front of the unit. Our hearth pads can extend a short hearth.
