The Century Heating CW2100 wood insert (model CB00027) is a compact, non-catalytic fireplace insert built by SBI, the company that also builds Drolet and Englander stoves. It turns a small, drafty masonry fireplace into a real heater for 250 to 1,200 sq ft, with up to 45,000 BTU/h, 17" logs and burn times up to 7 hours. It is EPA 2020 certified at 1.5 g/h, with an average overall efficiency of 75% (HHV) and an optimum efficiency of 82%. A 90 CFM blower and a 26" x 42" faceplate come with it.

Who the CW2100 is for

The CW2100 is built for fireplaces that are too small for most inserts. It fits:

  • Masonry fireplaces with an opening of at least 25" wide, 19" high and 15 1/2" deep.
  • Living rooms and main floors of about 250 to 1,200 sq ft that you want to heat without a freestanding stove.
  • Owners who want to cut oil, propane or electric bills with supplemental wood heat.

Set expectations honestly: this is a small firebox. It is a strong supplemental heater for the room it sits in and the spaces open to it, not a whole-house furnace for a cold, drafty home. If your fireplace opening is larger, a bigger insert will hold more wood and burn longer.

Fireplace fit and installation

The CW2100 is approved for masonry fireplaces only; it is not approved for factory-built (zero-clearance) fireplaces, alcoves or mobile homes. The minimum masonry opening is 25" wide x 19" high x 15 1/2" deep; add at least 4" of width if you plan to connect a 5" fresh air intake kit (AC01298). Overall the insert measures 27 7/8" wide, 20 1/8" high and 21 7/8" deep, and the faceplate needs 1" of clearance to a combustible side or top surround. The decorative faceplate panel can be installed or left off, and the blower power cord can be moved to either side.

Chimney liner and the liner-kit bundles

The CW2100 needs a full-length 6" stainless steel chimney liner listed to UL 1777, run from the insert to the top of the chimney. The simplest way to get everything in one order is a bundle: the CW2100 + faceplate + 25 ft liner kit or the CW2100 + faceplate + 35 ft liner kit. Measure from the fireplace floor to the top of the chimney before you choose a length. Our chimney liner guide walks through sizing and installation.

Firebox, burn time and heat output

The firebox holds 1.1 cu ft overall (1.03 cu ft EPA loading volume) and takes logs up to 17" loaded east-west, side to side. Under EPA test conditions it delivers 8,471 to 31,700 BTU/h of overall heat output from low to high burn, with a manufacturer-rated maximum of 45,000 BTU/h on a dense load of dry cordwood. Burn time tops out at about 7 hours on a full load of dry hardwood with the air turned down; on a cold night with the air open, plan on reloading every few hours. The air control sits above the door and uses a removable handle, and a C-Cast baffle and ceramic glass in a cast iron door frame round out the build.

The Blue Ridge 150-I is the CW2100's closest match on paper; the Escape 1500-I is the step up if your fireplace is at least 27 1/2" wide, 21 1/2" high and 12 3/4" deep and you need more heat. Compare the ship date on each product page.

Floor protection

In the USA, non-combustible floor protection must extend 16" in front of the door opening and 8" to each side of it. Your existing hearth extension counts toward the 16", so most masonry fireplaces only need extra protection if the hearth is shallow. Check our hearth pads if you need to extend it.

Frequently asked questions

The CW2100 is for masonry fireplaces only, and its tapered top and sides are designed for small fireplace openings. The minimum masonry opening is 25" wide, or 29" if you add a fresh air intake kit; check the full opening dimensions in the manual before ordering. It is not approved for mobile homes.
It is rated for 250 to 1,200 sq ft with up to 7 hours of burn time, and the included blower (up to 90 CFM) pushes heat out of the fireplace into the room.

It depends on the house. The CW2100 is rated for 250 to 1,200 sq ft, but its 1.1 cu ft firebox holds a small load, so it works best as strong supplemental heat for the room it sits in and the spaces open to it. In a cold climate or a drafty home, plan on reloading every few hours. If your fireplace opening is at least 27 1/2" wide, 21 1/2" high and 12 3/4" deep, the larger Drolet Escape 1500-I (500 to 1,800 sq ft) is worth comparing.
Yes. It vents through a full-length 6" stainless steel liner listed to UL 1777, run from the insert to the top of the chimney. Our CW2100 bundles include the faceplate and a 25 ft or 35 ft liner kit; measure from the insert outlet to the top of your chimney to pick the length.
Measure from the floor of the fireplace to the top of the chimney. If the run is 25 ft or less, the CW2100 + faceplate + 25 ft liner kit bundle covers it; up to 35 ft, choose the 35 ft bundle. The liner must be 6" stainless steel listed to UL 1777 and run the full height of the chimney. Call 1-888-914-0022 if you are between sizes.
In the USA the manual requires non-combustible floor protection extending 16" in front of the door opening and 8" to each side. Your existing hearth extension counts toward the 16", so most masonry fireplaces only need extra protection if the hearth is shallow.

We had a very small existing fireplace opening, so it was basically this or one other competitor’s model. There were no reviews for this model, but I went with it because it was well priced and Canadian made. Maybe the reviews would have swayed me in the other direction, but we’ve still mostly been happy with it. Knowing we were getting a very small stove, we didn’t expect it to heat the whole house, and it does not. It does, however, provide a good source of supplemental heat for the main living area of the house and, in addition to basically allowing us to halve the amount of oil we burn, it looks great and adds a lot of charm to the room.

We were looking forward to having this insert installed. It looks nice and fits seamlessly into our existing brick fireplace. We live in Quebec with frequent power outages in the winter, so we thought it would be a great backup to heat our small bungalow of 1200 sq ft. I cannot give it 5 stars, because although it looks good and seems to be built well, the blower on it is weak it may be good for a room size of up to 300 square feet, but doubt it will heat the entire home during a power outage. It is a disappointment in that regard.

Great stove. Fast shipping. Item arrived undamaged and well packaged. Installation was straightforward. Yes, the stove is small. You can fit about 3 pieces of regular-sized wood in it. I have to add wood about every 2.5-3 hours. If I burn for a few hours at night and have a good bed of coals I can relight a "very warm" stove the next day early in the morning (about 8 hours later). This stove works perfectly for what I need it to do. If you are well aware of what you need and what you are trying to accomplish this stove may fit the bill. The price of the stove is outstanding. It is made and designed in Canada. A lot of cheaper stoves are made in China. I will take Canada over China any day for a heating appliance I have to trust to be safe in my home.

Unit is very nice looking and seems to be made well. That being said, the gasket on the door is joined together at the top/middle of the door. I would have thought bottom middle would be better. On my insert the gasket has been cut too short and has a 1/2" gap for air to enter. I will be calling Century to enquire about this issue. Keep in mind this is a small insert and not a lot of wood will fit in, therefore I don't expect very long burn times and huge amount of heat.

While it is advertised as small, if definitely is small. That being said, install was easy (again, small) but the heat output is a huge disappointment. The fire box is so tiny, after 12 hours of ash, you can barely squeeze in 2, 1/4 split logs (so, half a log total) that means, feeding it wood almost hourly. It is constructed nice, looks good. The blower is almost useless and again, the biggest problem is the tiny firebox. The only reason we chose this one was due to availability, we needed a new insert before the 2022/2023 winter and this was all that was available. Definitely will be changing it out in the future.

We were really excited to get this insert. We liked the design and look of the unit and thought it would be a great addition to our family room for supplementing heat because of rising fuel prices. We live in Southern New York and winter temps can get in the single degree temperatures (Fahrenheit). I give it 2 stars because it looks good and seems to be built well. I can't justify giving it more than that. The blower on it is weak and it may be good for a room size up to 300 square feet. Definitely will not heat a 1200 square foot home that it says it is rated up to. Barely heats our 600 sq ft family room on a 40° night. Incredible disappointment. I plan on pulling it out and getting a larger insert from another company. Waste of money this unit is. I'd send it back if I could but its not worth the shipping cost and I wasted enough money already.
