Drolet Fox Wood Stove (DB03186)

The Drolet Fox wood stove (model DB03186) is one of the most compact EPA-certified stoves Drolet has built, and the only one with a solid cast iron door decorated with a fox. It heats 250 to 1,200 sq ft with a maximum heat output of 45,000 BTU/h, takes logs up to 17" and burns up to 5 hours per load. It is EPA 2020 certified at 1.8 g/h with 74% average efficiency (HHV), stands on steel legs and is approved for mobile homes and alcoves. 18 1/2" W x 28 7/8" D x 28 3/4" H, 235 lb shipping weight. Who the Fox is for

• Cabins, hunting camps, workshops, garages and small homes of up to about 1,200 sq ft.

Firebox, burn time and heat output

The firebox has an overall volume of 1.8 cu ft (1.55 cu ft EPA loading volume) and measures 14 1/4" wide, 11 3/4" high and 19 1/8" deep. Logs load north-south, front to back, up to 17" long; the deep firebox holds more ash between cleanings. The door opening is 12" x 7 5/8". Under EPA test conditions the Fox delivers 12,124 to 26,700 BTU/h from low to high burn, with up to 45,000 BTU/h on a dense load of dry cordwood. Treat the 5-hour maximum burn as a best case; dry hardwood, a full load and good draft get you closest to it.

Fox vs. Spark II N vs. Escape 1200 N

The Fox shares its body and legs with the original Drolet Spark II; the only difference was the door. That stove has been replaced by the Spark II N, which adds Drolet's NexBurn combustion system and a glass door. The Fox keeps the original platform; Drolet's NexBurn N upgrade went to the Spark II, Escape 1200 and Deco Nano.

Blower option

A blower isn't required; the Fox heats by radiation and natural convection. To move more warm air into the next room, add the Drolet 100 CFM variable-speed blower (AC02050), the blower listed in the Fox parts list, with the Quick Connect Thermodisc (AC02055) so it runs only when the stove is hot.

Venting and installation

The Fox has a 6" flue outlet and uses 6" connector pipe to a UL 103 HT (2,100°F) factory-built chimney or a code-approved masonry chimney, at least 12 ft tall. In the USA it needs 12" to the rear wall, 18" to a side wall and 11" to a corner with single-wall pipe; double-wall connector pipe cuts the rear to 6" and the corner to 7" (the side stays at 18"). With double-wall pipe and the certified 53" x 58 1/2" wall heat shield (AC02762), rear, side and corner drop to 2 1/2". Allow 84" from the floor to a combustible ceiling. For a mobile home, single-wall pipe is forbidden and Drolet requires the 5" fresh air intake kit (AC01421) with insulated duct such as our insulated flex pipe (AC02090).

Floor protection

Unless the stove sits on a non-combustible floor such as concrete, it needs a continuous non-combustible ember pad; no R-value is required.
