Overview

🎁 INCLUDED FREE: Magnetic Stove Thermometer and 50 Fire Starters — everything you need for your first fire.

The Drolet Escape 1200 N wood stove (model DB03183) is the current version of the Escape 1200, the smallest pedestal stove in Drolet's Escape series. It heats 250 to 1,200 sq ft with a maximum heat output of 75,000 BTU/h, takes logs up to 17" and burns up to 5 hours per load. It is EPA 2020 certified at 1.7 g/h with 74% average overall efficiency (HHV), and approved for mobile home and alcove installation.

Who the Escape 1200 N is for

Choose the Escape 1200 N for:

  • Cabins, cottages and small homes of up to about 1,200 sq ft.
  • One main living area in a larger house, as zone heat that takes load off the furnace.
  • Mobile and manufactured homes, with the required fresh air kit and double-wall pipe.

Drolet's heating area is the space the stove can keep at a minimum comfortable temperature in a power outage; insulation, layout and climate all move it. If you need longer overnight burns or are heating more than 1,200 sq ft, step up to a larger model from our wood stove collection.

Escape 1200 vs. Escape 1200 N: what changed

The N replaced the original Drolet Escape 1200 (DB03182), so if you searched for the "Escape 1200", this is the model Drolet builds today. The look and footprint are nearly the same, but Drolet's NexBurn combustion system adds a tertiary combustion zone, lifting maximum output from 45,000 to 75,000 BTU/h with slightly lower emissions.

Emissions 1.8 g/h 1.7 g/h
Depth 28 7/8" 29 7/8"
Side wall clearance (single-wall pipe) 18" 24"

Heating area (250–1,200 sq ft), 17" logs, 5-hour maximum burn and 6" flue are unchanged. Replacing an older Escape 1200? The N is not a drop-in swap: it needs 24" to a side wall instead of 18", and 14" to the rear instead of 12" with single-wall pipe. Measure before you order.

Firebox, burn time and heat output

The firebox has an overall volume of 1.85 cu ft (1.67 cu ft EPA loading volume) and measures about 14 1/4" wide, 11 3/4" high and 18 7/8" deep. Logs load north-south, front to back with the ends facing the door, up to 17" long. The door opening is 12" x 7 5/8"; behind it a combustion grate helps the fire light quickly.

Under EPA test conditions the N delivers 18,782 to 71,262 BTU/h from low to high burn. Idle it on a mild evening, open the air control on a cold night. Treat the 5-hour maximum burn as a best case; dry hardwood, a full load and good draft get you closest to it.

Escape 1200 N vs. Spark II N vs. Blue Ridge 100 N

Two stoves we sell share the same NexBurn performance figures. The differences are the base, the styling and the brand.

Blower option

A blower isn't required; the stove heats by radiation and natural convection on its own. To move more warm air into the next room, add the Drolet 100 CFM variable-speed blower (AC02050), the blower listed in the Escape 1200 N parts list. Pair it with the Quick Connect Thermodisc (AC02055) so it runs only when the stove is hot.

Venting and installation

The Escape 1200 N has a 6" flue outlet and uses 6" connector pipe. It must connect to a UL 103 HT (2,100°F) factory-built chimney or a code-approved masonry chimney, at least 12 ft tall. See our wood stove chimney and stovepipe guide and 6" stove pipe kits. In the USA, double-wall connector pipe lets the stove sit 8" from the rear wall instead of 14", and 14" from a corner instead of 16"; the side wall stays at 24" (see the clearance table below). With double-wall pipe and the certified 53" x 58 1/2" wall heat shield (AC02762), rear, side and corner clearances drop to 3". For a mobile home, single-wall pipe is forbidden and Drolet requires the 5" fresh air intake kit (AC01336) with insulated duct such as our insulated flex pipe (AC02090).

Floor protection

Unless the stove sits on a non-combustible floor such as concrete, it needs a continuous non-combustible ember pad; no R-value is required. In the USA, the pad extends 16" in front of the door opening and 8" to each side, and under any horizontal run of connector pipe it must extend at least 2" past each side of the pipe. Shop our hearth pads; the 46 3/4" x 54" pads shown with this stove cover its footprint plus the required extensions.

Frequently asked questions

The Escape 1200 N is sized for 250 to 1,200 square feet, making it a good fit for small homes, cabins, cottages, or zone-heating one room of a larger house. The N revision raises maximum output to 75,000 BTU/h — considerably more than the 45,000 BTU/h of the original Escape 1200 it replaces.

Not sure what size you need? Use our quick sizing calculator to get a recommendation for your space: Stove Sizing Calculator
You can view the exact dimensions in the official Drolet Escape 1200 N dimension drawing here:
https://www.drolet.ca/file/DB03183_ESCAPE%201200%20N.pdf
Key dimensions are also listed in the Specifications section below. The N measures 18 1/2" wide, 30 1/8" high and 29 7/8" deep — an inch deeper than the original Escape 1200.
With single-wall connector pipe: 14" from the back wall, 24" from a side wall, and 16" from a corner. Switching to double-wall connector pipe reduces the back wall to 8" and the corner to 14"; the side wall stays at 24".

Important if you are replacing an older Escape 1200: the N needs more room than the model it replaces, which required 12" rear, 18" side and 11" corner. Check your alcove or corner before ordering. A non-combustible hearth pad is required under the stove. Always confirm against section 3 of the installation manual for your exact configuration.
Yes. A non-combustible hearth pad is required under the Escape 1200 N and its pedestal. The manual specifies a continuous non-combustible material — steel at least 0.015" thick, sealed ceramic tile, cement board or brick. No R-value is required. The pad must extend beyond the appliance as specified in section 4 of the installation manual and your local fire code. No floor protection is needed if the stove sits on a non-combustible floor such as concrete.
The Escape 1200 N vents through a 6" diameter flue and requires a chimney rated to ULC-S629 or UL 103 HT (2100°F) with a minimum height of 12 feet. A 6" flex liner in an existing masonry fireplace also works. Proper sizing and draft are critical for performance — consult the installation manual.
Yes. The Escape 1200 N is approved for both mobile home installation (with a fresh air intake kit) and alcove installation, provided all required clearances are maintained. The manual specifies the AC01336 5" fresh air intake kit for this pedestal model.
The Escape 1200 N burns up to 5 hours on a full load of dry cordwood. Logs up to 17" long are loaded front-to-back (north-south) into the 1.85 ft³ firebox, which has an EPA loading volume of 1.67 ft³. For best results use seasoned hardwood below 20% moisture — wet wood significantly reduces efficiency and increases creosote buildup.
The Escape 1200 N ships with the stove and its pedestal base with ash drawer. A blower (AC02050, up to 100 CFM) and the AC01336 fresh air intake kit are optional and sold separately. Drolet backs the stove with a limited lifetime warranty on the combustion chamber welds and cast iron door frame, with tiered coverage on other components. See the warranty section for full details.
Yes. The Escape 1200 N is certified to the EPA / CSA B415.1-10 particulate standard (CFR 40 Part 60, subpart AAA) at 1.7 g/h — cleaner than the 1.8 g/h of the model it replaces — with 74% HHV average efficiency.

On the tax credit: the 30% federal biomass stove tax credit (Section 25C, up to $2,000) was ended early by the 'One Big Beautiful Bill' signed in July 2025 and expired on December 31, 2025, so there is no federal biomass stove tax credit for purchases in 2026 onwards. Tax laws change often; confirm with a tax professional or the IRS before purchasing. Some state and local utility programs still offer rebates — check your state energy office.
