The Drolet Escape 1500 wood stove (model DB03135) is the middle size of Drolet's Escape pedestal stoves. It heats 500 to 1,800 sq ft with a maximum heat output of 65,000 BTU/h, takes logs up to 18" and is rated for burn times up to 7 hours. It is EPA 2020 certified at 2.4 g/h emissions, with an average overall efficiency of 68% (HHV) and an optimum overall efficiency of 76%. A 5/16" steel top with a stainless steel heat shield, a pedestal with ash drawer, an airwash glass door and side panels that cut wall clearances come standard.

Who the Escape 1500 is for

The Escape 1500 fits the home that has outgrown a small stove but doesn't need the full Escape 1800:

Houses of about 1,000 to 1,800 sq ft with an open main floor.
Basements and family rooms where you want steady heat without overheating the space.
Tighter living rooms, thanks to a 10" side-wall clearance with the built-in side panels.

Drolet's heating area is the space the stove can keep at a minimum comfortable temperature in a power outage; insulation, layout and climate all move it.

Firebox and loading

The firebox measures 1.86 cu ft overall (1.44 cu ft EPA loading volume), about 19 5/8" wide, 11 7/8" high and 13 1/2" deep, lined with refractory brick under a vermiculite baffle. Logs load east-west, side to side, up to 18" long; Drolet recommends 16" splits, the length used in its EPA testing. The door opening is 17 1/4" x 8", with a cast iron door frame and ceramic glass kept clear by an airwash. Overall the stove measures about 24 7/8" wide, 24 1/2" deep and 29 7/8" high.

Burn time and heat output

Drolet rates the Escape 1500 at up to 65,000 BTU/h with a dense load of dry cordwood, and at 9,800 to 52,200 BTU/h overall heat output from low to high burn under EPA test conditions. That low end is the Escape 1500's quiet strength: it can idle along on a mild evening without cooking you out of the room. The 7-hour maximum burn time is a best case; well-seasoned hardwood and a full east-west load get you closest.

The Drolet Escape 1200 N is smaller and cleaner-burning but rated for only up to 1,200 sq ft and 5-hour burns. The Drolet Escape 1800 on pedestal is the next size up for homes to 2,100 sq ft and 20" logs.

Blower option

A blower isn't required; the Escape 1500 heats by radiation and natural convection. To push warm air into adjoining rooms, add the Drolet 100 CFM variable-speed blower (AC02050), the blower listed in the Escape 1500 parts list, and the Quick Connect Thermodisc (AC02055) so it switches on and off with the stove's temperature.

Venting and installation

The Escape 1500 has a 6" flue outlet and uses 6" connector pipe into a UL 103 HT (2,100°F) factory-built chimney or a code-approved masonry chimney with a flue liner, at least 12 ft tall. In the USA it needs 13" to the rear wall with single-wall pipe or 6" with double-wall pipe, 10" to a side wall, and 12" (single-wall) or 6" (double-wall) in a corner. With the AC02762 modular wall heat shield and double-wall pipe it can go as close as 2 1/2" (6" on the door-handle side). See the clearance table below. Floor protection

Unless the stove sits on a non-combustible floor such as concrete, it needs a continuous non-combustible ember pad; no R-value is required. In the USA, the pad extends 16" in front of the door opening and 8" to each side. Shop our hearth pads.

What size space does the Escape 1500 heat?

The Escape 1500 is rated for 500–1,800 sq ft, with real-world performance depending on insulation, ceiling height, and climate zone. In a well-sealed modern home it can handle the full 1,800 sq ft; in an older or drafty structure, 1,000–1,200 sq ft is a more realistic target.

Where can I find the stove dimensions?

The Escape 1500 (DB03135) measures about 24 7/8" wide, 24 1/2" deep and 29 7/8" high, with the 6" flue collar centered 7 1/2" from the back. You can view the exact figures in the official Drolet dimension drawing here:

How close can the Escape 1500 sit to a combustible wall?

In the USA, with single-wall connector pipe the Escape 1500 needs 13" to the rear wall, 10" to a side wall and 12" in a corner. With double-wall pipe the rear clearance drops to 6" and the corner to 6" (side stays 10"). Adding the certified AC02762 wall heat shield with double-wall pipe brings it to 2 1/2" rear, side and corner (keep 6" on the door-handle side). Minimum floor-to-ceiling height is 84". The built-in side panels are why the side clearance is so tight. These figures are from section 3 of the owner's manual; follow the manual for your exact setup (alcove, lowered-ceiling and mobile home installs have their own figures) and have the install inspected per local code.

Does the Escape 1500 require a hearth pad?

Yes, unless it sits on a non-combustible floor such as concrete. It needs a continuous non-combustible ember pad (steel, grouted tile over a non-combustible sheet, cement board or a listed hearth pad); no R-value is required. In the USA the pad must extend 16" in front of the door opening and 8" to each side, and under any horizontal run of stovepipe by 2" on each side. See our hearth pads: Hearth pads. What chimney does the Escape 1500 require?

The Escape 1500 has a 6" flue outlet and uses 6" connector pipe. It must vent into a UL 103 HT (2,100°F) factory-built chimney or a code-approved masonry chimney with a flue liner, at least 12 ft tall. If you're venting into an existing masonry chimney, a 6" stainless liner is the usual way to bring it up to code. Can the Escape 1500 be installed in a mobile home or an alcove?

Yes to both. For a mobile (manufactured) home, Drolet requires double-wall connector pipe and an outside combustion air supply; the Escape 1500 uses the 5" fresh air intake kit for pedestal stoves (AC01336), and its mobile home clearances are 8" rear, 14 1/2" side and 12" corner (USA). In a combustible alcove, with double-wall pipe it needs 12 1/2" to the rear wall, 16" to each side wall, a maximum alcove depth of 36" (USA) and at least 78" from the floor to the alcove ceiling. Always check the full tables in section 3 of the manual for your layout.

How long does a full load of wood burn in the Escape 1500?

Up to 7 hours with properly seasoned hardwood (20% moisture or less) loaded to the 1.44 ft³ EPA loading volume and air controls set to a slow burn. Softwoods or wet wood will reduce burn time significantly and produce more creosote.

Should I choose the Escape 1500 or the Escape 1800?

Pick by the space and the wood you have. The Escape 1500 is rated for 500 to 1,800 sq ft, takes logs up to 18" and burns up to 7 hours, and it idles down to about 9,800 BTU/h, which suits homes of roughly 1,000 to 1,800 sq ft and milder shoulder seasons. The Escape 1800 is rated for 500 to 2,100 sq ft, takes 20" logs and burns up to 8 hours from a 2.4 ft³ firebox, so it is the better choice for larger open floor plans or colder climates. What comes in the box with the Escape 1500?

The stove ships complete with a pedestal with ash drawer, side panels (which cut wall clearances significantly), ceramic glass, top air deflector, ash lip, and air damper. Stovepipe sections, chimney system, fresh air intake kit, and hearth pad are purchased separately — contact us if you need help selecting the right accessories.

Is the Escape 1500 EPA 2020 certified and eligible for the federal tax credit?

Yes on EPA certification. The Escape 1500 is EPA 2020 certified at 2.4 g/h average particulate emissions. On the tax credit: the 30% federal Biomass Stove Tax Credit (Section 25C) was originally scheduled to run through 2032, but it was ended early by the 'One Big Beautiful Bill' signed into law in July 2025, and expired on December 31, 2025. There is no federal biomass stove tax credit for purchases in 2026 and onwards. Tax laws change often, so please confirm current credits with a tax professional or the IRS website before purchasing. Some state and local utility programs still offer rebates for efficient heating appliances — check your state energy office.

This medium sized wood stove throws a lot of heat. We bought it primarily as a backup heat source for when our power is out. Based on our initial fires, it should have no issues keeping the main living area comfortable. I really like the looks of it in the corner of our living room, and the glass door provides a beautiful view of the fire. Compared to three other stoves I have used, I would definitely recommend this one.

Impressive stove. Learning curve was easy with this stove. As with any stove, seasoned wood gives the best results, although we had good success with wood that was only seasoned a few months. One thing that was very important to us and I've never seen anyone comment about, is the heat shields that allow stove to be placed relatively close to combustible walls. I've done research and Drolet has the market on close clearances feature. Stove is easy to start. No smoke when door is opened. No peeling paint. Drafts great. Any negative reviews about slow starting, poor draft, ext.,most likely are due to installation issues or unseasoned wood.

After about a month of use my door will not open and close properly. The bottom pin is defective. It heats the house well but there is not much room on top to place a pan/pot.

The Drolet Escape 1500 is a good stove for people who like efficient wood stoves that burn a small, or perhaps medium amount of firewood. I don't think that you could heat more than 500 square feet with this heat source alone, but it has been great heating that much even in temps close to or under zero. Enough to have to open windows to maintain a comfortable temperature when it's 32F out. I prefer N/S loading it with around 10" split logs and topping that with full width split logs (16" perhaps). If I had to buy another stove to heat an entire house I would buy something from Drolet with a 16x16 firebox instead. The stove is very high quality and functions as advertized if you account for all the variables burning wood has.

Our old stove was no longer useable so the new stove just needed to be placed and the chimney attached.. When we got home with the stove, the pedestal was bent. It was about 1/2" out on the front left and back right when facing the stove. We repaired this. The stove burns very nice. Everything works great. I did notify Dwayne at Castle Building Centres in Evansburg and showed him the pictures.

Excellent rapport qualité-prix, le Escape 1500 est très efficace et il est facile à contrôler. Lorsque l'entrée d'air est réglée au plus bas, il brule très lentement sans rien laisser. La chambre de combustion est relativement petite, mais la grosseur est parfaite comme chauffage d'appoint dans un bungalow standard de 1200 pieds carrés, plus gros serait trop. La qualité de fabrication est irréprochable. Un excellent produit de Drolet.

Bought Escape 1500 30 days ago. Where do I start. The stove does not let enough fresh air in to let the fire burn well. Does not burn wood fully as it leaves a stove full of large chunks of charcoal when done. Also it does not have a front lip to keep burning log pieces from coming out when you open the door. Not happy at all.

Used for 2 winters now in Zone 5 and we go through only about 2 cords to heat 2000sqft. After packing for night the house never dropped below 65F when we woke in the morning. We just had chimney swept and it produced about a pint of carbon and our wood is all a mix of piñon and juniper. Favorite part - never get smoke or soot floating out when we open door to feed the fire. It is the cleanest stove we've ever had.

Used it for the first time and I was pleased with my purchase. The stove had high efficiency as it used it used little wood to heat most of the night.

The quality of the stove appears to be very good. It was a bit slow on the initial lighting compared to the model it replaced. However, it now is performing quite well. Heated the whole house sufficiently.

The horizontal pin which prevents the handle from completing full rotations fell out. It looked like it was glued by the paint. I believe this would be item 30101. The vertical pin which provides for the latch detent when the cam roller (barrel shaped) engages and holds proper closure was absolutely missing. The door latch keeper cannot perform its function. Very dissatified.

2 years review with 40 years of heating with wood stoves... Hinge broke in first month. Paint peeling on multiple spots. Burning very inefficient and short even with good well seasoned wood and doesn't even give much heat. We heat not very big apartment and it barely does it.. I'd say only good thing is ash tray under. We are very disappointed with this stove and will be changing it very soon as we had enough... Sorry but there's work to be done on this model.

We did alot of research looking for just the right stove. Not a ton of reviews on the Drolet Escape 1500 stoves. Ours was delivered with a damaged door gasket. Unfortunately I did not see this until after our old stove was removed and new stove installed. Going to be some very cold nights until Drolet sends me out a new gasket/glue under warranty. Other than that, it is a beautiful wood burning stove! Unbelievable heavy. We are very excited to use it and can promise we will be hugging it until we get warmed up.

So far, I've followed the process stated in the owners manual for curing the paint correctly. Smaller fires followed by progressively larger fires. I must say I'm surprised by the low output of heat. My old woodstove was a model from the early 80s and while it was certainly inefficient it really threw out a lot more heat, more quickly. In less than 30 minutes I could feel lot's of heat coming up through the grille in the hallway of my home with the old stove. Not so with this new one and my home is under 1200 square feet.

Great stove, lights easily, does a good job of dispersing the heat into the space and burns everything to ash. Have been using for four days and very satisfied with its performance. Useful Installation and Operating Manual though it could include more about the optional blower (including minimum rear clearance needed when installed against a non-combustible wall) and guidance on use of stove top fans.

It was very expensive to install. We bought double wall, insulated pipe and chimney and had it inspected after it was installed. The place where we got the pipe and chimney sells Drolet (The Fire Escape), but we wanted the 1500 because we have a small house...It looks great and we can't wait to use it.

The door is not closing tightly which resulted in the breakage of the small part on the door latch. The door only opens about 45 degrees and it seems the hinge was not set properly. I ordered the door latch part earlier today, believing that I broke it. It seems the cause of the extra force was due to improperly fitting door. Very happy with the service from eFireplaceStore.com. My order was received halfway across the country in less time than estimated. The Fed-Ex delivery employee was fantastic. The stove was set up in my uninsulated 450 sq ft work shop. Yesterday with a strong wind and the outside air temp no higher than 30 degrees F., the interior shop temp was 70 degrees F. It took a couple of hours from a very cold start to raise the temp above 50 degrees F. Not a problem as I don't want the shop tool warm. Regardless, I will insulate only the cathedral ceiling with R-10 rigid insulation and fully expect the small stove to provide adequate heat in the coldest conditions. The stove is well built, no shipping damage of any sort, and ready to attach to the 6" single wall stove pipe. Remember, you'll need the double lined stove pipe adapter if upgrading to double walled stove pipe.

We installed the escape 1500. It is a very nice looking heater. The problem we are having is that it will not shut down. Even when the draft is closed. Adjusted the door and it only made it worse. Readjust back to first set and did not make an difference. No matter what you do you can not open the door with getting smoke in the room.

There's a trick to lighting this stove. So far I've filled the house full of smoke when the chimneys cold, once the fire is going it seems to work well. I'm told by the dealer if I had an insulated chimney, instead of my brick I wouldn't have a big of a problem.

I originally looked for a box stove (maybe even antique) that could use full length pieces of firewood. After learning about the Drolet Escape 1500 product at the store where I bought it and sending a picture to my wife, the decision was made quickly that this is the right product and also allows viewing the fire in my new office at home.
