Overview

🎁 INCLUDED FREE: ComfortBilt Vent Cleaning Kit — for the seasonal cleaning every pellet stove needs.

The ComfortBilt Alpine HP42 pellet stove is the big-hopper model in the Alpine line. Its 120 lb hopper (100 to 110 lb usable) holds about three 40 lb bags and runs up to 80 hours on low. It heats up to 2,500 sq ft and delivers 14,857 to 42,370 BTU/h in EPA testing. It is EPA certified at 1.07 g/h with 86.1% weighted average efficiency (HHV); ComfortBilt quotes up to 87.5% on the lowest setting. Automatic ignition, a room blower, a programmable thermostat and a remote are included. It vents through 3" pellet pipe with a 2" fresh-air intake, is approved for mobile homes and comes in black.

✔ Required for Your Alpine HP42 Installation

Per the Alpine HP42 owner's manual — every pellet stove install needs these:

  • ☑ 3" Type-L Pellet Vent Kit — complete piping for a standard through-wall installation (includes the required appliance adapter).
  • ☑ Hearth Pad — non-combustible (Type 1 ember protection) floor protection reaching at least 6" past the glass and 6" past both sides of the stove.
  • ☑ Outside Air Kit — required for mobile homes; recommended for basements and tightly sealed homes. The stove has a 2" intake; the kit is sold separately.

Optional: extra pipe lengths & elbows for longer runs · clean-out tee for vertical installs.

Who the Alpine HP42 is for

Pick the HP42 when refilling is the chore you want to avoid:

  • Homes, open floor plans and basements up to about 2,500 sq ft.
  • Owners who would rather fill the hopper a couple of times a week than once or twice a day.
  • Busy households and long workweeks, where a stove that needs topping up every evening doesn't fit the routine.

Heating capacity depends on climate, insulation and layout. Like every pellet stove it needs electricity, so it stops during a power outage.

Hopper and burn time

The 120 lb hopper takes about three bags at once, and ComfortBilt rates a full load at up to 80 hours on low burn. Run it on higher settings in a cold snap and you'll use pellets faster, but you still get days, not hours, between fills. Clean the burn pot regularly and empty the pull-out ash pan as it fills.

Heat output and efficiency

EPA testing puts the HP42 at 14,857 to 42,370 BTU/h, with 1.07 g/h particulate emissions and 86.1% weighted average efficiency (HHV), the highest EPA-tested figure among the ComfortBilt stoves we carry. In Temp mode the stove adjusts its heat level to hold your set temperature. Turn on ECO and it shuts off at the set temperature and relights when the room cools. ComfortBilt notes that ECO adds igniter wear and uses more electricity, so it's best for mild days.

Controls

Choose from four modes: Manual (five heat levels), Temp, Weekly (up to four on/off periods for each day) and Thstat for a wired wall thermostat. The included remote works from up to 10 ft away. With the control panel mounted the stove stands 43" tall and 30.5" deep, so check the space under a low window or shelf.

Alpine HP42 vs. HP41 vs. HP40

The three Alpine models share the same controls and venting; they differ in size, hopper and output.

Side wall clearance 8" 24" 10"

The HP41 costs less and suits smaller spaces, but you'll fill it daily and it needs 24" to a side wall. Need more coverage than any Alpine? The ComfortBilt HP22N is rated for up to 2,800 sq ft with an 80 lb hopper.

Venting and installation

Use 3" or 4" Type L or PL pellet vent, starting with a 3" appliance adapter on the exhaust. The ComfortBilt 3" pellet vent kit covers a standard through-wall install. The 3" system allows up to 15 equivalent vent length (EVL) and 4" up to 25. Each 90° elbow or tee counts 5, and two elbows joined back to back add 2 more. Use 4" pipe above 5,000 ft or with more than one tee or 180° of elbows. Keep horizontal runs to 4 ft with a ¼" rise per foot. See our pellet stove venting guide.

Outside air through the 2" intake is required in mobile homes and recommended for basements and tight houses; the DuraVent 3" wall thimble air intake kit provides it. In a mobile home the stove must also be permanently attached to the floor and grounded to the chassis, and it can't go in a sleeping room.

Clearances and floor protection

The HP42 needs 2" from the back wall, 6" at the rear corners in a corner install and 10" from a side wall. Unless it sits on a non-combustible floor or masonry hearth, it needs a non-combustible floor protector extending 6" in front of the glass and 6" on each side, plus 2" beneath the flue pipe on horizontal installs. At 24.75" wide, the HP42 needs a pad at least 36.75" wide, so a 36" pad is too narrow. The ComfortBilt 40" hearth pad fits, or browse all hearth pads.

Frequently asked questions

The owner's manual rates the Alpine HP42 for up to 2,500 square feet, with an EPA-tested output of 14,857 to 42,370 BTU/h. Actual coverage depends on climate, insulation and layout.
ComfortBilt rates the 120 lb hopper (100 to 110 lb usable, about three 40 lb bags) at up to 80 hours on low burn. Higher heat settings use pellets faster.
Both figures come from ComfortBilt. The manual lists 86.1% as the weighted average HHV efficiency from the EPA test, which is the number to compare against other stoves. ComfortBilt quotes up to 87.5% on the lowest heat setting. Emissions are 1.07 g/h.
Use 3" or 4" Type L or PL pellet vent with a 3" appliance adapter on the exhaust. A 3" system allows up to 15 equivalent vent length (EVL) and 4" up to 25; each 90-degree elbow or tee counts 5. Use 4" above 5,000 ft or with more than one tee or 180 degrees of elbows. Our ComfortBilt 3" pellet vent kit covers a standard through-wall install.
The floor protector must extend 6" in front of the glass and 6" past each side, plus 2" beneath the flue pipe on horizontal installs. At 24.75" wide the HP42 needs a pad at least 36.75" wide, so a 36" pad is too narrow; the ComfortBilt 40" hearth pad fits.
Keep 2" from the back wall, 6" at the rear corners in a corner install and 10" from a side wall. With the control panel mounted, the stove is 43" tall and 30.5" deep, so measure under windows and shelves too.
Yes. It must be vented outside, connected to outside air through the 2" intake, permanently attached to the floor and grounded to the home's steel chassis, following HUD standard CFR 3280. It can't be installed in a sleeping room.
