Overview
The ComfortBilt Alpine HP40 pellet stove is the most compact ComfortBilt pellet stove we carry: 17" wide, 18" deep and 27" tall. It heats up to 1,500 sq ft and delivers 13,458 to 26,224 BTU/h in EPA testing from a 25 lb hopper. It is EPA certified at 0.742 g/h with 81% efficiency (HHV). A room blower, automatic ignition, a programmable thermostat and a remote are built in or included. It vents through 3" pellet pipe with a 2" fresh-air intake and is approved for mobile homes. Finishes are Black, White and Burgundy.
✔ Required for Your Alpine HP40 Installation
Per the Alpine HP40 owner's manual — every pellet stove install needs these:
- ☑ 3" Type-L Pellet Vent Kit — complete piping for a standard through-wall installation (includes the required appliance adapter).
- ☑ Hearth Pad — non-combustible (Type 1 ember protection) floor protection reaching at least 6" past the glass and 6" past both sides of the stove.
- ☑ Outside Air Kit — required for mobile homes; recommended for basements and tightly sealed homes. The stove has a 2" intake; the kit is sold separately.
Optional: extra pipe lengths & elbows for longer runs · clean-out tee for vertical installs.
Who the Alpine HP40 is for
The HP40 is built for spaces where a full-size stove won't fit or would overheat the room:
- Cabins, sunrooms, finished basements, workshops, additions and smaller homes up to about 1,500 sq ft.
- Tight floor plans. It needs only 4" behind it with horizontal venting and 8" to a side wall.
- Zone heating one living area so the furnace runs less.
Heating capacity depends on climate, insulation and layout. Like every pellet stove it runs on electricity, so it stops during a power outage.
Hopper and burn time
The 25 lb hopper takes a little over half of a standard 40 lb bag. ComfortBilt doesn't publish a burn time for the HP40, and a small hopper means more frequent refills than a big stove, especially on higher settings. If you want to fill less often, the Alpine HP41 holds 52 lb and the Alpine HP42 holds 120 lb.
Heat output and efficiency
EPA testing puts the HP40 at 13,458 to 26,224 BTU/h, with 81% efficiency (HHV) and 0.742 g/h particulate emissions. That output suits a small space: enough to warm a cabin on a cold night without driving you out of the room. In Temp mode you can switch on ECO, which shuts the stove off once the room reaches your set temperature and relights it when the room cools. ComfortBilt notes that ECO adds wear on the igniter, so use it on mild days rather than all winter.
Controls
The control panel offers four modes: Manual (five heat levels), Temp (set a room temperature from 61°F to 82°F), Weekly (up to four on/off periods for each day) and Thstat for a wired wall thermostat. The included remote handles everyday changes, and the ash pan pulls out for cleaning.
Alpine HP40 vs. HP41 vs. HP42
The three Alpine models share the same controls and venting; they differ in size, hopper and output.

Choose the HP40 for a small space or a tight corner. Step up to the HP41 to heat a mid-size home (note its 24" side wall clearance), or to the HP42 if you'd rather fill the hopper a couple of times a week.
Venting and installation
Use 3" or 4" Type L or PL pellet vent, starting with a 3" appliance adapter on the exhaust. The ComfortBilt 3" pellet vent kit covers a standard through-wall install. The 3" system allows up to 17 equivalent vent length (EVL) and 4" up to 27; each 90° elbow or tee counts 5. Switch to 4" if the flue is taller than 12 ft or you live above 5,000 ft. Keep horizontal runs to 4 ft, and ComfortBilt recommends at least 3 ft of vertical pipe on through-wall installs. See our pellet stove venting guide.
Outside air through the 2" intake is required in mobile homes and recommended for basements and tight houses; the DuraVent 3" wall thimble air intake kit provides it. In a mobile home the stove must also be permanently attached to the floor and grounded to the chassis. Clearances are in the table below.
Floor protection
Unless the stove sits on a non-combustible floor or masonry hearth, it needs a non-combustible floor protector extending 6" in front of the glass and 6" on each side, plus 2" beneath the flue pipe on horizontal installs. At 17" wide, that means a pad at least 29" wide. Shop our hearth pads.
