Englander 25-CBPAH Pellet Stove (ESW0020)

The Englander 25-CBPAH pellet stove (model ESW0020) is built around one thing: a 120 lb hopper that runs up to 76 hours between fills. It heats up to 2,200 sq ft with 11,098 to 25,122 BTU/h of heat output, burns 2 to 4.4 lb of pellets an hour, and is EPA 2020 certified at 1.47 g/h with 67.6% efficiency (HHV). Automatic ignition, a room blower, a 3" pellet vent outlet and an outside air kit in the box. Approved for mobile homes with outside air. Who the 25-CBPAH is for

Choose the 25-CBPAH when you care more about how often you fill the stove than how hard it can push. It suits:

• Well-insulated homes, or homes where the pellet stove supplements a furnace or heat pump.
• Main living areas and open floor plans where steady, moderate heat is the goal.
• Owners who are away for long stretches and want to fill the hopper about twice a week in mild weather.

Englander's 2,200 sq ft figure is a maximum that depends on climate, insulation and layout, and the manual asks you to check it against a heat-loss calculation. Its top output of about 25,000 BTU/h is modest, so in a cold climate or a drafty house a stove with more output will serve you better (see the comparison below).

Hopper size and burn time per hopper

The hopper holds 120 lb, three 40 lb bags. Englander rates a full hopper at up to 76 hours on the lowest setting; at the highest feed rate, 4.4 lb/h, it lasts a little over a day. Real numbers depend on the pellets: Englander recommends premium-grade, 1/4" pellets from PFI-certified mills, and either softwood or hardwood pellets burn well. Low-grade, high-ash pellets fill the burn pot faster and shorten the time between cleanings. The burn pot should be emptied daily and before every start-up, and the baffle and clean-out covers checked weekly.

Heat range and efficiency

Heat output runs from 11,098 BTU/h on low to 25,122 BTU/h on high (3.25 to 7.36 kW). Tested efficiency is 67.6% (HHV) and particulate emissions are 1.47 g/h, within the EPA 2020 limit. The low end is the 25-CBPAH's strength: it idles gently on mild days without overheating the room.

Controls, ignition and power

A digital control board sets the heat range and the room blower speed; the blower always runs at or above the heat range. Press "On" and the automatic igniter lights the pellets, with normal operation in about 15 minutes. There is no thermostat or scheduling mode in the manual. The stove plugs into a standard household outlet, and Englander recommends a surge protector. If the power drops for about three minutes or less, the stove restarts on its own; after a longer outage it stays off until you press "On". Like every pellet stove, it does not run without power.

Venting

The 25-CBPAH uses 3" or 4" Type L or PL pellet vent, never B-vent or galvanized pipe. Runs up to 15 ft can be 3" pipe; longer runs, and installs above 4,000 ft altitude, need 4". The manual requires at least 36" of vertical rise so smoke can clear the stove in a power outage, and the vent may also be run through a ceiling or into an existing chimney with a suitable liner. Outside air kit and mobile homes

Outside combustion air is mandatory on this stove, and the kit to connect it is included. If the connection is longer than 6 ft, uses more than two elbows or the stove is in a basement, the manual calls for 3" outside-air pipe instead of 2". In a mobile home, the stove must use the outside air kit, be bolted to the floor and grounded, and may not go in a bedroom.

Clearances and floor protection

Minimum clearances to combustibles are 0" to the rear wall, 8" to a side wall and 6" in a corner, though the vent pipe's own clearances may push the stove farther from the wall. On a combustible floor, the stove needs a non-combustible floor protector with an R-value of at least 0.2, extending 6" past the front and sides.
