Frequently asked questions

Choosing the right size stove matters for both comfort and efficiency. As a general guide, wood stoves are categorized as small (up to 1,500 sq ft), medium (up to 2,500 sq ft), and large (2,500+ sq ft, or open-floor-plan homes). You'll also want to factor in how well your home is insulated, your ceiling height, your climate, and your floor plan. The Columbia II is a compact-to-mid-size stove well suited to small and medium spaces.

Not sure what size you need? Use our quick sizing calculator to get a recommendation for your space: Stove Sizing Calculator
The inside of the stove measures 19 5/8"W x 11 7/8"H x 13 1/2"D. The stove also has an extra layer on the sides and back to help reduce clearances. For the full exterior dimensioned drawing, see the official Drolet Columbia II dimension sheet here:
https://www.drolet.ca/file/DB03016-COLUMBIA%20II.pdf
The Columbia II has an extra shielded layer on its sides and back that helps reduce clearances to combustible walls. The exact back, side, and corner figures depend on whether you use single-wall or double-wall connector pipe — double-wall lets it sit noticeably closer. All required clearances are listed in the Specifications section on this page and in the owner's manual. Always confirm the published clearances for your configuration and have the install inspected per local code.
Yes, the Columbia II can be installed in a mobile home.
The Columbia II is approved for alcove installation. The specific minimum alcove clearances (height, depth, and side walls) are listed in the Specifications section on this page and in the owner's manual, since they depend on your exact setup. Always confirm the published figures for your configuration and have the installation inspected per local code before use.
Black stove pipe is normally used to connect the stove to either the wall or ceiling before continuing on to a chimney connection, which can be either a masonry chimney or an approved class-A chimney pipe that is able to handle extreme temperatures. Proper use of the correct chimney components will assure proper venting.
It needs a 6" chimney connector / piping kit. You can see the compatible venting and piping options in our accessories here: Accessories
If you do, it must be installed a minimum of 18 inches off the top of the stove. If it is installed any closer, the extreme heat from the stove can melt the part. Also, you should have a minimum of 12 feet, per section 6.7.1 of manual 1 of 2.
No, this model cannot be rear-vented — it's top-vent only. If you specifically need a rear-vented stove, contact us and we can point you to a suitable model, or browse our full range here: Wood Stoves
Yes. The recommended blower for the Columbia II is the Drolet Variable-Speed Blower (100 CFM, AC02050), purchased separately: Drolet blower with variable speed control 100 cfm ac02050. Add the Quick Connect Thermodisc (AC02055) if you'd like it to switch on automatically once the stove heats up. Both are shown under "What else you'll need" next to the Add to Cart button.
You can also get an add-on called a blower. A blower will help circulate air and make your stove feel more effective by blowing hot air around the room. Now, your stove is going to run fine without one if you don't really require any air movement.
No. This stove uses natural draft and does not require a fan to operate. The fan option is only for circulating heat into the room.
This stove already has an ash drawer. If you want the pedestal version, it's the Blackcomb II — the main difference is the dimensions (the Blackcomb is about 1 5/8" taller, roughly 1" less wide, and slightly less deep); everything else is the same. You can see the Blackcomb II here: Drolet blackcomb ii wood stove
The Columbia II stovetop isn't specifically designed as a cook surface, so the manufacturer doesn't recommend it for cooking. You may be able to warm a pot or boil water on it in a pinch, but it won't give the even, controlled heat of a proper cook surface. If cooking is important to you, take a look at our Drolet Bistro wood cookstove, which is purpose-built for it: Drolet bistro wood cookstove
Yes, it is possible for the top surface to get hot enough for water to reach a boil. You could potentially boil food on it.
Yes, this unit has an ash pan.
Ashes are removed through the ash drawer located at the front near the bottom of the stove.
Those are the log retainers.
Yes, the legs can be removed if needed to move the stove. However, the stove cannot be used without its legs.
The total height of the stove from the feet to the top of the flue collar is 28 1/2" high.
This unit weighs 316 lbs. You can remove the firebrick and the stove door to lighten the stove when moving it into position.
No, this model is only available with the door opening from the left. See the Dimensions doc for a visual.
This stove is stocked in the USA and ships from the manufacturer's authorized U.S. distribution facility — no cross-border delays or customs.
The 30% federal biomass stove tax credit (Section 25C), which offered up to $2,000 for qualifying EPA-certified stoves rated at least 75% efficient, was ended early by the 'One Big Beautiful Bill' signed into law in July 2025, and expired on December 31, 2025. There is no federal biomass stove tax credit for purchases in 2026 and onwards. Tax laws change often, so please confirm current credits with a tax professional or the IRS website before purchasing. Some state and local utility programs still offer rebates for efficient heating appliances — check your state energy office as a starting point.

Looks great. At half the price of Pacific Energy but also a cooktop, better BTUs, an equivalent low emission and a larger fuel box — I hope I'll be very satisfied. I am curing it now with a small fire and it's a great view.

I ordered on March 22, 2026, and it arrived on March 30, 2026, via Estes Freight. It was packed well with wood all the way around it. Not a scratch on it. We have been burning wood since 1993, and we bought this one to replace a LOPI from 1993. After going over many wood burning manufacturers, we decided to go with Drolet. We are in our 70s, so we believe this wood stove will serve us well for many more winters.

So disappointed — it's shallower than the other one, the ash falls out when you open the door, and the ash collection pan is a joke, down from 4 inches to 2, ugh (translated from French)

Very nice mid-sized stove. Seems to be well constructed. Stove arrived in perfect condition, very well packed in a crate. Shipping took longer than we had hoped but well worth the wait. Fittings are perfect, DuraVent pipe hooked right up to the stove. The stove draws very well and has a nice even burn. Love the glass door.

Just a little smaller than what I'm used to, but other than that, just trying to get used to it. However, having problems with the hinge pins at the moment. Hopefully I can follow the instructions from their staff to correct the problem.

Very disappointed. The ash tray is not flush with the stove, instead it rests about 2 inches below the opening in the stove, which makes no sense since using it causes ash to float all around the house. Also, the ash drop is a round metal plug about 2.5 inches in diameter, how in the world did you expect us to get the ash to fall into that tiny round hole and down into the ash tray? Essentially the ash tray in this stove is useless.

You did not make it clear on the product description that the ash release was a metal cork that I would have to put my hand into the ash in order to open it.

Overall I'm impressed with the product. However, it appears that quality control may have missed a nut rendering the left legs unstable. Additionally, two of the bricks were damaged. Fortunately, when we called the company, they advised us to take photos and they would send us the replacements.
