Englander Blue Ridge 500 Wood Stove (ESW0012)

The Englander Blue Ridge 500 wood stove (model ESW0012) is the largest stove in the Blue Ridge line, built by England's Stove Works in the USA for whole-home heating. It is rated for 1,000 to 2,700 sq ft, with a maximum heat output of 110,000 BTU/h, a 3.5 cu ft firebox that takes logs up to 22" and burn times up to 10 hours. EPA 2020 certified at 1.6 g/h, with 71% average overall efficiency (HHV) and 77% optimum efficiency. Non-catalytic, with a vermiculite baffle, a cast iron door frame, large ceramic glass with a mountain overlay, and a pedestal base with an ash drawer. 6" flue outlet, optional 100 CFM blower, approved for mobile home and alcove installation.

Who the Blue Ridge 500 is for

Pick the Blue Ridge 500 when one stove has to be the main heat source:

• Homes of about 1,500 to 2,700 sq ft, especially open plans where heat can travel between rooms.
• Basement installs that push heat up a stairwell, and cold-climate homes with a long heating season.
• Owners who want fewer reloads: the big east-west firebox holds enough wood for overnight burns.

Englander's heating area is the space the stove can hold at a minimum comfortable temperature in a power outage; insulation, layout and climate all change the real figure. In a tight, well-insulated house under about 1,500 sq ft, the 500 can be more stove than you need. The Blue Ridge 300P or another model from our wood stove collection will run cleaner at the lower output you actually use.

Firebox and loading

The firebox has an overall volume of 3.5 cu ft (2.88 cu ft EPA loading volume) and measures about 22 7/8" wide, 13" high and 20 1/8" deep. Logs load east-west, side to side, up to 22" long, and Englander recommends 16" splits. The door opening is 19" x 9 7/8", behind a cast iron door frame and 17 1/2" x 12 5/8" ceramic glass, so you get a wide view of the fire. One air control under the ash shelf sets the burn: slide it left for high, right for low.

Burn time and heat output

With a dense load of dry cordwood the Blue Ridge 500 peaks at 110,000 BTU/h. Under EPA test conditions its overall heat output runs from 17,200 BTU/h on low to 57,800 BTU/h on high. That spread is what makes a large stove livable: turn it down on a mild day, open it up when the temperature drops.

The 10-hour maximum burn time is a best case. Wood species, moisture content, how full you load it, chimney draft and air setting all matter, and dry hardwood loaded tight east-west gets you closest.

Blue Ridge 500 vs. Escape 2100 vs. HT-3000 vs. Blue Ridge 300P

The Blue Ridge 500 shares its rated performance with two Drolet stoves from the same factory, SBI. The Drolet Escape 2100 and the Drolet HT-3000 list the same heating area, firebox, log length, output and emissions. The differences are styling, door design and clearances to combustibles, so check each model's own clearance table. If 2,100 sq ft is enough, the Blue Ridge 300P is the next size down.

Blower option

A blower isn't required; the Blue Ridge 500 heats by radiation and natural convection. To move more warm air into adjoining rooms, add the 100 CFM variable-speed blower (AC02050), the blower in the Blue Ridge 500 parts list, with the Quick Connect Thermodisc (AC02055) so it runs only when the stove is hot. The stove does not come with a blower.

Venting and installation

The Blue Ridge 500 has a 6" flue outlet and uses 6" connector pipe into a UL 103 HT (2,100°F) factory-built chimney or a code-approved masonry chimney with a liner, at least 12 ft tall. In the USA, single-wall connector pipe needs 13 3/4" to the rear wall and 22" to the side wall; double-wall pipe cuts that to 8" rear and 19" side, with 12" in a corner either way. The AC02762 modular wall heat shield with double-wall pipe brings all three down to 2 1/2". For a mobile home, single-wall pipe is not allowed, the pedestal must be fastened to the floor, and the manual requires the 5" fresh air intake kit (AC01336) with insulated intake pipe such as the 4' insulated flex pipe (AC02090).

Floor protection

On a combustible floor the Blue Ridge 500 needs a continuous non-combustible ember pad; no R-value is required, and a concrete floor needs none. In the USA the pad must extend 16" in front of the door opening and 8" beyond the sides, and the manual's floor-protection diagram puts the protected area at 32 5/8" wide by 41" deep for a flat-wall install.
