Installing a Wood Stove: What the Job Actually Involves

Most people underestimate a wood stove install in the same way: they budget for the stove and are surprised by everything around it. The stove is often the cheaper half of the project. Here's the whole job in order, so nothing catches you late.
1. Pick the location first, not the stove
Where the stove goes determines what you can install, so decide this before you buy.
The strongest position in a house is interior and central, with a straight run up through the roof. That gives you the best draft and puts the heat where it circulates. An exterior wall is easier to retrofit but means a colder chimney that fights you at every startup.
Two constraints to check with a tape measure before anything else: how much clear floor space you have for the stove plus its required hearth pad extension, and whether the path from the stove to the roof is straight or full of joists and rafters.
If you are heating something other than a living room, the constraints change enough to be worth reading first: a garage or shop, a basement, a cabin, a mobile home, a tiny house, or a shed, barn or pole building.
2. Know your clearances — and how to shrink them

There are two separate clearance requirements in every install, and people routinely plan for one and forget the other: clearance from the stove body to combustible walls, and clearance from the connector pipe to combustible walls and ceilings. Both come from your stove's manual and the pipe manufacturer's listing — not from a general guide like this one.
Stove body clearances
These vary by model, by whether the stove has factory side and rear heat shields, and by whether you add a certified wall shield. That last one is the lever most people don't know about, and it is the reason we stock heat shields at all: a certified modular wall heat shield ($439, fits most Drolet and Englander stoves) can substantially reduce the required clearance — but only use the reduced figure stated in your stove's manual for that specific shield. Improvised sheet metal doesn't count and isn't safe. Stoves like the Escape 1800 ($1,549) already ship with factory side shields, which is why they tuck closer to walls than most stoves their size.
Pipe clearances: single-wall vs double-wall
This is the decision that quietly determines whether your stove fits where you want it. Single-wall connector pipe is cheaper and radiates useful heat into the room, but it needs large clearances to combustibles — commonly around 18 inches under the standard rules. Double-wall connector pipe has an air gap between an inner and outer wall, which keeps the outer surface cooler and allows a listed clearance a fraction of that, often in the single digits. It also keeps flue gases hotter, which helps draft.
The practical consequence: if your stove is going into a corner, near a stud wall, or anywhere the pipe passes close to a ceiling or combustible surface, double-wall pipe may be what makes the install legal at all — and it can be cheaper than building out a shielded wall to accommodate single-wall. Use the clearance stated on the specific pipe's listing; the numbers above are typical, not universal, and they change if you combine pipe with a wall shield.
Note that in a mobile home installation, single-wall pipe is not merely inadvisable — it is prohibited outright.

3. Floor protection
Wood stoves need non-combustible floor protection extending a specified distance in front of the door and to the sides, and many stoves also require a minimum insulating value rather than just a non-combustible surface. Getting this wrong is one of the most common inspection failures.
One exception worth knowing: where the stove sits directly on a non-combustible floor such as a concrete slab, Drolet's manuals state that no floor protection is required at all — which is why garage, shop and basement installs often skip this line item.

4. The chimney: the expensive part
This is where budgets break. You have two paths:
New Class A chimney — insulated listed pipe running from a ceiling support box up through the roof, with connector pipe joining the stove to it inside the room. Straight up is best; every elbow costs draft. Where a straight vertical path isn't available, the run can exit through a wall and climb outside instead — we weigh going through the wall against going through the roof in a separate guide. Relining an existing masonry chimney — a stainless flex liner sized to your stove's flue collar, run the full height. Old masonry flues are usually oversized for a modern 6" appliance and often have cracked tiles. Nearly every current wood stove uses a 6" flue, and the chimney should match that collar the whole way. Necking down chokes draft; oversizing cools the flue and grows creosote. If your flue collar is 4" rather than 6", we stock 4" liner kits ($399) too.
Drolet specifies a minimum 12 foot chimney from stove to cap. In a two-storey house that happens by itself; in a single-storey cabin, shed or pole building it frequently does not, and short chimneys are the most common cause of a stove that will not draft.
5. Combustion air

Modern houses are sealed tightly enough to starve a stove, which shows up as smoke rollout on reload and a fire that won't get going. An outside air connection is required for mobile home installations and a good idea in any tight house or basement — the 5" fresh air intake kit ($82) fits most pedestal stoves. 6. Permits and inspection
Most jurisdictions require a permit for a solid fuel appliance, and the inspection is not the enemy — an uninspected install is exactly the thing your insurer will ask about after a claim. Requirements are local, so call your building department early, before pipe is ordered. In most of the US, NFPA 211 is the underlying standard, and your stove's manual and the pipe manufacturer's listing govern the specifics.
7. DIY or hire out?
Honest version: a straightforward install — interior location, straight run up through a roof with accessible attic space, no masonry involved — is within reach of a competent DIYer who reads both manuals cover to cover and doesn't improvise. The parts are engineered to go together.
Bring in a professional when any of these are true: the chimney is masonry and needs relining or inspection, the run needs offsets around framing, you're working on a steep or high roof, the stove is going into an alcove or other tight enclosure, or your local code requires certified installation. An NFI-certified installer is also the fastest path through inspection.
Whichever way you go, the appliance itself is heavy freight — 250 to 450 lbs, delivered curbside. Plan two to four people and an appliance dolly for moving it into place.
8. Before the first fire

Cure the paint with a couple of small, short fires before you build a real one — the stove will smoke and smell, which is normal and only happens once. Ventilate the room while it happens. Then break in gradually rather than loading the firebox full on day one.
Burn only dry, seasoned wood at 20% moisture or less. A moisture meter costs very little and prevents most of the problems people blame on their stove. Install a CO alarm on the same floor, and schedule your first chimney sweep for the end of the first season.
What if I want to heat the whole house?
A well-sized large stove will carry an open-plan house, but it heats by radiating from one spot — which is why upstairs bedrooms and rooms behind doors stay cold. If your goal is even heat everywhere and you already have ductwork, the other option is a wood furnace.
A furnace is a different appliance with a different install. It sits in a basement or utility space, connects to duct runs, and works off a wall thermostat like the gas furnace it's replacing or supplementing. What changes versus a stove install: you need ductwork (6 to 10 runs of 6" duct), a dedicated 15A circuit, a 24V thermostat, and at least 69" of ceiling height for the plenum. It is not approved for mobile homes or alcoves, and the duct design genuinely wants a ventilation specialist — poor ducting is the main reason furnaces underperform. It's a bigger project than a stove, and worth a phone call before you commit.
What it all costs
The stove is typically the second-biggest line in a wood stove project once venting, floor protection, clearance hardware, and labor are counted. A realistic budget covers: the stove, chimney or liner components, connector pipe (single- or double-wall), hearth pad, wall shield if you need one, outside air kit, permit, and installation labor if you're not doing it yourself.
