Overview

🎁 INCLUDED FREE: Drolet Ash Vacuum Cleaner ($161 value) — the essential tool for fast, dust-free ash removal from your furnace.

The Drolet Heat Commander II is a whole-home indoor wood furnace — the first forced-air wood burning furnace on the market with Dual Fire© two-stage electronic combustion control. It connects to your ductwork and syncs with your thermostat: automated air supply and flame adjustment boost or bank the fire on demand, delivering uninterrupted heat with minimal tending, low creosote formation, and among the lowest burn rates (firewood consumption) in its class. EPA 2020 certified, it heats 1,000 – 2,500 sq ft, and is approved in the USA to run in parallel with an existing oil, gas, or propane furnace.

  • Heating Area: 1,000 – 2,500 sq ft via ducted forced air
  • Heat delivery: 55,000 BTU/h at 875 CFM with a 55°F temperature rise, measured at the plenum (owner's manual, section 7.5)
  • Firebox: 3.6 ft³, refractory-brick lined — up to 10 hours burn time, logs up to 21" (loads over width and depth)
  • Emissions: 0.09 lb/mmBTU — EPA 2020 certified, among the cleanest wood furnaces available
  • Blower: 1/3 hp direct drive, included
  • Flue: 6" — UL 103 HT (2100°F) listed chimney required
  • Dimensions: 27 3/4" W × 51 1/8" D × 63 1/2" H min. (with plenum)
  • Made in Canada — Limited Lifetime Warranty

What's Included: blower, 24V wall thermostat, hot air plenum kit, RTD plenum probe, fresh air supply adapter, wood moisture meter, combustion-state indicator light, automated combustion control, ash lip, ash drawer, tool holder, poker, and heat exchanger scraper.

Is a wood furnace the right appliance for you?

A wood burning furnace earns its cost when you need ducted distribution — a chopped-up floor plan, bedrooms down a hall, or an upstairs that will not heat from one room. If your home is open enough for one heat source, a large wood stove does the same heating job for roughly a third of the price. If your house runs on radiators or radiant floor rather than ducts, you need a hydronic boiler and this is not the appliance.

Our indoor wood boiler vs wood furnace vs wood stove guide works through that choice properly. If you are cross-shopping other forced-air wood furnaces, see our Fire Chief FC1000E comparison and DAKA 521FB and 622FBT comparison. Considering an outdoor unit instead? Start with the outdoor wood furnace cost guide and the Central Boiler comparison.

✔ Before You Order — Installation Requirements

A furnace is a ducted HVAC appliance, not a stove. Per the owner's manual:

  • ☑ Ductwork required — the hot air plenum takes 6 to 10 round 6" ducts, with a minimum of 6 outlets. Ceiling height of at least 69" is required for the plenum. Maximum main duct run is 35 ft; maximum secondary duct run is 10 ft.
  • ☑ A 24V wall thermostat (included) mounted on an interior wall, at least 15 ft from the furnace.
  • ☑ A dedicated 15A / 120V circuit.
  • ☑ A UL 103 HT listed 6" chimney — or a lined masonry chimney meeting code. No manual damper may be installed.
  • ☑ Floor protection if the floor is combustible; none required on concrete.
  • ☑ Static pressure of 0.2" W.C. must be achieved at the plenum for the system to distribute heat properly.
  • ❌ Not approved for mobile homes or alcove installation.

Drolet strongly recommends installation by an NFI-certified professional and consultation with a ventilation specialist for the duct design. Parallel add-on to an existing gas, oil, or electric furnace is permitted in the USA only — installation in series is not approved. Email info@stovesource.com or text 1-888-866-8206 before ordering and we'll walk through your setup.

Accessories for this furnace

The Hot Air Plenum Kit (AC01225) is the ducting takeoff most installs need. Venting parts are in our wood stove pipe and venting collection — this furnace requires a 6" UL 103 HT listed system, covered in the chimney and stovepipe guide.

Frequently asked questions

Section 3.3.4 (Floor protection) of the Heat Commander II manual (46419A) requires a protected area of 30 1/4" wide (G) by 64" deep (F) in the United States. The depth is measured from the door opening, and the manual also calls for protection under the horizontal section of the connector, extending at least 2" past each side of the pipe.

We do not currently stock a pad that covers this. The largest hearth pad we carry is 46 3/4" x 54", which is 10" short of the required 64" depth, so it does not meet the requirement. You will need an oversized pad or floor protection built on site to at least the dimensions above, using steel of at least 0.015" thickness or grouted ceramic tile as the manual specifies. No floor protection is required if the furnace sits on a non-combustible floor such as concrete.

Call us and we will help you source one.

We are very pleased with the Commander II now that it is up and running. However it was delivered with a dead circuit board and missing plenum parts, so we were a month before we could install it.

The Heat Commander has mostly performed as expected. The way the unit automatically controls the airflow through the firebox is really nice, and I rest easy knowing it's getting the most out of the wood I've loaded in. At the end of my second winter with it we've had an issue with the blower all of a sudden. The service technicians were not very helpful, and basically said well shucks I guess you have to buy a new blower motor. I was really hoping that after spending over $4k that everything would last me at least 5 years with routine maintenance. I'm hoping Drolet will offer a warranty replacement on the blower motor even though I am out of the one-year warranty period.

Excellent heating and efficient wood furnace. Plenty of screws and sheet metal for installation. Heavy unit to move down basement steps. Would have been nice to remove rear sheetmetal and fan for tight clearances but it looked a bit difficult. Overall I am happy with it as it heats my house better than my older Russell furnace. Pre-burn outside to burn paint, to avoid smells or do it when you can open windows. I put it into use that same day we got it into place.

My Heat Max only lasted 9 years, which was disappointing for a Drolet product. However, with the discount we got on our new Heat Commander and its performance so far, we are satisfied. (translated from French)

This is my third wood furnance in my home since 1989. I felt really good buying the HEAT COMMANDER furnace because of the stated advances in a "modern furnace" that is EPA Certified. I bought this in August 2023, but due to close to fall heating season in Michigan I decided to wait till next year to install and use my old furnace for the winter of 2023. I also had all my wood cut for my old furnace which had a much larger firebox and I was not going to re-cut my wood to fit the smaller HEAT COMMANDER firebox. I finally installed my new HEAT COMMANDER and had first burn on 05 October 2024. By the way, I found out your warranty starts the day you BUY IT not when you install it. My first problem was a broken ash door and DROLET readily sent me a new one. My second problem in the middle of the winter was my GREEN LIGHT stopped working and after an $85.00 dollar bill received my new light. Your electrical warranty is only 1 year and I did not install it until after 1 year. I installed it myself and now everything works OK. I am amazed the furnace DOES NOT come with any FEET to keep it off the floor and puts the ash door right on the floor. I am 74 years old and that makes opening the ash door very hard for senior people. I solved that by mounting the furnace on a steel platform dolly. The furnace weights around 700 pounds so the dolly makes moving the furnace very easy. I am very disappointed that I cannot get but 3-5 hour burns even with oak firewood packed in the small firebox. I also fought with smoke backup when low fire is present. After living here for 35 years with two other wood furnaces I have never experienced that. I solved the problem by purchasing a GEMI draft inducer. I have talked and consulted with many "wood furnace" experts and DROLET themselves, but have not received any solutions. I may have to move my old furnace back and put the DROLET in my barn. I am not satisfied with the help or the furnace and cannot endorse it with a good conscience.
