Overview

The Carolina Model 21 NC wood stove (FP21) is the same stove Buck Stove sells as the Buck Stove Model 21NC: a mid-size, non-catalytic stove built by New Buck Corporation in Spruce Pine, North Carolina, and sold through ComfortBilt. One firebox does two jobs: stand it on Queen Anne legs as a freestanding stove, or slide it into a brick or stone fireplace as an insert with a trim kit. It heats 800 to 1,800 sq ft, takes 18" logs and averaged 1.7 g/h emissions with 70.5% efficiency (HHV) in EPA testing, with no catalytic combustor to maintain.

Freestanding or fireplace insert: pick your option

ComfortBilt sells the 21 NC as a bare firebox that needs either legs or a trim kit, so we include the one you need:

  • Freestanding includes Carolina Queen Anne legs. Use it in a living room, basement or cabin with a 6" chimney.
  • Fireplace Insert includes the standard 9" Carolina chimney trim kit, which covers the gap between the stove and your fireplace face. Your fireplace opening must be at least 23 1/4" wide, 21" high and 15" deep, with non-combustible hearth or floor protection at least 16" in front and 8" to each side (owner's manual).

Switching install types later, or need a spare? The Queen Anne legs and the FP21 trim kit (standard 9" or oversized 12") are also sold on their own.

Who the Carolina 21 NC suits

  • Homes of roughly 800 to 1,800 sq ft that want a wood stove as the main or backup heat source.
  • Owners of an open masonry fireplace who want real heat from it instead of heat going up the chimney.
  • Buyers who want a simple, non-catalytic stove with no combustor to replace, built in the USA.

Need more heat? The same factory builds the Carolina Model 74 NC (Buck Stove Model 74) for 1,500 to 2,600 sq ft and the Carolina Model 81 (Buck Stove Model 81) for 1,600 to 2,700 sq ft.

A blower is optional. ComfortBilt lists a 185 CFM heat-activated, variable-speed blower kit for this stove; it is not included.

Venting a freestanding install

The 21 NC has a 6" flue outlet. A typical through-the-ceiling setup starts with the AllFuel HST 6" single wall stove adapter, runs AllFuel HST 6" black single wall stove pipe to the ceiling, and connects through the AllFuel HST 6" stove pipe adapter to AllFuel HST 6" Class A chimney pipe held by an AllFuel HST 6" ceiling support box. Or get every ceiling-to-roof part in one order with the AllFuel HST 6" through-the-ceiling Class A chimney kit. For an insert in a masonry chimney, ask your installer whether your chimney needs a liner; our 25' stainless 6" flex liner kit is one option. Contact us before you buy and we will help you check your room.

Clearances and floor protection

From the Model 21 NC owner's manual (download it under Documents on this page):

Insert in a masonry fireplace Minimum
Side wall, combustible 25"
Floor protection in front 16"
Floor protection to each side 8"
Side wood trim 17"
Top wood trim 17"
Mantel or brackets 25"
  • Freestanding: the stove sits on a floor protector of at least 3/8" non-combustible material (or an equivalent R-value). Wall and corner clearances depend on the connector pipe: single wall pipe needs the most room, double wall close-clearance pipe less, and double wall pipe with the optional heat shield the least. See the clearance diagrams in the manual for your layout.
  • Mobile homes: approved when installed per 24 CFR Part 3280 (HUD). Not for sleeping rooms.

Frequently asked questions

Yes. The 21 NC works as a freestanding stove on Queen Anne legs or as an insert in a brick or stone fireplace. As an insert it needs a fireplace opening of at least 23 1/4" wide, 21" high and 15" deep, with at least 10" of hearth depth in front. Choose the Fireplace Insert option to get the standard 9" chimney trim kit with your stove.
ComfortBilt rates it for 800 to 1,800 sq ft. In EPA testing it put out 11,079 to 28,901 BTU/h from low to high burn. Climate, insulation and floor plan all move the real number, so an open, well-insulated home gets closest to the top of that range.
Up to 18" long when loaded side to side, or 11" when loaded front to back. The firebox is 1.6 cu ft (the EPA test report lists 1.4 cu ft of usable volume).
No. It is a non-catalytic stove, so there is no combustor to replace. In EPA testing by Dirigo Laboratories it averaged 1.7 g/h of particulate emissions, under the EPA 2020 limit of 2.0 g/h, with a weighted average efficiency of 70.5% (HHV).
The 21 NC has a 6" flue outlet. For a freestanding install, a typical setup is 6" single-wall connector pipe such as the AllFuel HST 6" black stove pipe up to a 6" Class A chimney like AllFuel HST Class A chimney pipe . Your installer and local code set the final layout.
The Model 21 NC is built in the USA by New Buck Corporation in Spruce Pine, North Carolina, and sold through ComfortBilt. StoveSource is an authorized ComfortBilt dealer.
ComfortBilt does not publish the 21 NC clearance and floor protection figures online; they are in the owner's manual that comes with the stove. Email info@stovesource.com or text 1-888-866-8206 before you buy and we will help you confirm the clearances and floor protection for your room.
