What EPA Certification Means on a Wood Stove

Every new wood stove legally sold in the United States must be EPA certified — but "EPA certified wood stove" still matters as a search because older uncertified stoves are everywhere on the used market, some jurisdictions and insurers demand proof of certification, and the difference between a certified stove and grandpa's smoke dragon is enormous: less wood, less creosote, less smoke, more heat. Here's what the certification actually means, how to read the numbers on a spec sheet, and which certified stoves to consider.

What "EPA 2020 Certified" Means

The current standard is the EPA's 2020 New Source Performance Standard (Step 2), in force since May 15, 2020. To be certified, a wood stove must emit no more than 2.0 grams of particulates per hour when tested with crib wood, or 2.5 g/h when tested with cordwood. Certified stoves achieve this with secondary combustion — reburning the smoke itself — which is why a modern stove extracts far more heat from the same log than a pre-EPA stove while sending far less up the chimney.

There are two engineering routes to that limit: secondary air tubes, which is how every stove we sell does it, and a catalytic combustor, which achieves the same result with a coated honeycomb in the exhaust path. Practical consequences of buying certified:

  • It's the law for new stoves — manufacturers can't sell uncertified new wood stoves, and many municipalities prohibit installing uncertified used ones.
  • Insurance and inspections — insurers and building inspectors commonly ask for the certification label; every certified stove carries a permanent tag, and you can verify any model in the EPA's certified wood heater database.
  • Less creosote — cleaner combustion means slower creosote buildup and lower chimney-fire risk (still sweep annually).
  • Less wood — higher efficiency is the same heat from fewer cords.

The One Number You Can Actually Compare

Here is the most useful thing on this page. Grams per hour is measured the same way for every EPA-certified stove sold in the US. Efficiency and BTU are not. If you only compare one figure across brands, compare g/h.

Why the other two mislead:

Efficiency is published on three different bases. Century Heating publishes all of these for one stove, the FW2900: 69% average overall efficiency (HHV), 74% (LHV), and 77% optimum. Eight points of spread, same appliance, no dishonesty — just three different measurements. Blaze King's flagship shows the same pattern, published as 88% in one place, 81% in another, and 82% HHV in a third.

HHV is the conservative figure used in EPA certification. LHV runs higher. "Optimum" is measured at the stove's best operating point rather than across a realistic burn cycle, and is always the most flattering. A stove advertising 77% and one advertising 69% may be performing identically. Compare HHV to HHV, or don't compare. Advertised BTU is often input, not output. The clearest example: US Stove advertises the Ashley AW2520E-P at 112,800 BTU. Its own owner's manual states the stove delivers heat at 20,374 to 60,065 BTU/hr under EPA test conditions. US Stove explains the difference openly — the advertised figure is maximum BTU input measured in the first hour at high burn; the manual figure is measured output under EPA protocol.

Neither number is fake. They measure different things. But if you size a stove to a room using the marketing figure, you will buy the wrong stove. Century is one of the few brands that publishes the honest range alongside the headline: 14,800 to 28,600 BTU/h overall heat output against a 75,000 BTU/h maximum.

The practical rule: size on firebox volume and compare on g/h. Firebox cubic feet cannot be inflated, and grams per hour is measured identically everywhere.

How to Verify Any Stove's Certification

  1. Check the permanent label on the back of the stove — certified stoves state the standard and tested emissions rate.
  2. Search the EPA's certified wood heater database for the manufacturer and model.
  3. Buying used? If it has no label, assume it's uncertified — many jurisdictions won't permit the install, and insurers may refuse the risk.

The same logic applies to anything site-built. A rocket mass heater has no label and no tested clearances, however well it is constructed, which puts the burden of proof on you rather than on a test laboratory when the inspector or the insurer asks.

What Is and Isn't Covered

Two legitimate exceptions worth knowing.

Cook stoves. Appliances meeting the EPA's definition of a cook stove — an oven of at least 1 cubic foot, an oven rack, a cooking surface, flame path around the oven — are exempt from these emission limits. Coal, oil and gas appliances. The standard applies to wood heaters. It does not apply to heaters fuelled solely by coal, oil or gas, which is why coal-only stoves sit entirely outside this framework and some long-standing designs remain on the market. Certified vs. Uncertified: Why Upgrade

If you're replacing a pre-1990 stove, the math is simple: an old stove can emit many times the particulates of a 2020-certified model and wastes a large share of every log as unburned smoke. A certified stove pays part of its price back in firewood you don't cut, haul or buy — and in creosote your chimney doesn't accumulate. Some states and air districts also run change-out incentive programs for replacing old stoves; check your state's air-quality agency for current local programs.

One thing to disregard while you research: the federal 25C biomass tax credit (30%, up to $2,000) expired December 31, 2025. Many retailer and affiliate pages still advertise it. There is no federal credit for a stove installed in 2026.
