US Stove and Ashley vs Englander: Why the BTU Numbers Do Not Match

US Stove Company has been making stoves since 1869 and sells under several names — Ashley Hearth is the main one you will see at Lowe's and Tractor Supply. The stoves are inexpensive, widely available, and the BTU numbers on the box are enormous.

Those BTU numbers are the reason this article exists. Once you understand what they actually mean, a lot of wood stove shopping gets clearer — not just for US Stove, but across the whole category.

The advertised BTU is not the heat you get

Take the Ashley AW2520E-P. It is advertised at 112,800 BTUs and 2,500 square feet of coverage.

Now here is what US Stove's own owner's manual for that model says. Under EPA test conditions, the heater delivers heat at rates ranging from 20,374 to 60,065 BTU/hr, at 0.88 g/hr emissions and 73% efficiency.

That is not a contradiction anybody is hiding. US Stove explains it plainly on their own website: the advertised BTU is based on maximum BTU input obtained in that stove, measured in the first hour at high burn, while the manual figure is measured output under EPA protocol.

So the honest read on that stove is roughly 60,000 BTU/hr of real sustained output, not 112,800. And 0.88 g/hr at 73% efficiency is genuinely good — that is a clean stove. The performance is fine. The marketing number is just measuring something else.

This applies industry-wide. Any time you see a headline BTU figure with no test method attached, treat it as an input or first-hour maximum, not the heat your room will feel. Compare the EPA-tested output range in the manual, or compare firebox size, which cannot be inflated.

The Ashley Hearth wood range

Model Firebox Advertised BTU Coverage Max log
Ashley AW1120E-P 1.31 cu ft 68,000 1,200 sq ft 18 in
Ashley AW2020-P 2.0 cu ft 89,000 2,000 sq ft 21 in
Ashley AW2520E-P 2.73 cu ft 112,800 2,500 sq ft 21 in

Note the 21-inch log capacity on the two larger models — that is genuinely generous and a real advantage if you cut your own wood. The AW2020-P replaced the older US Stove 2000 and 2016EB; the AW2520E-P replaced the 2500, 2500LN and the Vogelzang Performer TR009, which we cover in our Vogelzang guide.

How Englander compares

Englander Blue Ridge 500 wood stove, front view with glass door

Englander is the closest direct competitor — American-built plate steel at a similar price, sold both online and through big-box. Since 2022 it has been owned by Stove Builder International, the Quebec manufacturer behind Drolet and Osburn, with the Virginia factory continuing production. We explain that history in our SBI brand guide.

The current Blue Ridge line runs from the compact 100 N through the 300P and 300L to the large 500, all EPA 2020 certified. Full specifications are in our Blue Ridge comparison.

Where Englander pulls ahead is the ownership question. Parts, warranty and engineering support run back through SBI, one of the largest hearth manufacturers in North America. For an appliance you expect to run for twenty years, that matters more than the spec sheet.

Where each one makes sense

Buy US Stove or Ashley if price is the binding constraint, you want a 21-inch log capacity, and you are comfortable buying from a big-box floor. The AW2520E-P's 0.88 g/hr is a legitimately clean number and the stoves are simple and serviceable.

Buy Englander if you want American manufacturing with a major parent company behind the warranty, and a dealer who will answer the phone about sizing. Our Blue Ridge line ships free with No Sales Tax.

Either way, size on firebox volume, not the headline BTU. A 2.0 cubic foot firebox is a 2.0 cubic foot firebox regardless of what the box claims.

One more thing to ignore

Several affiliate sites covering Ashley Hearth stoves still advertise a 30% or $2,000 federal biomass tax credit. That credit expired December 31, 2025. Do not budget for it, and be cautious with any seller whose pages still carry it.
