King Pellet Stoves (KP5513, KP5517, KP130, KP5522) vs ComfortBilt: Honest Comparison

King pellet stoves are made by US Stove Company in South Pittsburg, Tennessee, the same company behind Ashley Hearth, the Wiseway and the retired Vogelzang line. You'll find them at Tractor Supply, Lowe's and Menards, usually somewhere between $1,300 and $1,800, with Wi-Fi app control on the current models.

Below is the full King pellet lineup on its published numbers, where it genuinely wins, and how each model stacks up against the ComfortBilt stoves we sell at the same money. Every ComfortBilt we ship comes with No Sales Tax in any state and free shipping.

The King pellet lineup

Model Heats up to Max heat output Hopper Burn time (low) US Stove list price
KP5513-W 1,800 sq ft 25,000 BTU/h 40 lb up to 30 hrs $1,399.99
KP5517-W 2,200 sq ft 30,000 BTU/h 90 lb up to 47 hrs $1,599.99
KP130-W 2,500 sq ft 33,000 BTU/h 130 lb up to 80 hrs $1,599.99
KP5522-W 3,000 sq ft 33,000 BTU/h 170 lb up to 80 hrs $1,799.99

Coverage and list prices from US Stove's pellet stove page; output, hopper and burn times from authorized-retailer listings, October 2026. Big-box prices often run lower: we saw the KP5522-W at $1,499.99 at Tractor Supply and $1,299.99 at Menards. The "-W" models have Wi-Fi; the KP130 also comes as a "-B" version with an infrared remote instead.

Read the numbers before you size one

Two things stand out in that table.

The coverage ratings outrun the heat output. The KP130 and KP5522 both top out at 33,000 BTU/h, yet one is rated for 2,500 sq ft and the other for 3,000. Coverage claims at that ratio lean on long, steady low burns in a well-insulated house, not on heat in reserve for a cold snap. We flagged the same pattern on US Stove's Ashley AP5622, which shares the 170 lb hopper and 33,000 BTU ceiling with the KP5522.

Efficiency is published for only two of the four. Retailer listings show the KP5522-W at 76% efficiency and 1.5 g/h emissions, and the KP130 at 64% and 1.3 g/h. We found no efficiency figure for the KP5513 or KP5517. For comparison, the ComfortBilt models below publish 80–81% EPA-certified efficiency. Before you buy any pellet stove, check which efficiency metric a number refers to; our guide to pellet stove efficiency ratings explains why it matters.

King vs ComfortBilt, model by model

The ComfortBilt Alpine HP40 ($1,099), Alpine HP41 ($1,299) and Alpine HP42 ($1,499) sit right in King's price range. Here is the closest match for each King model:

King model Closest ComfortBilt How they compare
KP5513-W ($1,399.99) Alpine HP41 ($1,299) The HP41 costs less and is rated for more house: 2,200 vs 1,800 sq ft, 32,000 vs 25,000 BTU/h, and a 52 lb hopper (up to 20 hrs) vs 40 lb (up to 30 hrs). The King burns longer per fill.
KP5517-W ($1,599.99) Alpine HP42 ($1,499) The HP42 wins on every headline number: 120 vs 90 lb hopper, up to 80 vs 47 hrs on low, 42,000 vs 30,000 BTU/h, 2,500 vs 2,200 sq ft, for $100 less.
KP130-W ($1,599.99) Alpine HP42 ($1,499) Same 2,500 sq ft rating and the same up-to-80-hour burn claim. The King holds 10 lb more pellets; the HP42 has 9,000 BTU/h more output for cold snaps.
KP5522-W ($1,799.99) Alpine HP42 or HP61 ($2,299) For long burns, the HP42 matches the KP5522's 80-hour claim from a smaller hopper. For a big house, the HP61 is rated to the same 3,000 sq ft at 39,769 BTU/h, 80.1% EPA-certified HHV efficiency and 1.15 g/h emissions. The King keeps the biggest hopper.

Alpine specs from ComfortBilt: the HP40 is 17" wide, rated to 1,500 sq ft and 81% efficient (EPA certified); the HP41 is 80.3% (EPA certified); ComfortBilt lists the HP42 at up to 87.5% HHV on its lowest setting, which is a best-case figure rather than a weighted average.

Where King genuinely wins

  • Built-in Wi-Fi. The -W models run from the US Stove app out of the box. On a ComfortBilt, phone control is an add-on: the BC Innovate Wi-Fi module ($129.99) fits all three Alpines and the HP line. Our thermostat and Wi-Fi guide covers the options.
  • The biggest hopper. At 170 lb, the KP5522-W holds more pellets than any stove we sell. If loading the stove twice a week is the goal, it's a strong answer.
  • You can see one in a store. Being stocked at Tractor Supply, Lowe's and Menards means local returns and the chance to look at the stove before buying.

Where ComfortBilt wins

  • More heat for the money at every price point in the table above.
  • Thermostat control built for daily use. The Alpines run manual, temperature and weekly-schedule modes with a remote included, and the HP42 also takes a wall thermostat. King supports wired thermostats only, not wireless or smart ones.
  • Published efficiency on every model, against two of four for King.
  • No Sales Tax. On a $1,500 stove that is roughly $100 in a typical state, before free shipping.

Owner ratings are worth a look too. At the time of writing, Google Shopping showed the Wi-Fi KP5522 at 2.7 out of 5 across 47 Tractor Supply reviews, and Lowe's showed the KP130 at 3.6 out of 5 across 33.

What the whole job costs

Either brand needs the same extras: 3" pellet vent, a hearth pad, and an outside air kit if you're in a mobile home. For a ComfortBilt, the 3" pellet vent kit ($429) covers a standard through-wall install, and our hearth pad guide shows which pad fits which stove. The pellet stove installation guide walks through the job, and pellet stove venting covers the pipe in detail.

If the reason you're looking at the KP5522 is the longest possible time between fills and budget is flexible, the Drolet ECO-65R ($4,129, Ships in 1–3 days) runs up to 105 hours from a 125 lb hopper at 0.77 g/h, the cleanest stove we carry. It is a much bigger spend; our Drolet pellet stove guide covers it.

Which should you buy?

  • Phone control out of the box and the biggest hopper → a King KP5522-W.
  • Small to mid-size room on a budget → the Alpine HP41, or the 17"-wide Alpine HP40 where floor space is tight.
  • Days between fills at King money → the Alpine HP42.
  • Whole-house heat → the ComfortBilt HP61 or the best-selling HP22.
