What a cheap pellet stove costs you

At this price, every stove gives something up. These are the trade-offs worth checking before you buy:

  • Hopper size. A 25–40 lb hopper means filling it every day in cold weather. A 120–130 lb hopper means every two or three days.
  • Controls. Many budget stoves run on a dial or a few fixed heat levels. Thermostat control and weekly scheduling are what let a pellet stove run itself.
  • Coverage claims. Budget stoves often quote a big square-footage number on modest heat output. Size on BTU output and your climate, not the box. Our efficiency guide explains how to read the numbers.
  • Parts and support. Auger motors, igniters and control boards wear out on every pellet stove. Buy a brand you can still get parts for in ten years; our guides to Vogelzang and Whitfield show what happens when you can't.
  • The register total. Sales tax and delivery can add $100–$250 to a big-box price. We charge neither.

Our picks under $1,500

The three ComfortBilt Alpine models are the cheapest pellet stoves we sell, and each is EPA certified with automatic ignition, temperature control, weekly scheduling and a remote.

ComfortBilt Alpine HP41 compact pellet stove, 18.5 inches wide
Model Price Heats up to Max output Hopper / burn time Width
Alpine HP40 $1,099 1,500 sq ft 26,000 BTU/h 25 lb 17"
Alpine HP41 $1,299 2,200 sq ft 32,000 BTU/h 52 lb, up to 20 hrs 18.5"
Alpine HP42 $1,499 2,500 sq ft 42,000 BTU/h 120 lb, up to 80 hrs 24.75"
  • Best for most budget buyers: the Alpine HP41. It covers a living area, finished basement or small home, in a cabinet narrow enough for tight spots, at 80.3% EPA-certified efficiency.
  • Best for fewer refills: the Alpine HP42. A 120 lb hopper for under $1,500, and the most heat output of the three.
  • Best for one room or a tight space: the Alpine HP40. The lowest price we have, 17 inches wide and 81% EPA certified, but the 25 lb hopper means filling it most days.

If you can stretch past $1,500, the ComfortBilt HP50S ($1,899) and the best-selling HP22 ($2,399) add published EPA emissions figures and more coverage. Our ComfortBilt lineup guide compares the full range.

Don't forget the rest of the budget

The stove is only part of the cost. Every pellet stove needs 3" pellet vent (our ComfortBilt pellet vent kit is $429 for a standard through-wall install), a non-combustible hearth pad, and an outside air kit in a mobile home. Our pellet stove prices guide totals the whole job, and the hearth pad guide shows which pad fits. Our pellet stove installation guide covers the parts, cost and steps.

Two places not to save money: venting, which must be listed pellet vent rather than dryer duct or single-wall pipe, and floor protection. Both are about fire safety and your insurance, not comfort.

Is a used pellet stove cheaper?

Sometimes, but rarely by as much as it looks. A pellet stove is a machine with an auger motor, igniter, blowers and a control board, and those are exactly the parts that fail on older stoves. For a heated shop, a used stove that runs can make sense. For heating your home, a new budget stove with a warranty and current parts usually costs less over a few winters.

Where to buy

Many of these stoves are on the shelf at Tractor Supply, Home Depot, Lowe's and Menards; our guide to pellet stoves at Tractor Supply, Home Depot and Lowe's covers what each store carries and who makes the store brands.
