Ashley Wood Stoves: Lineup Guide & How They Compare to Drolet
Share
Ashley is one of the oldest names in American wood heat. If you grew up around a wood-heated farmhouse, there's a decent chance an Ashley circulator was doing the work. Today the brand lives on as Ashley Hearth Products, made by US Stove Company — and the current lineup is a very different animal from the classic Ashleys of decades past.
This guide covers the full modern Ashley Hearth wood stove lineup, what happened to the old models, and how Ashley compares to Drolet, the Canadian brand we carry that competes head-to-head at similar price points.
The Modern Ashley Hearth Wood Stove Lineup
| Model | Heats up to | Max BTU* | Log length | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| AW1120E-P | 1,200 sq ft | 68,000 | 18" | Pedestal, replaces Vogelzang TR001 series |
| AW2020E-P | 2,000 sq ft | 89,000 | 21" | 2.0 cu ft firebox, replaces US Stove 2000/2016EB |
| AW2520E-P | 2,500 sq ft | 112,800 | 21" | Replaces US Stove 2500/2500LN & Vogelzang Performer TR009 |
| AW1820E | — | — | — | Wood stove insert for masonry fireplaces |
*Advertised BTU figures are manufacturer ratings based on the first hour at high burn burning cordwood. EPA test-protocol output ranges are lower — for example, the AW2520E's owner's manual lists an EPA-test heat delivery range of 20,374–60,065 BTU/hr at 73% efficiency and 0.88 g/hr emissions.
All three freestanding models are EPA 2020 Step 2 certified and mobile home approved (USA), with firebrick-lined fireboxes, integrated ash pans, and arched glass doors.
What Happened to the Old Ashley Wood Stoves?
Searching for a stove like the one your grandparents had? The classic Ashley cabinet circulators (the Ashley Imperial and Columbian-era heaters) haven't been produced in that form for years. The 2020 EPA emission standards ended production of most older-style designs industry-wide.
The practical takeaway: parts support for vintage Ashleys is limited, and no modern stove burns like a pre-EPA circulator — today's stoves use secondary combustion, which means less wood, less creosote, and far less smoke. If you're replacing an old Ashley, any current EPA Step 2 stove in the right size class is the path forward.
Ashley vs. Drolet: Head-to-Head
Ashley Hearth's closest competitor in the mid-size class is the Drolet Escape 1800. Here's how the two flagship mid-large stoves compare on manufacturer-published specs:
| Spec | Ashley AW2520E-P | Drolet Escape 1800 |
|---|---|---|
| Heating area | up to 2,500 sq ft | up to 2,100 sq ft |
| Max heat output | 112,800 BTU (advertised) | 75,000 BTU/h |
| Firebox | — | 2.4 cu ft |
| Log length | 21" | 20" |
| Burn time | — | up to 8 hours |
| EPA emissions | 0.88 g/h (per manual) | 1.54 g/h |
| Construction | plate steel, firebrick lined | 5/16" steel top w/ stainless heat shield |
| Mobile home approved | Yes (USA) | Yes (+ alcove certified) |
| Warranty | Limited warranty | Limited lifetime |
| Made in | USA | Canada & USA |
Where Ashley wins: advertised heating area and peak BTU on paper, wide big-box availability, and continuity with the US Stove/Vogelzang models it replaced — if you're replacing a Vogelzang Performer TR009, the AW2520E is the direct successor.
Where Drolet wins: published burn time, heavier steel construction, limited lifetime warranty on the appliance, and a broader model range — from the compact Spark II up to the HT-3000 for larger homes. Drolet also publishes full EPA test data (efficiency, emissions, firebox volume) on every spec sheet, which makes apples-to-apples sizing easier.
A note on BTU comparisons: Ashley's 112,800 figure is a first-hour peak; Drolet's 75,000 BTU/h is a maximum output figure from its published spec sheet. Compare heating area, firebox volume, and burn time rather than headline BTU alone — they're better predictors of real-world performance.
Which Should You Buy?
- Replacing an old Vogelzang or US Stove model → the matching Ashley Hearth successor is the drop-in choice.
- Heating 1,000–2,100 sq ft and want longer burns → the Drolet Escape 1800 offers an 8-hour burn time and lifetime warranty.
- Heating over 2,100 sq ft → step up to the Drolet HT-3000, Drolet's largest stove.
- Fireplace insert instead of freestanding → compare the Ashley AW1820E against the Drolet Escape 1800-I insert (2.4 cu ft, blower included).
