How to find the right fire brick
Fire brick is sold by size, so the fastest way to the right part is to measure one of the bricks already in your stove: length, width and thickness. Most stoves use more than one size — often a full-size brick on the floor and back, with narrower cut bricks at the sides or around the door opening. Measure each shape you need to replace.
If you know your stove model, use the size chart above or open your model's parts page from stove replacement parts, which lists the exact bricks your stove takes. Your owner's manual also shows the brick layout and part numbers.
Standard vs. high-density fire brick
The 4-1/2" x 9" x 1-1/4" brick is the industry's standard size and fits many wood stoves from different brands. High-density brick is heavier and more durable, and it is what SBI specifies for some of its inserts and stoves. Replace like with like: if your manual calls for high-density brick, use high-density brick.
When to replace fire brick
Hairline cracks are normal and are not a reason to replace a brick — the brick still protects the firebox. Replace a brick when it is broken through, has pieces missing, or has worn thin enough that you can see the steel behind it. Bricks usually simply sit in place, held by the stove's side brackets or by the bricks around them, so most can be swapped in a few minutes on a cold stove.
Fire brick FAQs
Is fire brick the same as refractory brick?
Yes. Refractory brick is the manufacturer's term; fire brick or firebrick is what most people call it. Every brick on this page is a genuine factory refractory brick.
Can I cut a fire brick to fit?
Yes, fire brick can be cut with a masonry blade or scored and snapped. Buying the exact factory size saves time and gives a tighter fit, which is why we list each SBI size separately.
Do you charge sales tax?
No. StoveSource charges no sales tax in any state, and orders over $250 ship free to the lower 48.
