Pellet Stove Error Codes by Brand: What E1, E2 and E3 Mean
No Sales Tax in any state on stoves and parts. Pellet stove error codes are not universal, so the same code can mean three different things:
- Englander (also Summers Heat, Timber Ridge): E1 means vacuum loss, E2 means failed to start, E3 means over temperature. The 25-CBPAH, 25-PAH and 25-EP don't use E1.
- Ashley, King, Vogelzang and US Stove: E1 means overheating, E2 means an airflow (vacuum) fault, E3 means the fire went out.
- Cleveland Iron Works and Grand Teton: E1 means the fire went out, E2 means it failed to ignite. There is no E3.
Pick your brand and code below for the checks in order, cheapest first, and the part that usually fixes it. Every code on this page comes from the maker's own manual.
Choose your brand, then the code on your display.
Your stove isn't listed? Most faults come down to the same few causes. Start with our pellet stove troubleshooting guide.
Before you open anything: let the stove cool and unplug it. Never shut a running stove down by unplugging it, and never leave a safety switch bypassed. If the stove has filled with smoke, open an outside door and a window before you open the stove door or hopper lid.

All of these United States Stove Company models use a flashing two-digit display, and the codes do not match Englander's: here E2 is an airflow fault, not a failed start. Wiseway stoves are non-electric gravity-feed models, so they have no error codes.

How to reset a pellet stove
A reset only clears the code. It doesn't fix the cause, so work through the checks first. If the same code comes straight back, stop and find out why. Here is how each maker's manual says to do it:
↔ Swipe the table to see more →
| Stove | How to reset it |
|---|---|
| Englander 25-PDVC, 25-PDV | Press ON once. Pressing it again during start-up restarts the cycle. If the code stays, call Technical Support before trying again. |
| Englander 25-CBPAH, 25-PAH, 25-EP | Press ON. The stove clears the code and restarts. |
| Ashley, King, Vogelzang, US Stove | Let the stove shut down fully, then press the On/Off button. Some units also have a reset button on the high limit switch. Let the stove cool 30 to 45 minutes first. |
| Cleveland Iron Works, Grand Teton | Fix the cause, press Confirm to clear the display, then follow the normal start-up. |
| Castle Serenity | Let the stove cool, then restart it from the controller. Press the button on the mechanical over-temp switch if the auger won't feed in diagnostics. |
| PelPro, Pleasant Hearth, Quadra-Fire Mt. Vernon E2 | Turn the dial to OFF, wait 10 seconds and turn it back. Or unplug the stove once it is cool, wait 10 seconds and restore power. |
| Harman P-series | 5 and 6 blinks: turn the Mode Selector to OFF, then back on. 3 blinks: disconnect the power cord for a few seconds. 2 and 4 blinks clear by themselves once the fault is fixed. |
| Quadra-Fire Castile, Santa Fe, Classic Bay 1200 | Press the reset button on the back of the stove. If it overheated, reset the snap disc on the feed tube. |
| Drolet ECO-55, ECO-65R | Press RESET, then MODE. After an H code, press MODE and RESET together (3 seconds on the ECO-55, 2 on the ECO-65R). Three H codes lock the control until you do the maintenance and enter the unlock sequence in your manual. |
| ComfortBilt, Alpine | Press and hold the On/Off button for 5 seconds. |
| Enviro M55 | Push the ON/OFF button. The high limit switch needs a manual reset: call your dealer. |
| St. Croix | Re-light the stove. If the board stops responding, unplug it, wait 10 seconds and plug it back in. |
What E2 means on a pellet stove
E2 is the most searched pellet stove code, and it has no single meaning. On most stoves it is either a failed start or an airflow fault, so check your brand before you buy a part. The igniter that can fix an Englander E2 does nothing for an airflow fault on an Ashley.
↔ Swipe the table to see more →
| Stove | What E2 means | First thing to check |
|---|---|---|
| Englander 25-PDVC, 25-PDV | Fail to start | Clean burn pot, heat sensor, igniter |
| Englander 25-CBPAH, 25-PAH, 25-EP | Failure to light | Clean burn pot, then restart on 5 or higher |
| Ashley, King, Vogelzang, US Stove | Airflow (vacuum) fault | Door and gasket, air switch hose, combustion blower |
| Cleveland Iron Works, Grand Teton | Failure to ignite | Clinkers, fire pot seating, igniter |
On a brand-new Englander, E-2 after the 20-minute dry run with no pellets is normal: fill the hopper and press ON. "E2" on a Quadra-Fire Mt. Vernon E2 is the model name, not a code. If your Englander shows E-2 often, our Englander guide covers it step by step, and our igniter replacement guide shows how to swap the igniter.
Frequently asked questions
What does E2 mean on a pellet stove?
It depends on the brand. On an Englander it means the stove failed to start. On Ashley, King and Vogelzang stoves it means an airflow (vacuum) fault. On Cleveland Iron Works and Grand Teton stoves it means the fuel failed to ignite.
What does E1 mean on a pellet stove?
On Englander 25-PDVC and 25-PDV stoves E1 means vacuum loss. On Ashley, King and Vogelzang stoves it means overheating and a tripped high limit switch. On Cleveland Iron Works and Grand Teton stoves it means the exhaust cooled and the fire went out. Englander 25-CBPAH, 25-PAH and 25-EP stoves do not use E1.
What does E3 mean on a pellet stove?
On Englander stoves E3 means the stove went over its temperature limit. On Ashley, King and Vogelzang stoves it means the fire went out, usually from an empty hopper. Cleveland Iron Works and Grand Teton stoves have no E3.
How do I reset a pellet stove?
Englander: press ON once. ComfortBilt: hold On/Off for 5 seconds. PelPro: turn the dial off, wait 10 seconds and turn it back. Harman: turn the Mode Selector off and back on. Fix the cause first, or the code will come back.
Do all pellet stoves use the same error codes?
No. Each maker has its own list, and some use blinking lights or words instead of codes. Harman, PelPro and Quadra-Fire use blink counts, ComfortBilt uses alert messages, and St. Croix uses numbered lights.
Can I keep restarting a pellet stove that shows a code?
Not if the code comes back. Englander says to call Technical Support if a code stays after one reset, and overheat codes need an inspection and cleaning before you run the stove again. Do not bypass a safety switch to keep a stove running.
