Quadra-Fire Pellet Stove Troubleshooting: Won't Light, Won't Feed, Shuts Down

Most Quadra-Fire pellet stove problems come down to a short list: a dirty firepot, a clogged vacuum hose, a blocked vent, a tripped snap disc or one worn part. This guide walks through each symptom in the order Quadra-Fire's own service charts check it, cheapest fix first, then names the part that solves it. It's built from the troubleshooting tables in the Quadra-Fire Classic Bay 1200 and Santa Fe Insert manuals, which share the same 3-speed control system as the Castile and Contour.

Quick answer: the three most common Quadra-Fire faults

  1. Call light on, no fire, unburned pellets in the pot: clean the firepot and scrape the ignition hole. If the igniter doesn't glow red at start-up, replace it. The 800, 1000 and 1100i with the original ceramic pot take the 812-0180 ceramic igniter.
  2. Exhaust blower runs but nothing feeds or lights, yellow light flashing: a thermocouple fault. Castile, Mt. Vernon, Santa Fe and Contour take the 14" thermocouple 812-4470; the 800, 1000, 1100i and Classic Bay 1200 take the 34-3/4" thermocouple 812-0210.
  3. Won't feed even with a full hopper: no vacuum. Check the vacuum hose and vent, then the SRV7000-531 vacuum switch, then the feed motor.

Which Quadra-Fire do you have?

The model name and serial number are on the rating label, usually on the back of the stove or behind a side panel. The parts split into two groups:

  • 3-speed control models: Castile, Classic Bay 1200, Contour and Santa Fe (stoves and inserts). They use the SRV7000-704 control box, a red call light, three snap discs and the 2.4 RPM feed motor. Mt. Vernon stoves share many of the same parts. The troubleshooting below follows these manuals.
  • 800 (Nova), 1000 and 1100i insert: the older line. They share the vacuum switch and the long thermocouple with the Classic Bay 1200, but use their own auger motors, blowers and burn pot. See the parts notes in each section.

Before you open anything: let the stove cool completely and unplug it. Quadra-Fire marks its troubleshooting chart as a guide for a qualified service technician, so if a step involves wiring you're not comfortable with, call a hearth tech.

Call light on, but no fire

Quadra-Fire ceramic igniter 812-0180 for the 800, 1000 and 1100i pellet stoves with the original ceramic burn pot

The red call light means the thermostat is calling for heat. What's in the firepot tells you where to look.

Firepot is empty

  1. Fill the hopper. If it ran out, refill it and press the reset button.
  2. Close the door tightly. The #2 snap disc and the vacuum circuit both stop the feed if the firebox isn't sealed.
  3. Check the vacuum system. Make sure the exhaust blower is running, the vacuum switch is plugged in, and the vacuum hose is in good condition, clear and connected at both ends. Clean the vent. A failed switch is the last thing to suspect; the replacement is the SRV7000-531 vacuum switch with hose, which fits every Quadra-Fire model in this guide.
  4. Check the thermocouple is plugged in and undamaged (see below).

Partly burned fuel in the firepot

The fire started and went out. Quadra-Fire lists two causes: the firepot clean-out plate isn't fully closed, or the firepot is dirty and the stove missed its ignition. Close the plate completely and clean out the pot, breaking up any clinkers with the scraper tool.

Unburned pellets in the firepot

  1. Check the clean-out plate and clean the firepot.
  2. Scrape the ignition hole with a solid piece of wire. A plugged hole stops hot air reaching the pellets.
  3. Remove the ash drawer and watch the igniter at start-up. It should glow red.
  4. If it doesn't, check the wire connections (1/4" spade connectors), then replace the igniter.

Which igniter? The 800, 1000 and 1100i came with a ceramic burn pot that takes the 812-0180 ceramic igniter. Stoves converted to the cast-iron EZ-Clean burn pot 812-3281 use a loop-style igniter instead, so check which pot you have before ordering. For other models, see pellet stove igniters or call us with your serial number.

Exhaust blower runs, but no feed and no igniter

Quadra-Fire 14 inch pellet stove thermocouple 812-4470 for the Castile, Mt. Vernon, Santa Fe and Contour

This is the thermocouple. Quadra-Fire's manual says a flashing yellow light on the control box indicates a thermocouple problem. The thermocouple tells the control box there's a fire; when it fails, the stove won't feed or light, or it shuts down soon after starting.

  1. Check the connection at the control box.
  2. Check its position. It should stick about 3/4" into the firepot, and its tip must touch the inside end of the thermocouple cover, or you'll get missed ignitions.
  3. Replace it if the light keeps flashing. The length matters:

Won't feed pellets

A full hopper and an empty firepot is a feed problem. Quadra-Fire checks these in order:

  1. Out of fuel or a tripped #2 snap disc. Refill and make sure the firebox door is closed securely.
  2. Lost vacuum. Exhaust blower, vacuum switch, hose, thermocouple and vent. The manual also notes that high wind blowing into the vent can pressurize the firebox and break the vacuum.
  3. Jammed feed. Empty the hopper with a wet/dry vacuum, including the feed tube, and check the feed chute for anything blocking it.
  4. Feed spring not turning with the motor. Tighten the set screw on the feed spring shaft.
  5. Failed feed motor. Check its connections first. Castile, Mt. Vernon, Santa Fe, Contour and Classic Bay 1200 use a 2.4 RPM motor: the 812-4421 kit comes with its mounting bracket, while the lower-cost 12-1020 reuses your old bracket. The 800 and 1000 use the 1 RPM 812-0170 auger motor; the 1100i uses the 2 RPM 812-1220. The RPM must match your stove.

Parts for this fix: pellet stove auger motors.

Nuisance shutdowns and a low flame

The stove lights, then dies down or shuts itself off. Quadra-Fire's causes:

  • Sawdust build-up in the hopper. Fines slow the feed. Open the feed rate adjustment rod in the hopper a little, and empty and clean the hopper.
  • Feed motor reversing. Check the connections between the feed motor and the wire harness.
  • Firepot more than half full of ash. High-ash pellets need cleaning more often (see the maintenance table).
  • Failed thermocouple or control box. Replace the thermocouple first, since it's the cheaper part. If the box itself has failed, the SRV7000-704 3-speed control box fits the Castile, Classic Bay 1200, Contour and Santa Fe.

No power, or no call light

  1. Dead when plugged in: check the breaker, replace the 7 amp fuse, and reset the #3 snap disc. If the #3 disc keeps tripping, find out why before you keep resetting it.
  2. Power but no call light: set the thermostat above room temperature and check its wiring. Quadra-Fire's test is to bypass the thermostat with a jumper wire at the terminal block. If the stove starts, the thermostat or its wire is the problem.
  3. Still nothing: replace the control box.

Blower problems

Quadra-Fire 1100i large EBM convection blower 812-1121
  • Room (convection) blower won't start: on the 3-speed models, check the #1 snap disc and that the blower is plugged into the harness. Once the stove shuts down, the room blower keeps running until the stove cools, which is normal.
  • Exhaust blower won't start or won't shut off: make sure it's plugged in and clean the ash out of it and the vent. It normally runs for about 10 minutes after the thermostat is satisfied.
  • Noisy, squealing or slow blower: replace it. The 1100i has two convection blowers, a large one (812-1121) and a small one (812-1100), plus the 812-1110 combustion blower. Compare sizes with your old blower before ordering.

Parts for this fix: pellet stove exhaust and room blowers.

Lazy flame, black glass or a smoky start

A large, lazy orange flame and black ash on the glass mean too much fuel for the air getting through it. Quadra-Fire lists a dirty stove, high-ash pellets, a clean-out plate that isn't fully closed, and too high a feed rate. Clean the firepot, heat exchanger and vent, pull the stainless baffle and clean the ash off its top, clean behind the rear brick panels, and try a premium pellet. A slow or smoky start-up has the same causes, plus too much fuel at start-up: turn the feed rate down with the adjustment rod in the hopper. See how to choose pellets.

Maintenance that prevents most of this

Task How often (Quadra-Fire)
Clean the firepot with rod and scraper Daily, or more often as needed
Empty and clean the firepot (hardwood pellets) Every 3 bags
Empty and clean the firepot (softwood pellets) Every 5 bags
Firepot with high-ash fuel As soon as ash passes halfway
Ash pan (wood pellets) Every 5 bags

The full routine is in our pellet stove maintenance schedule.

When repair stops making sense

The Castile, Classic Bay 1200, Contour, Santa Fe, 800, 1000 and 1100i are no longer made. One part is worth replacing; a control box, feed motor and both blowers in the same season can come close to the price of a new stove. Our Quadra-Fire vs ComfortBilt comparison covers what the current models cost. The ComfortBilt HP22 is the usual swap for a freestanding Quadra-Fire, and the ComfortBilt HP22i insert replaces a Santa Fe Insert or 1100i in a fireplace. See current Quadra-Fire prices to compare.

Frequently asked questions

Why is the yellow light flashing on my Quadra-Fire pellet stove?

Quadra-Fire's manual says a flashing yellow light on the control box means a thermocouple problem. Check that the thermocouple is plugged in and sits about 3/4" into the firepot, then replace it if the light keeps flashing.

How do I reset a Quadra-Fire pellet stove?

After it runs out of fuel, fill the hopper and press the reset button. The call light goes out while you hold it and comes back on when you let go. If the whole unit is dead, the #3 snap disc may have tripped; it has its own reset.

Why won't my Quadra-Fire feed pellets?

Usually there's no vacuum: the door isn't sealed, the vacuum hose is cracked or clogged, or the vent is blocked. After that, check for a jam in the feed tube, a loose set screw on the feed spring, and the feed motor.

How long does a Quadra-Fire run on high at start-up?

The Classic Bay 1200 and Santa Fe start on high for about 4 minutes, then drop to the heat setting you've chosen.

Do these fixes apply to the Heatilator Eco-Choice?

Largely, yes. The Heatilator Eco-Choice PS35, PS50 and CAB50 were built by the same company and share the 14" thermocouple, vacuum switch and 2.4 RPM feed motor. See our Heatilator pellet stove guide.
