Harman Pellet Stove Troubleshooting: Blink Codes, Won't Light and Fixes
Share
When a Harman pellet stove won't light, won't feed or shuts itself down, the status light usually tells you why. This guide decodes Harman's blink codes on the P43, P61A and P68, then works through each symptom cheapest fix first and names the part that solves it. It follows the troubleshooting section of Harman's P-Series owner's manual, and most of it applies to the P61, XXV, Accentra and Advance too, since they share many of the same parts.
Quick answer: the most common Harman faults
- 5 blinks, won't light: the stove didn't light within its 36-minute start cycle. Clean the burn pot and scrape scale off the igniter; if it still won't light, replace the 13-1129 igniter.
- 6 blinks, fire went out or burns dirty: poor combustion for more than 25 minutes. Refill the hopper, clean the burn pot and combustion blower; a weak or noisy blower is the 10-1118 exhaust blower motor.
- Loud or dead room blower: the P43, P61, P61A and P68 take the 11-1223 convection blower; the XXV and Accentra freestanding take the 11-1225.

Harman status light blink codes
Count the blinks on the status light, then check this table. Most codes clear by turning the Mode Selector to OFF and back on once the cause is fixed.

| Blinks | What Harman says it means | How it resets | Check / part |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2 | Open feed circuit, usually the pressure switch or hopper switch | Clears itself once the circuit closes | Hopper lid and door shut, gaskets, vent draft |
| 3 | ESP (exhaust sensing probe) failed, disconnected, or out of range too many times | Unplug the stove for a few seconds, plug back in | ESP wire and connection, then the ESP probe: black wires on earlier stoves (13-5011), red wires on later serials (13-5010) |
| 4 | Room sensing probe failed or not installed (Room Temp mode only) | Clears once a probe is installed | Room probe; the stove won't start in AUTO |
| 5 | Failed to light within the 36-minute start cycle (Automatic Ignition only) | Mode Selector OFF, then back on | Burn pot, then the 13-1129 igniter |
| 6 | Poor or incomplete combustion for more than 25 minutes (also set when it runs out of pellets) | Mode Selector OFF, then back on | Pellets, burn pot, exhaust blower 10-1118 |
Before opening any panel, turn the stove off, let it cool completely and unplug it.
5 blinks: the stove won't light

In Automatic Ignition the stove starts on high and drops to your setting after about 7 to 10 minutes. If it hasn't lit within 36 minutes, it stops and blinks 5 times.
- Clean the burn pot. Scrape it hard, especially around the neck, and push the supplied Allen wrench through each grate hole with the pot cold. Ash in the holes starves the igniter of air.
- Knock the scale off the igniter. Harman's monthly routine is to brush and vacuum the ash around the igniter and tap the scraper on the burn pot to knock scale off the element.
- Check the wiring. The igniter connects through insulated male/female connectors, and the leads must be pulled to the inside rear of the feeder, not coiled in the burn pot where they burn.
- Replace the igniter. The 13-1129 16-fin, 306W igniter fits the P35i, P43, P61A, P68, Absolute43, Accentra, Advance and XXV, and cross-references Harman 3-20-677200, 1-10-06620 and 3-20-06783.
Need heat tonight? Harman allows manual (emergency) lighting: set the igniter switch to disabled and the Mode Selector to OFF, fill the burn pot only halfway, add a pellet-stove fire starter (gel, wax chips or starter blocks), light it, close the door and switch to Constant Burn. Only do this on a cold stove; if automatic ignition was just tried, wait at least 30 minutes. Never use any other fuel.

6 blinks: the fire went out or burns dirty

The ESP saw poor combustion for more than 25 minutes. The most common cause is simply an empty hopper. If it wasn't empty:
- Check the pellets. Damp or low-quality pellets burn poorly. See how to pick pellets.
- Clean the burn pot and its clean-out chamber. Monthly, or after every ton, remove the clean-out cover (two wing screws) and empty the bottom chamber.
- Clean the combustion blower. Monthly, remove the combustion intake cover and brush the fly ash off the fan blades, then clean the exhaust passage, taking care not to hit the ESP.
- Check the door and hopper gaskets. A gasket leak lowers the draft and makes the fire rich and smoky.
- Replace a weak exhaust blower. If the combustion blower is noisy, slow or grinding after cleaning, fit the 10-1118 exhaust blower motor. It's the motor with wires only, so move your fan blade and mounting hardware over from the old one.
The stove doesn't feed
Harman's manual lists these causes:
- No pellets in the hopper.
- Low draft, so the pressure switch won't close (often shows as 2 blinks). Check for an open door, an unlatched hopper lid, and loose or missing gaskets.
- The ESP hasn't reached temperature yet. The feeder won't run until the probe senses a set temperature. After a manual light, this usually means too little fuel or starter gel.
- Something blocking the hopper or feeder. Empty the hopper and clear it.
- A failed feed motor.
Smoke, low heat or a lazy flame
↔ Swipe the table to see more →
| Symptom | Cause (Harman) | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Partly burned pellets in the pot | Feed rate too high, poor air mix, dirty pot or heat exchanger tubes | Lower the feed, check the clean-out cover and air intake, clean the pot and tubes |
| Smoke from the vent | Too rich: feed too high, or low draft from a gasket leak | Lower the feed, fix the gasket |
| Low heat output | Feed too low, gasket leak, poor or damp pellets | Adjust the Feed Limit, fix the gasket, change pellets |
| Smoke smell in the room | Leak at the vent joints or stove connection | Seal the joints with high-temp silicone |
| Tall flame with black tails | Too much feed, dirty pot, heat exchanger or exhaust blower | Lower the feed, clean |
| Black soot on the glass | Excess ash, worse at low burn | Clean; burn hotter |
| Puffs of smoke at start-up | Dirty burn pot, or too much fuel with too little air | Clean the pot; don't repeat the TEST feed cycle |
Adjusting the Feed Limit: it's set to #4 at the factory, which suits most pellets. Burn for 15 minutes before adjusting and give each change another 15 minutes to show. The TEST setting runs exactly one 60-second feed cycle; running it repeatedly overloads the pot and causes a smoky start.
Noisy or dead room blower

A room blower that squeals, grinds or won't spin needs replacing. Match the Harman number on your old blower:
- 11-1223 convection blower (Harman 3-21-33647 / 3-21-22647): P38+, P43, P61, P61A, P68, PC45, Advance, Pellet Pro II and Invincible. The Absolute63, Accentra 52i and Allure 50 use two.
- 11-1225 convection blower (Harman 1-00-29145 / 3-21-29045): XXV, XXV-TC and Accentra freestanding. It doesn't fit the P35i.
Metallic ticking as the stove heats and cools is normal expansion, not a blower fault.
Dead display, or nothing responds
Check the outlet and the power cord first, then unplug the stove for a few seconds and plug it back in. If the board still won't power up or respond with good power, the 1-00-05886 4-output control board fits the P43, P61A, P68, XXV, Accentra and Advance, and replaces Harman 3-20-04220, 3-20-05374, 3-20-05237, 3-20-05292 and 3-20-05886. It's the expensive part, so rule out the cheaper causes above before replacing it.

Harman's cleaning schedule
| When | Task |
|---|---|
| Each refuel (at least every 3 bags) | Scrape the burn pot |
| Weekly | Scrape the pot sides and clear every grate hole |
| Monthly or every ton | Burn pot clean-out chamber, combustion blower blades, ash around the igniter |
| Yearly | Full clean: combustion fan, vent and exhaust path |
Use an ash vacuum with a fine (HEPA) filter, and only once the stove is completely cold; see why a shop vac is the wrong tool. More in our pellet stove maintenance schedule.
Repair or replace?
Harman's manual notes the P43, P61A and P68 were not approved for sale after May 15, 2020, but parts remain easy to get, and an igniter or blower is well worth replacing. If yours needs the board, the exhaust blower and the room blower in one season, compare the cost against a new stove. Our Harman P43 vs ComfortBilt HP22 and Harman P68 vs ComfortBilt comparisons cover the closest current stoves, like the ComfortBilt HP22 and ComfortBilt HP61, and Harman pellet stove prices lists what a new Harman costs.
Frequently asked questions
Why is my Harman pellet stove blinking 5 times?
It failed to light within its 36-minute start cycle in Automatic Ignition mode. Clean the burn pot, knock the scale off the igniter, and check the igniter wiring. If it still won't light, replace the igniter. Reset by turning the Mode Selector to OFF and back on.
What does 6 blinks mean on a Harman?
Poor or incomplete combustion for more than 25 minutes. It's often just an empty hopper. Otherwise check the pellets, clean the burn pot and combustion blower, and check the door gaskets.
How do I reset a Harman pellet stove?
For 5 and 6 blinks, turn the Mode Selector to OFF, then back to your mode. For 3 blinks (ESP), unplug the stove for a few seconds and plug it back in. 2 and 4 blinks clear themselves once the cause is fixed.
Why won't my Harman feed pellets?
The feeder won't run until the ESP senses enough heat, and it stops if the pressure switch loses draft. Check the hopper lid, door and gaskets, look for a blockage in the hopper, and make sure the stove actually lit.
Can I light a Harman manually if the igniter is out?
Yes, as an emergency measure. Disable the igniter, fill the burn pot halfway, use only a pellet-stove fire starter, and run it in Constant Burn. Harman says to repair the igniter as soon as practical.
