HearthStone vs Drolet: Is Soapstone Worth the Premium?
Share
Updated October 2026
HearthStone has been building soapstone stoves in Morrisville, Vermont since 1978, and they make something genuinely distinctive. Soapstone absorbs the fire's heat and releases it slowly for hours after the flames die down — the Mansfield packs over 230 lbs of it. If you want a stove that feels like a warm rock in the room rather than a hot steel box, nothing else on the market does quite the same thing.
They're also dealer-only, premium-priced, and their whole current range runs on a catalyst. Here's the full lineup and an honest, model-by-model comparison against Drolet, which we ship direct.
The HearthStone wood stove lineup
As of August 2026, HearthStone's wood range runs the Bari (8171), Green Mountain series (40/60/80), Craftsbury (8392), Shelburne (8372), Manchester (8362), Castleton (8031), Heritage (8024), and Mansfield (8013) — in soapstone, cast iron, or a mix of both. Figures below are HearthStone's and their dealers':
| Model | Coverage | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Heritage 8024 | ~1,900 sq ft | 60,000 BTU/h · 0.54 g/h · side-loading door · 21" logs |
| Mansfield 8013 | ~2,500 sq ft | Largest soapstone model · 230+ lbs of stone · 550 lbs total |
| Castleton / Shelburne / Manchester | Mid-size | Soapstone and cast iron variants |
| Green Mountain 40 / 60 / 80 | Small to large | Contemporary styling |
| Bari 8171 | Compact | Small-space model |
Credit where it's due: the Heritage at 0.54 g/h is one of the cleanest wood stoves sold in North America. That's a real number and it's excellent.
HearthStone vs Drolet on price
HearthStone sells only through dealers, but it does publish list prices. For 2026 they run from $2,549 for the small Lincoln to $8,899 for the Bari, with the Heritage from $4,999 and the Manchester from $5,449, stove only. Every model, the three inserts and what installation adds are in HearthStone wood stove prices 2026.
What matters more is what to ask for. Get the installed price including venting, not the stove price. Chimney or liner, hearth pad, blower and labor commonly add $1,000–$2,500 or more to any premium stove project. Get two quotes before committing — territory pricing means the first one is not necessarily the market rate. Our wood stove installation cost guide breaks those line items down.
For reference, the Drolet models in the same coverage classes are priced openly, with No Sales Tax: $1,549 for the 2,100 sq ft Escape 1800, $1,899 for the 2,700 sq ft HT-3000. That is the gap you are weighing.
Shipping now: the Englander Blue Ridge 300L (No confirmed date) is the closest in-stock freestanding alternative, rated 500–2,100 sq ft.
Shipping now: for HT-3000-class output in a masonry fireplace, the Englander Blue Ridge 500-I insert (No confirmed date) delivers 110,000 BTU/h over 1,000–2,700 sq ft.
Two things to understand before you visit a dealer
"TruHybrid" means there's a catalyst inside. HearthStone's current stoves combine primary and secondary combustion with a tertiary stage that uses a catalytic element. That's how they post emissions figures that low. It also means a consumable component that degrades with use and gets replaced at your cost — check HearthStone's documentation for lifespan and pricing, and see our catalytic vs non-catalytic comparison for what combustor ownership actually involves. Every Drolet we sell is non-catalytic, with nothing in the exhaust path to replace.
Soapstone changes how the stove behaves, not how efficient it is. Thermal mass means slow warm-up and long, gentle heat afterward — fantastic if you burn continuously, less useful if you want the room warm in twenty minutes on a cold evening. It's the same trade-off we lay out in our cast iron vs steel guide, just more so: soapstone is the most extreme thermal-mass material in the hearth business. If that quality of heat is the whole appeal, our masonry heater comparison covers the appliance that takes thermal mass as far as it goes — and what it costs to install one.
One note on comparing efficiency figures across brands: efficiency is published on different bases (HHV, LHV and "optimum"), and the same stove can carry three different numbers. Grams per hour is the only figure measured identically for every EPA-certified stove — our EPA certification guide explains why.
Model matchups
HearthStone Heritage vs Drolet Escape 1800

The Heritage covers about 1,900 sq ft at 60,000 BTU/h, with a side-loading door that's genuinely convenient and soapstone facing throughout. The Escape 1800 ($1,549) covers up to 2,100 sq ft at 75,000 BTU/h with 8-hour burns and factory side heat shields for tight clearances. More output, more coverage, no catalyst — at a fraction of a Heritage dealer quote.
Where the Heritage wins outright is emissions: 0.54 g/h against the Escape 1800's 2.3 g/h is not a close contest. If burning as cleanly as possible is your priority, that is a real reason to pay more.
The split is honest: HearthStone is the better buy when soapstone's slow, even heat release and a 0.54 g/h burn are what you are paying for, and Drolet is the better buy when coverage per dollar decides it. A Drolet Escape 1800 heats 2,100 sq ft for $1,549 and an HT-3000 heats 2,700 sq ft for $1,899 — both published prices you can read before contacting anyone.
HearthStone Mansfield vs Drolet HT-3000 or Escape 2100

The Mansfield is HearthStone's flagship: 2,500 sq ft, a 21½" × 20½" firebox, and 550 lbs of stove, most of it soapstone. Long, even heat is exactly what it's built for.
The HT-3000 ($1,899) and Escape 2100 ($1,929) both cover up to 2,700 sq ft with 110,000 BTU/h from a 3.5 cu ft firebox taking 22" logs, with 10-hour burns and a limited lifetime warranty on the combustion chamber. On peak output and firebox volume the Drolets are simply bigger stoves. On the quality of the heat — slow, radiant, even — the Mansfield does something they don't.
Green Mountain 40 / Bari vs Drolet compacts

For smaller spaces HearthStone offers the Green Mountain 40 and the Bari. Our compact lineup starts at $999 with the Fox and runs to the Deco Nano N ($1,199) — all compared in the small wood stove guide. The price gap in this bracket is the widest of any: against a published $3,499 for the Green Mountain 40, you can buy a Drolet compact, its chimney system, and a hearth pad and still spend less.
The honest scorecard
Buy HearthStone if: you love how soapstone heats and you burn continuously through long winters, the Heritage's 0.54 g/h matters to you or your local air rules, you want a Vermont-built stove with real craft in it, and a dealer relationship plus premium pricing is fine. It's a lovely thing to own and people who have them rarely switch.
Buy Drolet if: you want faster heat from a cold start, maximum firebox and BTUs per dollar, no catalyst to maintain or replace, and a stove ordered today instead of quoted at a showroom.
