Buck Stove vs Drolet: Wood Stoves and Inserts Compared

Buck Stove has been building wood stoves in Spruce Pine, North Carolina since 1975, and they've earned the loyalty they have. The Model 91 is one of the better-known catalytic stoves in the country, and Buck's party trick is real: most of their models install either as a freestanding stove or as a fireplace insert, depending on which kit you order. Almost nobody else does that.

They're also dealer-only, and pricing comes by quote. Here's how the lineup compares to Drolet and Englander, which we ship direct. Every Drolet wood stove is ranked by home size in our Drolet buyer's guide.

Want the Buck stove itself, priced on the page? The Model 21, 74 and 81 are also built as Carolina stoves in the same Spruce Pine factory, and we sell those with No Sales Tax. Our Buck Stove prices guide lists what each Buck model costs at dealers next to its Carolina version.

The Buck lineup

As of August 2026, Buck's wood range runs the Model 21, 74, 81, 91, and the 94NC bay-style stove, plus zero-clearance variants. Figures below come from Buck dealer listings — note that dealers publish noticeably different numbers for the same models, so treat these as approximate and confirm with whoever quotes you:

Model Combustion Coverage (dealer figures) Notes
Model 21 Non-catalytic 800–1,800 sq ft Zone heating; freestanding or insert
Model 74 Non-catalytic ~1,500–2,600 sq ft Dealer listings vary widely on this one
Model 81 Non-catalytic 1,600–2,700 sq ft Variable-speed blower standard
Model 91 Catalytic up to 3,200 sq ft The flagship; 21" logs; freestanding or insert
Model 94NC Non-catalytic Large Bay-style version of the 91

Two things worth knowing before you shop them.

The 91 is catalytic. That's how it posts its long burns and high efficiency, and it means a combustor — a consumable part that degrades with use and gets replaced at your cost. Buck sells the replacement combustor for it, which tells you it's a maintenance item. The other models are non-catalytic and have no equivalent. (Blaze King, Jøtul's V3 stoves, and Lopi's hybrids play the same game — see our Blaze King comparison.)

Availability is worth checking first. At time of writing Buck's own site lists the Model 74 NC and Model 81 NC as unavailable. If you've got your heart set on a specific model, confirm the dealer can actually get one before you plan around it.

Freestanding matchups

Buck Model 21 vs Drolet Escape 1500

The 21 is Buck's zone heater at 800–1,800 sq ft. The Escape 1500 ($1,349) covers up to 1,800 sq ft in the same bracket, ships free, and needs no dealer visit. If you want the smaller end, our small wood stove guide starts at $999.

Shipping now: the Englander Blue Ridge 300L (No confirmed date) is the closest in-stock alternative to the Escape 1500, rated 500–2,100 sq ft on 20" logs, a step up from the Escape 1500's 1,800 sq ft class.

Shipping now: the Englander Blue Ridge 300P (Ships in 5–9 weeks), the pedestal version of the Blue Ridge 300L, covers the same 500–2,100 sq ft on 20" logs.

Buck Model 81 vs Drolet Escape 1800

Drolet Escape 1800 wood stove

The 81's 1,600–2,700 sq ft range with a standard variable-speed blower is a strong package. The Escape 1800 ($1,549) covers up to 2,100 sq ft at 75,000 BTU/h with 8-hour burns and factory side heat shields that let it sit closer to walls. For the top of the 81's range, step up to the Englander Blue Ridge 500 ($1,749) at 1,000–2,700 sq ft — same coverage as the 81, made in the USA like the Buck, no dealer required.

Buck Model 91 vs Drolet HT-3000

Drolet HT-3000 wood stove

The headline fight. The 91 is genuinely impressive — catalytic, up to 3,200 sq ft, 21" logs, long unattended burns. The HT-3000 ($1,899) answers with 110,000 BTU/h, up to 2,700 sq ft, a 3.5 cu ft loading volume that takes 22" logs, 10-hour burns, and a limited lifetime warranty on the combustion chamber — with no combustor to replace, ever.

Straight version: if you're heating 3,000+ sq ft and want the longest possible unattended burn, the 91's catalytic design does something the HT-3000 doesn't, and you should price one. If you're at 2,700 sq ft or below and don't want a consumable in the exhaust path, the Drolet does the job for a fraction of a quoted 91 and arrives this week.

The insert matchups — where it gets interesting

Englander Blue Ridge 500-I wood insert

Buck's dual-purpose design means the 21, 74, 81 and 91 all convert to fireplace inserts with the right kit. That's genuinely clever — and it also means you're buying a stove that was designed to be both, rather than one designed to be an insert.

Purpose-built inserts on our side:

  • Blue Ridge 500-I — $2,219 · 3.5 cu ft · 1,000–2,700 sq ft · 110,000 BTU/h · 22" logs · faceplate and variable-speed blower included
  • Escape 1800-I — $1,799 · up to 2,100 sq ft · 75,000 BTU/h · 8-hour burns · blower included
  • Blue Ridge 150-I — $1,589 · 250–1,200 sq ft · tapered to fit small hearths

The 500-I matches the Model 91's American manufacture and gets close on coverage without the combustor. And because our inserts come with faceplate and blower in the box, the parts list is shorter — with a Buck you're specifying an insert kit or leg kit on top of the stove. Full sizing detail in the wood stove insert guide.

The honest scorecard

Buy Buck if: you want a 50-year American manufacturer with a dealer who services what they sell, the Model 91's catalytic burn times solve a real problem for you, or you specifically want one appliance that can move between freestanding and insert duty later. The reputation is earned — well-maintained Buck stoves run for decades.

Buy Drolet or Englander if: you want the coverage and firebox you're paying for without a dealer quote, no catalyst to service, faceplate and blower included on inserts, and delivery to your driveway this week. Englander is USA-built if that's part of why Buck appealed.

Every stove and insert we sell ships with No Sales Tax in any state and free shipping. Browse wood stoves and inserts, compare the American-built line in our Englander guide, or email info@stovesource.com or text 1-888-866-8206 and we'll size one to your space.
