Wonderwood Wood Stoves: Models, Parts and Modern Replacements

Updated October 2026

If there's a Wonderwood in your basement or living room, you own one of the most common wood heaters ever sold in America. Thousands went out through hardware and farm stores from the 1970s on, and plenty are still burning. This guide covers what a Wonderwood actually is, which model you have, whether it's worth fixing, and which modern stoves replace one. Every stove we sell ships with No Sales Tax in any state.

What a Wonderwood is

The Wonderwood is a wood circulator built by the United States Stove Company of South Pittsburg, Tennessee, the same company that now owns the Ashley name. A circulator is a firebrick-lined steel firebox sitting inside a ventilated sheet-metal cabinet. Room air flows up between the firebox and the cabinet, so most of the heat comes off as warm moving air rather than radiant heat from a hot stove body.

The other signature feature is the thermostat. A bimetal control on the front opens and closes the draft damper by itself, so the stove throttles down as the room warms up. Many units also took a rear blower, the 100 CFM CB36, to push air through the cabinet faster. Model numbers with a "B" prefix generally came with the blower fitted.

Which Wonderwood do you have?

The model number is on the certification label on the back of the cabinet. These are the numbers that show up most in US Stove parts listings:

Model What it is
2600 series Earlier cabinet circulators (2600, 2601, 2607, 2621, 2627 and related numbers)
2941 / B2941 The long-running Wonderwood circulator; B2941 is the blower-equipped version
US2941EB A later version certified to the EPA 2020 emission standard
Wondercoal 2827 The wood-and-coal sister model with a coal grate
Wonderluxe B2350 A related circulator that shares many parts with the 2941

Several of these share parts with Vogelzang and Ashley circulators, which were US Stove brands too. Our Ashley wood stove guide and Vogelzang guide cover those lines.

Is the Wonderwood discontinued?

The original 2941 is listed as discontinued by US Stove parts dealers, and the older 2600-series cabinets are long gone. US Stove did build an EPA 2020 certified version, the US2941EB, after the current emission rules took effect. Availability of that model varies by retailer, so check with US Stove directly if you want a new one.

If yours is a pre-2020 unit, it still burns, but it isn't certified to the current federal standard. That rarely matters while it sits where it is. It tends to matter when you move it, sell the house, or renew insurance. Call your insurer and local building department before you reinstall an older circulator somewhere new.

Fix it or replace it?

Parts are still around. US Stove parts dealers carry firebrick, grates, liners, door latches, draft dampers and the CB36 blower for the 2941 family. A Wonderwood is usually worth repairing when:

  • the firebox is solid, with no cracks, burn-through or warping,
  • the thermostat damper still opens and closes freely, and
  • it heats the space and you're happy with how much wood it uses.

It's time to replace it when the firebox is warped or cracked, the cabinet is rusting through, or you're feeding it constantly. Older circulators have thin fireboxes and send a lot of heat up the chimney, a complaint that comes up again and again among owners on Hearth.com.

What changes with a modern stove

Less wood and less creosote. Today's EPA certified stoves burn the smoke with secondary air tubes instead of letting it go up the chimney. You load less often, and the chimney stays cleaner.

Radiant heat instead of a cabinet. Most modern steel stoves heat by radiation from the stove body. That makes the room warm faster, but radiant stoves need their own clearances to walls and furniture. Never reuse your Wonderwood's spacing; follow the new stove's manual. Our clearances guide explains how to read them.

The blower feel is still available. If you liked the moving air from your Wonderwood's blower, the Drolet variable-speed blower (AC02050) is rated up to 100 CFM, the same class as the old CB36, and it's the optional blower listed in the HT-3000 manual.

Most Wonderwoods heat a main floor or a basement in a typical house, so the Blue Ridge 300L and HT-3000 are the usual matches. The HT-3000 is the closest in spirit: a 3.5 cu ft firebox that takes logs up to 22", up to 10-hour burns per its manual, decorative side panels, and room for that rear blower.

Need heat now? The Blue Ridge 300L covers up to 2,100 sq ft and is the largest stove on this list that's shipping today.

For a smaller space, a cabin or a single room, the Escape 1200 N and Deco Nano N are the compact picks. Not sure which size fits? Our stove sizing calculator works from square footage, climate and insulation.

Budget the whole swap

Replacing a circulator usually means more than the stove. Check that your chimney suits the new stove's 6" flue, and plan for a hearth pad that meets the new stove's floor protection rules. Our wood stove installation cost guide breaks down the parts and labor, and the hearth pad guide covers sizing.

The verdict

If your Wonderwood is sound and you're happy with its wood use, keep it running; parts are still easy to find. If the firebox is tired or you're feeding it all day, a modern EPA stove will heat the same space on noticeably less wood, with a cleaner chimney. Match the replacement to the area you actually heat, not to the old stove's size.
