Morso Wood Stoves vs Drolet: Beautiful, But Check the Size First

Morsø has been casting iron stoves in Denmark since 1853, and they make some of the best-looking appliances in the hearth business. Large unobstructed glass, no bars across the view, clean Scandinavian lines, and genuine cast iron construction throughout.

There is one thing to understand before you fall for the photographs, and it decides most of these purchases: Morsø is a small-stove brand.

The Morsø wood stove range

The US lineup runs the 1410 and 1440 (radiant and convection), the 2B Classic and 2B Standard, 3112 and 3142, the 7110, and the 6140 / 6143 / 6148 pedestal series. Published figures from Morsø dealers:

Model Firebox Coverage Max BTU Max log
1410 B 0.73 cu ft 500–800 sq ft 30,000 12"
2B Standard 2020 0.82 cu ft up to 1,200 sq ft 35,000 18"
7110 — — 38,000 —
6140 series ~0.9 cu ft up to 1,000 sq ft 30,000 12"
3142 ~1.09 cu ft up to 1,400 sq ft 42,000 18"
Largest in range ~1.04 cu ft 1,300 sq ft 45,000 16"

Morsø dealers publish noticeably different figures for the same models — the 1410 appears as both 500–800 sq ft and 1,000 sq ft depending on the source — so treat these as approximate and confirm with whoever quotes you.

Look at the firebox column. The entire Morsø range sits between roughly 0.73 and 1.09 cubic feet, and coverage tops out around 1,400 sq ft. For comparison, the mid-size stove most American buyers end up with is 2.4 cu ft, and a large one is 3.5.

That is not a criticism — it is a design philosophy. Morsø stoves are built for Danish homes, cottages and single well-insulated rooms, and within that brief they are excellent. But if you are trying to heat 2,000 square feet of American house, no stove in this range will do it, and no amount of running one hard will change that.

Two things to check on any Morsø quote

The efficiency figure is usually "optimum." Morsø dealer listings commonly show "Optimum Efficiency — 75+%" across the range, while the 1410's own spec sheet says up to 73%. Those are different measurements of the same stove. Optimum efficiency is measured at the appliance's best operating point rather than across a realistic burn cycle, and it is always the most flattering number available.

This is industry-wide rather than a Morsø problem, but it makes cross-brand comparison misleading. Compare grams per hour instead — it is the only figure measured identically for every EPA-certified stove sold in the US. Our EPA certification guide covers why.

Peak BTU is not sustained output. Credit to Morsø's dealers here, because some of them publish both: the 1410 B is listed at 30,000 BTU peak and 24,733 BTU EPA maximum output. Most brands publish only the larger figure. When you compare a Morsø against another stove, make sure you are comparing like for like — and if the other brand only shows one number, assume it is the peak.

Where the comparison is fair: small spaces

If you are heating a cabin, a single room, or a small well-insulated house, Morsø is competing on level ground and the decision comes down to money and looks.

Shipping now: the Drolet Escape 1200 N (Ships in 6–10 weeks) is the closest in-stock alternative to the Deco Nano N, with the same 250–1,200 sq ft rating and 17" logs.

Shipping now: the Englander Blue Ridge 100 N (Ships in 1–3 days) is the Englander equivalent, rated 250–1,200 sq ft on 17" logs.

The honest read: the Morsø is the more beautiful object and the full cast iron body genuinely heats differently — slower to warm, longer to give it back. If that appeals and the budget allows, it is a lovely thing to own and Morsø owners tend to keep them for decades.

What our compacts offer instead is roughly double the firebox at a price you can see, with a cast iron door for the look and a steel body doing the heating. The cast iron vs steel guide explains why that combination is more common than either extreme, and our small wood stove guide compares the compacts properly.

Where the comparison stops: real houses

Drolet Escape 1800 wood stove on pedestal, side view

Above roughly 1,400 square feet, Morsø has nothing to offer and the comparison ends. The Escape 1800 ($1,549) runs a 2.4 cu ft firebox, 75,000 BTU/h, coverage to 2,100 sq ft and 20-inch logs. The HT-3000 ($1,899) takes that to 3.5 cu ft, 110,000 BTU/h, 2,700 sq ft and 22-inch logs.

Those are three to five times the firebox volume of anything Morsø makes. If you need whole-house heat from one appliance, that is the class of stove you are shopping for.

The 12-inch log problem

Worth its own mention because people discover it after delivery. Several Morsø models take a maximum 12-inch log, while the 2B Standard and 3142 take 18 inches. Standard firewood in most of the US is cut to 16 inches.

That means either paying a premium for short-cut wood, cutting your own to length, or re-splitting every piece before it goes in. If you buy cordwood by the delivery, ask what length your supplier cuts before you commit to a stove with a short firebox. Our stoves take 18 to 22 inches depending on model, which covers standard firewood without adjustment.

Bottom line

Buy a Morsø if: you are heating a small, well-insulated space, you want a genuinely beautiful full cast iron stove with Danish design behind it, you have a dealer nearby, and the premium is comfortable. It is a very good stove within its size class.

Buy a Drolet if: you need to heat more than about 1,400 square feet, you want the most firebox per dollar, you burn standard 16-inch firewood, or you would rather see the price before you pick up the phone.
