Fireplace Insert Cost 2026: What a Wood or Pellet Insert Costs Installed

Updated October 2026

No Sales Tax in any state. On a $2,199 insert bundle at 7%, that is $154 you keep.

A fireplace insert quote usually arrives as one number. That number hides three or four separate costs, and the insert itself is often less than half of it. This guide breaks a wood or pellet insert job into its parts, with real prices for every insert we sell, so you can tell whether a quote is fair or whether doing part of the job yourself makes sense.

The short answer

A wood-burning fireplace insert costs about $1,600 to $2,300 for the insert from a value brand like Drolet or Englander, and roughly $2,500 to $4,500 from dealer-only brands. A pellet insert starts around $2,800. Add a full-height stainless liner ($449 to $559 for the kit), a faceplate if one is not included, and installation. Most wood insert jobs land around $2,500 to $5,500 installed; more if the chimney needs repair.

Pellet insert prices

The ComfortBilt HP22i is $2,799 and heats up to 2,800 sq ft with thermostatic control. It needs the HP22i liner kit ($489), a 3" flexible vent that runs up the existing chimney, for $3,288 in parts. Pellet inserts cost more up front than wood inserts but trade loading logs for filling a hopper. Our pellet stove inserts guide covers what they do differently, and pellet inserts compared sets the HP22i against Harman, Quadra-Fire and Enviro.

The full installed cost, line by line

Item Typical cost
Wood insert $1,589 – $2,219
Stainless liner kit, full height $449 (25 ft) – $559 (35 ft)
Faceplate, if not included $149 – $189
Chimney sweep and inspection first Commonly $150 – $400
Professional installation with reline Commonly $1,000 – $2,500
Chimney or firebox repairs Only if the inspection finds them

The liner is not optional. A modern insert needs a stainless liner running from its 6" collar to the top of the chimney. Old masonry flues are far too big for an insert, which kills draft and builds creosote. Both liner kits include the rain cap and top plate. Our chimney liner guide covers sizing and insulation.

The faceplate covers the gap between the insert and the masonry. The Englander inserts and the Escape 1500-I include one, and the Century CW2100 bundles add one. The Escape 1800-I takes a 29" × 44" faceplate ($169) or a 32" × 50" faceplate ($189). Fitment is in our faceplate and trim kit guide.

Where the money goes in a quote. A $6,000 to $10,000 installed quote usually means a premium dealer insert, a custom surround, or chimney repair. Ask for the insert, liner, surround and labor priced separately. That is the only way to compare it with buying the insert and liner online and hiring a sweep for the install.

DIY or pro?

Sliding the insert in is the easy part; the liner is the work. A straight chimney reline is a realistic two-person job: feed the liner down from the roof, connect it at the bottom, cap it at the top. Offsets, a damaged flue, or a chimney nobody has inspected in years are jobs for a sweep. Check your local permit rules either way; many areas require one for an insert.

Gas and electric inserts

We do not sell gas or electric inserts. Electric units are the cheapest to install because they need no venting but they do not heat much; vented gas inserts need a liner plus a gas line, and industry cost guides commonly put them around $2,300 to $8,000 installed. If you burn wood or pellets, the numbers above apply.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a wood burning fireplace insert cost?

The insert itself runs about $1,600 to $2,300 from value brands and $2,500 to $4,500 from dealer brands. Installed with a stainless liner, most jobs come to about $2,500 to $5,500.

How much does a pellet stove insert cost?

The ComfortBilt HP22i is $2,799, plus $489 for its required liner kit, before installation.

Is a fireplace insert worth it?

If you have a working masonry fireplace and want real heat from it, usually yes. An open fireplace pulls warm room air up the chimney; a sealed, certified insert turns it into a heater. If you have no fireplace, a freestanding stove is usually cheaper. See wood stove vs fireplace insert.
