Pellet Fireplace Inserts Compared 2026: Harman, Quadra-Fire & Enviro vs ComfortBilt

Search for a Harman pellet stove insert and you land in a dealer-only world: quoted prices, a showroom visit, and a number at the end that usually starts with a 5. Harman, Quadra-Fire and Enviro build the three pellet inserts most often recommended, and all three are genuinely good appliances. They are also roughly twice the price of the pellet insert we sell.
This is an honest look at what that premium buys and where the ComfortBilt HP22i makes more sense. Freestanding stoves are a separate argument — that one lives in our Harman vs ComfortBilt guide. This page is inserts only: units that slide into an existing masonry or approved factory-built fireplace and vent through a liner.

Dealer pricing below is what these units publicly list for in the US as of September 2026. Harman and Quadra-Fire are sold through hearth dealers, so your local quote will vary — and installation is usually extra on top.

What Harman genuinely does better
Three things, and none of them are marketing.
The feed and sensing system. Harman's exhaust-sensing probe reads flue temperature and modulates the auger continuously, which is why owners describe the stove holding a room within about a degree of setpoint rather than cycling between too hot and too cold. Paired with the PelletPro feed, it also means Harman is more forgiving of low-grade, high-ash pellets than most of the market. If you buy whatever pellets the co-op has that week, that tolerance is worth something real.
Serviceability on the Accentra52i. It sits on a track and slides forward out of the fireplace for cleaning without disconnecting the venting. Every other insert here, ours included, has to be pulled properly for a full chimney service.
The dealer network. A Harman dealer will come to your house, diagnose the fault, and carry the part on the truck. If you do not want to own the maintenance on a pellet appliance — and pellet stoves need more of it than wood stoves do — that relationship is a legitimate reason to pay dealer pricing. We ship a stove to your curb; we cannot send a technician.
Where Quadra-Fire wins
Shallow fireplaces. This is the practical one. The Santa Fe and Castile inserts are built to sit further back with a shallower body, and Quadra-Fire's flush-face styling on the Trekker is designed to finish tight against the masonry rather than projecting into the room. If you measure your firebox and find the depth is marginal, a Quadra-Fire may physically fit where a deeper insert will not. Measure before you shop anything, ours included — width, height, and depth at both the front and the back of the opening, because masonry fireplaces taper.
Quadra-Fire also runs automatic ignition and multi-stage combustion across the range, and the Classic Bay's traditional cast styling is closer to what some period fireplaces want than a modern bay window.

Enviro, and the price you cannot see
The Enviro M55 cast-iron insert consistently gets named alongside Harman and Quadra-Fire in owner forums for heat distribution and classic looks, and the cast-iron body is a genuinely different feel from a steel firebox. It is also the most opaque of the three: Enviro does not publish insert pricing and dealers quote per install, so there is no honest number to put in a table. That opacity is the point — you cannot compare what you cannot see until you are sitting in a showroom.
Price per BTU
Rated output is the only spec that maps cleanly across brands, so it is the fairest way to compare the appliance itself. Using each unit's published maximum:

Within about 1,300 BTU/h of each other, the Harman inserts cost roughly twice as much per unit of heat. That gap is not buying you output. It is buying the control system, the dealer relationship, and the badge.
Total installed cost is the number that matters
Every pellet insert needs a liner. Old masonry flues are far too large for a 3" pellet appliance, and rigid pipe means the insert can never be pulled for service — so a flexible liner is the right call regardless of brand.

Labour is the wildcard on both sides. If you hire a sweep to run the liner and set the insert, add that to either column — it is the same job either way. What does not change is that you start about $2,400 further ahead, before tax, and you keep that difference whatever you do with it.
Where the HP22i gives ground
Stated plainly, because these matter:
- Warranty. ComfortBilt covers online purchases for one year on electrical components, burn pot and labour, with steel parts covered up to five years per the manual. Buy a Harman from a dealer and you get longer coverage plus someone local who owns the problem.
- No local technician. Support is by phone and email. You or a sweep you hire will do the annual service.
- Control sophistication. Five power levels, Temp mode with ECO, weekly scheduling and wired-thermostat support cover almost everything people actually use — but it is not Harman's degree-accurate exhaust-sensing modulation, and pretending otherwise would be dishonest.
- Pellet quality. Any pellet appliance runs better on low-ash premium fuel. Harman tolerates worse fuel than most; plan on buying decent pellets with any other brand.
What the HP22i brings
The HP22i is the HP22's engine in insert form: 80.5% HHV efficiency, EPA-certified at 1.01 g/hr — the cleanest burn ComfortBilt makes — and coverage up to 2,800 sq ft in mild conditions. A 47 lb hopper runs up to about 18 hours on the lowest of five settings. Convection blower, automatic ignition and remote are included, as is the 43" × 32" surround panel that finishes the opening. It is certified for mobile home installation with an outside air connection.
Which one to buy
- You want a technician on call and degree-accurate temperature: buy the Harman from a local dealer. That is what the premium is for.
- Your fireplace is shallow or awkward: measure first, then talk to a Quadra-Fire dealer — fitment beats every other consideration.
- You burn whatever pellets are cheapest: Harman's fuel tolerance is a real advantage.
- You want the same heat for about half the appliance cost and you are comfortable owning the maintenance: the ComfortBilt HP22i with the flexible liner kit.
