The Ventis HEI90 wood insert (VB00024) is a compact fireplace insert built by SBI, the Quebec manufacturer behind Drolet and Englander. It is made for smaller masonry fireplaces: the tapered top and sides need an opening of just 25" wide, 19" high and 15 1/2" deep. Ventis rates it for 250 to 1,500 sq ft with up to 45,000 BTU/h, 17" logs and burns of up to 7 hours. It is EPA 2020 certified at 1.5 g/h. This listing includes the required 26" x 42" faceplate (VBA1545), and the 90 CFM blower is built in.

The HEI90 is for masonry fireplaces. Measure the opening at the front:

Same platform as the Blue Ridge 150-I

The HEI90 shares its firebox, output, log length, emissions and blower with the Englander Blue Ridge 150-I and the Century CW2100, and needs the same 25" x 19" x 15 1/2" opening. If your fireplace is bigger and you want more heat, the Carolina Model 21 NC fireplace insert heats 800 to 1,800 sq ft but needs an opening at least 23 1/4" wide, 21" high and 15" deep.

Chimney liner and installation

The HEI90 vents through a 6" stainless steel liner (UL 1777) that runs from the insert to the top of the chimney, at least 12 ft tall. Our 25 ft 6" insert liner kit (VOLKI-625) and 35 ft kit (VOLKI-635) include the liner, top plate, insert connector and cap. Keep 16" between the insert and a combustible side wall, 34" from the top of the unit to a combustible mantel up to 12" deep, and 72" from the base of the unit to the ceiling. Floor protection

In the USA, non-combustible floor protection must extend 16" in front of the door opening and 8" to each side; your existing hearth extension counts toward it. If the hearth is raised less than 5" above the floor, the protection in front needs an R-value of at least 1.00 and must extend 23" in front of the unit. Our hearth pads can extend a short hearth.

5" fresh air intake kit for inserts (AC01298), listed in the HEI90 manual, with 4' insulated flex pipe (AC02090).
Firescreen door (AC01213). In the US, EPA rules prohibit burning with the door open behind a screen.

Will the Ventis HEI90 fit my fireplace?

The HEI90 is made for smaller masonry fireplaces. The opening needs to be at least 25" wide, 19" high and 15 1/2" deep (add at least 4" of width if you plan to connect a fresh air kit). The included 26" x 42" faceplate covers the gap around the insert. Send us your front width, rear width, height and depth and we'll confirm it fits before you order.

What size space does the HEI90 heat?

Ventis rates it for 250 to 1,500 sq ft with up to 45,000 BTU/h from dry cordwood. In practice it's a strong heater for the room it sits in and the spaces open to it. For a larger or open-plan home, a bigger insert will hold more wood and burn longer.

Is the faceplate included?

Yes. The HEI90 needs its 26" x 42" faceplate (VBA1545), and this listing includes it with the insert. The 90 CFM blower with thermodisc is built in. The stainless chimney liner is sold separately.

Do I need a chimney liner?

Yes. The HEI90 vents through a 6" stainless steel liner (UL 1777) that runs from the insert to the top of the chimney, at least 12 ft tall. Our 25 ft and 35 ft 6" insert liner kits include the liner, top plate, connector and cap. Measure from the fireplace floor to the top of the chimney to pick the length.

Can it go in a mobile home or a factory-built fireplace?

The owner's manual says the HEI90 is not approved for mobile homes or alcove installation, and it is written for masonry fireplaces. If you have a factory-built (zero-clearance) fireplace, contact us before ordering.
