Kuma Wood Stoves vs Drolet: What Idaho Builds, and What It Costs
Kuma Stoves is one of the last genuinely small American stove manufacturers still building at scale. The company started in Rathdrum, Idaho in 1981, when Mark Freeman — now the president — welded the first Kuma stove on the tailgate of his pickup. It is still primarily a family operation, everything is made in the USA from US-sourced materials, and the Sequoia sold today is essentially that original design with EPA certification added.
If you have found your way to Kuma, you probably care about that. This comparison is not going to pretend the brand is anything other than good.
The Kuma lineup
The current range is built around the LE-1 low-emission line: the Aspen LE-1, Tamarack LE-1, Aberdeen LE-1, Ashwood LE-1, Wood Classic LE-1 and Cambridge LE-1. Dealers describe the line as covering roughly 1,800 to 2,800 sq ft depending on model.

They also build wood inserts, oil stoves (since 1999), and — unusually — a line of roof snow dividers to protect chimneys and vents from sliding snow.
What Kuma genuinely does better
American manufacturing, and they mean it. Not assembled in the USA — built in Idaho from US-sourced materials by a family company that has been at it since 1981. If that matters to you, Kuma is one of the few brands that can make the claim without qualification. Drolet is built in Quebec.
Configurability. Kuma stoves are ordered with door finishes, leg and base styles, pedestal-with-ash-pan options, blowers and trim. You can specify a stove to suit a room in a way you cannot with our range, where what you see is what ships.
Their satisfaction guarantee is unusually strong. Buy direct from Kuma and if you are not happy with the quality and appearance on arrival, they arrange and pay for return shipping and refund 100%, including the original shipping. Very few appliance manufacturers will write that down.
Efficiency. The Sequoia's claim to the highest tested efficiency in North America is Kuma's own, and it is the kind of claim a small manufacturer does not make casually.
Where the comparison gets practical
Firebox size. The Ashwood LE-1, Kuma's mid-large stove, runs a 2.5 cu ft firebox. The Drolet HT-3000 and Escape 2100 both run 3.5 cu ft on 22-inch logs. That is a full cubic foot more fuel per load, which is the most direct route there is to fewer trips to the woodpile.
Buying process and price. Kuma sells through more than 200 dealers and also direct from their own site. Neither route puts a delivered price in front of you before you start a conversation, and the configurable options mean the number moves. Reach. Kuma's dealer network is concentrated in the Northwest and Mountain West — Idaho, Washington, Oregon, Montana, Wyoming, Colorado — with scattered coverage elsewhere. If you are in that footprint, a local Kuma dealer is a real advantage. If you are in the Southeast or Northeast, you are likely buying direct anyway, at which point the dealer-service argument for paying more largely disappears.

One thing to ignore while you research
Several Kuma dealer pages still advertise that the LE-1 series qualifies for a 30% federal tax credit “through 2032.” That is out of date, and it is not specific to Kuma — pages across the whole industry still carry it. The federal 25C biomass tax credit expired December 31, 2025. There is no federal credit on a stove installed in 2026, from any manufacturer or any retailer. Some state and local change-out programs still exist; check your state air quality agency.

Bottom line
Buy the Kuma if American manufacturing is a real purchase criterion for you, you want a stove configured to your room, you live inside their dealer footprint, or the Sequoia's efficiency claim is what you are after. It is a well-built stove from a company that has been doing this for forty-odd years, and nobody who owns one seems to regret it.
Buy the Drolet if you want the largest firebox per dollar, a price you can see before you commit, and a stove that ships this week rather than after a configuration conversation. On raw capacity the HT-3000 and Escape 2100 carry a full cubic foot more firebox than Kuma's mid-large models, at a price most Kuma configurations will not match.
