Overview
VenTubes are small stainless steel tubes that give a masonry chimney cross ventilation. In chimneys with a large cavity around the flue liner, moisture condenses on the inside of the outer walls and causes efflorescence, spalling and freeze/thaw damage. Saver Systems says VenTubes can eliminate up to 85% of the moisture that damages these chimneys. Buy from StoveSource and pay no sales tax in any state.
How many you need
- Cavity less than 16": generally 4 VenTubes, two in each narrow side of the chimney, 4 to 6 courses down and about one brick length apart.
- Cavity greater than 16": generally 8 VenTubes, four in each long side, 4 to 6 courses down from the top, two on each side of the flue liner.
How to install
Drill a 1/2" hole into a mortar joint, angled slightly upward to keep out blowing rain. Push the tube in until the screen is flush with the brick, then seal it with a small bead of clear silicone caulk.
Do not install in chimneys with damaged, cracked or misaligned flue liners, or below the roof line or other combustible exposures.
