What Size Wood Stove Do I Need?
As a starting point, most homes need 25–55 BTU per square foot of heating output — the low end for mild Southern climates, the high end for cold Northern winters. Insulation quality and ceiling height shift that number further. The calculator above applies all three factors and gives you a personalized BTU target matched to stoves we actually carry.

How BTU sizing works
A stove's heat output is measured in BTU per hour (BTU/h). The right BTU number for your home depends on three things:
- Climate zone: A mild Southern climate needs roughly 25 BTU/sq ft. A cold Northern or Canadian climate needs 45–55 BTU/sq ft because the stove has to overcome greater heat loss through walls, windows, and the roof on frigid nights.
- Insulation: A well-insulated modern home (double-pane windows, proper wall insulation) retains heat better, so you can size slightly smaller. A drafty older home needs 15–20% more output to compensate for heat loss.
- Ceiling height: Taller rooms hold more air volume. A vaulted ceiling can add 25% or more to the effective BTU requirement even for the same floor area.

Don't oversize your stove
Bigger is not better with wood stoves. An oversized stove runs at a fraction of its capacity most of the time, which means low draft, incomplete combustion, and creosote buildup in the flue — a chimney fire hazard. It also wastes fuel. Right-sizing lets you run the stove near its optimal burn rate: cleaner combustion, better efficiency, and longer stove life.

What size wood stove do I need?
Start with your square footage and climate zone. A cold-climate home needs about 45 BTU per square foot; a mild-climate home needs around 25 BTU per square foot. How many BTU do I need to heat X square feet?
Multiply your square footage by your climate BTU factor: 25 for mild, 35 for moderate, 45 for cold, or 55 for very cold climates. A 1,500 sq ft home in a cold climate needs roughly 1,500 × 45 = 67,500 BTU/h as a baseline — then adjust for insulation and ceiling height using the calculator above.
Is it bad to oversize a wood stove?
Yes. An oversized stove runs at a damped-down, low-burn setting most of the time, producing incomplete combustion, excessive creosote buildup in the flue, and more smoke. Creosote buildup is a leading cause of chimney fires. Right-sizing is a safety and efficiency issue, not just a preference.
Does climate affect what size stove I need?
Yes, significantly. A mild Southern climate (AZ, FL, southern TX) needs about 25 BTU per square foot. A very cold climate (MN, AK, Canadian prairies) needs 55 BTU per square foot — more than twice as much — because far more heat is lost through walls, windows, and the roof on frigid nights.
