Hearth Pad Size Calculator: What Size Hearth Pad Do I Need?
No Sales Tax in any state. Pick your stove and this tool gives you the minimum hearth pad size from its owner's manual, whether it needs an R-value, and every pad we sell that fits, cheapest first. It covers 121 stoves: 76 wood and 45 pellet, from Drolet, Englander and ComfortBilt to most popular US brands. If yours is not listed, enter its size.
Enter the numbers from your stove's manual (floor protection section). Measure the stove body, not including the flue collar. Quick fill: typical wood stove (16" front, 8" sides) · typical pellet stove (6" front and sides)
How the finder works
Every stove manual has a floor protection section. It says either that ember protection is enough, or that the pad must have a minimum R-value. It then gives a finished pad size, or offsets to add to the stove's footprint: usually 16" in front and 8" at each side for a wood stove, and 6" in front and at the sides for a pellet stove. The finder uses the manual's printed size where there is one. Where there isn't, it adds the offsets to the stove body, measuring the front from the stove's front face, which is slightly more than most manuals require.
It then checks each pad we sell in both orientations, drops any pad without the R-value your stove needs, and drops any Drolet pad whose own rating is smaller than your stove. These are USA figures. Canadian requirements are larger.

The short answers
- Most Drolet and Englander wood stoves fit the Drolet 41¼" × 44" black steel pad at $189. The Escape 1800, Escape 2100 and HT-3000 need the 46¾" × 54" pad ($285).
- Most pellet stoves fit a 36" pad or the Hy-C 32" × 42" Type 2 board ($229.99) set with its long side along the wall.
- If your manual asks for an R-value, use a Type 2 board such as the Hy-C (R-1.56). Steel and glass ember pads have no R-value.

Common questions
What size hearth pad do I need? Your stove's footprint plus the manual's offsets, usually 16" in front and 8" each side for a wood stove, or 6" front and sides for a pellet stove. The finder above does the arithmetic for 121 stoves.
Does the pad go under the whole stove? Yes. The pad runs under the stove and out past it on the front and sides. Some pellet stove manuals also ask for 2" past the rear clean-out tee.
Is a bigger pad a problem? No. A bigger pad only costs more. A pad smaller than the manual's size fails inspection.
What about a concrete floor? A non-combustible floor such as a concrete slab needs no pad under most manuals. Check yours.
