Pellet stove cleaning supplies: what you need

A pellet stove burns cleanly, but it still leaves fine fly ash in the burn pot, the exhaust passages and the vent pipe. Left alone, that ash blocks airflow, causes failed ignitions and vacuum errors, and eventually shuts the stove down. The table below matches each job to the tool for it. The intervals are a general guide: ComfortBilt's owner's manual, for example, calls for cleaning the rear exhaust chambers every ton of pellets and the vent once a year, but your own stove's manual has the final word. For the complete routine, read our pellet stove maintenance schedule.

Pellet stove cleaning FAQs

How often should I clean a pellet stove?

Empty the burn pot and ash regularly during the season, give the exhaust passages a deeper clean every ton or so of pellets, and brush the vent at least once a year. Lower-quality, high-ash pellets shorten every interval. Our pellet stove maintenance guide lays out the daily, weekly and annual jobs.

What size vent brush do I need?

Match the brush to the inside diameter of your pellet vent pipe, which is 3" or 4". Most ComfortBilt and Alpine stoves run on 3" vent; longer runs and high altitude often use 4". If you're not sure, check the size printed on the pipe or the adapter at the back of the stove. For 4" vent you can also use the A.W. Perkins pellet vent brush on flexible 1/4"-20 rods.

Can I use a shop vac on pellet stove ash?

We don't recommend it. Pellet ash is fine enough to pass through a shop vac filter and into the motor, and a hidden ember can start a fire inside a plastic canister. An ash vacuum has a metal canister and fine filtration built for the job. Our guide to why a shop vac is the wrong tool for ash explains the difference.

Is there one kit with everything for a ComfortBilt?

Yes. The pellet stove cleaning kit for ComfortBilt and Alpine stoves includes the B67C 3" vent and burn pot brush kit, the exhaust port brush 2-pack, the right Lytherm gasket kit for your model, Mill-Pac high-temp sealant and spare fuses, priced below the parts bought separately. Like everything at StoveSource, it ships with No Sales Tax.
