Vermont Castings Defiant: Price, Specs and an Honest Alternative
Share
Updated October 2026
The Vermont Castings Defiant is the flagship of America's best-known cast iron stove line. The original Defiant parlor stove from the 1970s is in the Smithsonian, and the current model is a 518 lb, top-loading catalytic stove that dealers list at roughly $4,700 in matte black and $5,100 or more in enamel colors. This review covers what the Defiant does better than anything else, what it costs to own, and when a stove at well under half the price does the same heating job. Every stove we sell ships with No Sales Tax in any state.
What the Defiant does well
No hedging: the Defiant is a superb stove, and it wins on several points nothing at our prices matches.
- Burn time. Up to 14 hours in catalytic mode from a 3.2 cu ft firebox, longer than any non-catalytic stove of similar size.
- Top loading. You drop logs in from above, which is easier on your back and keeps smoke and embers inside.
- Cast iron and enamel. Full cast iron construction and enamel color options like Bordeaux, Majolica Brown and Twilight. It's furniture as much as a heater.
- Thermostatic control and a swing-out ash pan that you can empty while the stove is hot.
Vermont Castings rates it for roughly 1,300 to 2,800 sq ft and 20" logs.
What it costs to own
The price is stove-only. Most Defiants are sold through showroom dealers, and delivery, venting and installation are quoted on top, so an installed Defiant runs well past $5,000 in most markets.
The catalytic combustor is a consumable. The long burns come from a catalytic combustor that wears over years of use and has to be replaced. The Defiant's FlexBurn system can run with or without it, but you lose the long burn times without one. Our catalytic vs non-catalytic guide covers combustor life and how to tell when one has failed.
Weight. At 518 lb, getting a Defiant into the room is a job for several people or an installer.
Defiant vs Drolet HT-3000
The Drolet HT-3000 is the Drolet built for the same size house. Here's how they compare on published specs (the HT-3000 figures are from its owner's manual):

| Spec | Vermont Castings Defiant | Drolet HT-3000 |
|---|---|---|
| Heating area | About 1,300–2,800 sq ft | 1,000–2,700 sq ft |
| Firebox | 3.2 cu ft | 3.5 cu ft |
| Max log length | 20" | 22" |
| Max burn time | Up to 14 hours (catalytic) | 10 hours |
| Combustion | Catalytic (FlexBurn) | Non-catalytic, nothing to replace |
| Construction | Cast iron | Steel, cast iron door frame |
| Loading | Top and front | Front |
| Mobile home approved | Check with dealer | Yes, with fresh air kit |
| Price | About $4,700–$5,100+ | $1,899 |
Where the Defiant wins: burn time, top loading, cast iron looks and enamel colors. If you want to load once before bed and wake to a warm house, its catalytic burn is hard to beat.
Where the HT-3000 wins: a bigger firebox that takes longer logs, no combustor to replace, approval for alcove and mobile home installs, and a price that leaves about $2,800 for your chimney, hearth pad and several winters of firewood.
The HT-3000 is on backorder right now (Ships in about 2 weeks).
Need heat sooner? The Englander Blue Ridge 300L (No confirmed date, $1,419) is shipping now. It's rated 500–2,100 sq ft, so it suits the smaller end of the Defiant's range.

The other big Drolet
The Drolet Escape 2100 ($1,929, No confirmed date) is Drolet's other large-firebox stove, with a more contemporary look than the HT-3000. If you're weighing the whole Drolet range, our ranking of every Drolet model compares them side by side.

Replacing an older Defiant?
Vermont Castings stoves from the 1970s through the 1990s often need a full rebuild by now: gaskets, refractory, and on catalytic models, the combustor. A rebuild is worth it when the castings are uncracked and you love the stove. If the castings are cracked or warped, replacement usually makes more sense. Our Vigilant and Resolute guide covers the same repair-or-replace call for the Defiant's sister models.
The verdict
Buy the Defiant if the stove is the centerpiece of the room and you value top loading and overnight catalytic burns enough to pay about $2,800 more, plus combustor replacements down the road. Buy the HT-3000 if the job is heating the house: same size class, a bigger firebox, no combustor, and the savings cover most of a chimney.
