Englander Grizzly Camp Stove (ESW0030)

The Englander Grizzly camp stove (model ESW0030) is a portable wood-burning tent stove and cooktop from Englander's USA-made Survivor Collection. It heats canvas wall tents up to 16' x 24', holds 2.5 cu ft of wood with logs up to 19", and its top reaches 800°F for real cooking. Welded heavy-duty 12-gauge steel, a HexaTech hexagonal firebox, a circular door damper and an offset 4" flue outlet that frees up cooking space. The legs come off and store inside the stove body for transport.

Who the Grizzly is for

In a tent of 14' x 16' or smaller, the Grizzly will run you out the door, and damping it down makes a smoky, creosote-heavy burn; the Black Bear is the better fit there.

Buy the kit or the bare stove

The stove ships without pipe. The Englander Grizzly Camp Stove Kit (ESW0031) adds the attachable 4" pipe collar, four 2' sections of 4" pipe and an attachable side shelf, and costs less than buying those parts separately. Building your own setup instead? You need the 4" pipe collar (AC03522) and the 4" x 24" camp stove pipe set (AC03521) (8 ft total). Add the large side shelf (AC09207), the 26" long leg kit (VP00493) for a taller cooking height, and the Brick Kit, large (AC09206), sized for the Grizzly firebox. The stove does not come with firebrick, and the manual recommends firebrick or a BottomSaver steel insert to prolong the life of the firebox.

All three use the same 4" pipe, 12-gauge steel and removable legs. Englander rates them by wall tent size rather than BTUs or burn time, and does not publish a burn-time figure.

Setting it up safely in a tent

• Use it only in a tent made for a stove (a canvas wall tent with a stove jack), never in a nylon tent. Pass the pipe through a rubber military-style stove jack, in both the tent and any rain fly.
• Keep 48" from the back wall, side walls and corners, and 60" from the cooking surface to the ceiling.
• Set the stove on a non-combustible surface, never on the tent floor. In the USA, protection must extend 16" in front and 6" to the sides and rear.
• Run the 4" pipe at least 6" above the tent ridge, fasten each joint with three sheet metal screws, and add a spark arrestor and rain cap. A pipe damper near the stove is recommended.
• Cure the paint with a 2 to 3 hour fire outdoors before the first use in a tent, and always leave a window or door cracked for fresh air. A carbon monoxide detector is strongly recommended.
