The ComfortBilt GAP2020 is a gravity-fed pellet stove built by Independent Stove LLC in Grants Pass, Oregon, and sold through ComfortBilt. Pellets drop from an 88 lb hopper into the burner by gravity, and a fuel-feed lever sets how fast they burn, so the stove needs no electricity at all. It is EPA 2020 certified at 0.84 g/h, listed to UL 1482 and ULC S627, and approved for mobile homes. ComfortBilt rates it to heat over 2,000 sq ft; in the manual's burn tests it put out 8,026 to 23,002 BTU/h.

Who the GAP2020 is for

  • Homes in areas with long or frequent power outages that want pellet heat which does not depend on the grid or a generator.
  • Off-grid cabins, hunting camps and workshops with no reliable power.
  • Anyone who wants a stove they can also cook on: the flat top is 32" wide and sits 20" off the floor.

If you have steady power and want thermostat control, auto-ignition and a room blower, look at an electric pellet stove like the ComfortBilt HP22 instead. The GAP2020 trades those conveniences for independence from electricity.

Hopper and burn time

The 88 lb hopper holds two 40 lb bags. At the manual's tested burn rates (1.9 lb/h on low, 4.8 lb/h on high), a full hopper lasts roughly 18 to 46 hours. Use dry, 1/4" wood pellets only; PFI-listed pellets are recommended.

Venting: not a pellet-vent stove

This is the most important install detail. The manual says never use pellet vent with the GAP2020. It vents like a small wood stove:

  • Connect the 4" flue with minimum 24-gauge single-wall black stove pipe, at least 3 screws per joint.
  • Run the connector into a listed UL 103 HT Class A chimney (the stove label allows 5" to 8" chimneys with an increaser), or into a masonry chimney; add a 4" stainless liner if draft is poor.
  • The chimney must rise at least 2 ft above any part of the roof within 10 ft.
  • The connector cannot pass through an attic, closet, floor or ceiling, and the chimney cannot serve another appliance.

For a 6" Class A run, our AllFuel HST 6" through-the-ceiling Class A chimney kit and AllFuel HST 6" through-the-wall Class A chimney kit are UL 103 HT listed. You will also need a 4" single-wall connector and a 4"-to-6" increaser, which we do not stock. Call us and we will help you plan the run.

Clearances and floor protection

The manual's freestanding clearances assume the 10" pedestal and rear heat shield accessory kit. ComfortBilt lists the stove at 38" tall, which matches the version without the pedestal, so call us to confirm what ships before you plan a freestanding install.

  • Rear-wall install: 6" from the glass-door (left) side, 2" from the hopper (right) side, 2" behind the heat shield.
  • Corner install: 6" from the stove corner to each wall.
  • Ember protection: 16" in front (USA), 8" each side and 4" behind, using a non-combustible floor protector rated UL 1618 Type 1 or better. The manual sets the US hearth at 50" wide by 32" deep; our Drolet 54" x 46¾" tinted glass hearth pad covers that area.
  • Never install in a bedroom or room used for sleeping.
  • Mobile homes: outside air connection, stove bolted to the floor and grounded to the frame with #10 wire.

Full details are in the owner's manual under Documents on this page.

Frequently asked questions

No. The GAP2020 is a gravity-fed pellet stove: pellets drop from the hopper into the burner, and you set the burn rate with a fuel-feed lever instead of a control board. There is no power cord, so it keeps heating through a power outage or in a cabin with no grid power.
No. The manual says never to use pellet vent with this stove. Connect the 4" flue with minimum 24-gauge single-wall black stove pipe to a listed UL 103 HT Class A chimney (5" to 8" with an increaser), or use a 4" stainless liner in a masonry chimney if draft is poor. The chimney must extend at least 2 ft above anything within 10 ft.
In the manual's burn tests the stove used 1.9 lb/h on low and 4.8 lb/h on high. At those rates a full 88 lb hopper lasts roughly 18 hours on high and about 46 hours on low. Real burn times depend on your setting, chimney draft and pellet quality.
Yes. The manual allows mobile home installation when the stove has a direct outside air connection, is bolted to the floor and is grounded to the frame with #10 wire. Like any wood or pellet heater, it cannot go in a bedroom or any room used for sleeping.
Yes. The flat top is 32" wide and sits 20" off the floor, and the manufacturer markets it for cooking and keeping food warm. The surface can get above 1,000°F on the highest setting, so use cookware made for wood stove tops.
It is built by Independent Stove LLC in Grants Pass, Oregon, and sold through ComfortBilt. For the original purchaser the warranty covers the stove body, hopper, heat shield and pedestal for 5 years, the burn chamber for 3 years, the stainless burn pot, log set, hardware and glass (thermal breakage) for 2 years, and the gasket for 1 year. Paint is not covered.
