Overview

A traditional-style steel gas stove that needs no chimney and heats right through a power outage.

The Buck Stove Townsend II is a vent-free gas stove made in the USA by New Buck Corporation in Spruce Pine, North Carolina. It burns natural gas or liquid propane at up to 32,000 Btu/h (22,400 Btu/h minimum), lights with a piezo igniter and runs on a standing pilot, so it heats without electricity. A built-in oxygen depletion sensor shuts the stove off if the room's fresh air runs low. ComfortBilt lists it as approved for mobile and manufactured homes.

Who the Townsend II is for

  • Homes that want supplemental heat in a living room, den, cabin or basement without running a chimney or vent pipe.
  • Buyers who like a traditional stove look with a visible log fire.
  • Anyone who wants heat that does not depend on the power grid. Only the optional blower needs an outlet.

Choose fuel and blower

The stove is built for one fuel at the factory; the manual says it is not convertible to another gas, so order the version that matches your supply. The With Blower option adds the MA CVF714 blower kit, the only blower Buck approves for the Townsend II.

SKU Fuel Blower Price
TS2NG Natural gas No $1,899
TS2NGB Natural gas Yes $2,268 (currently unavailable)
TS2LP Liquid propane No $1,899
TS2LPB Liquid propane Yes $2,268

Propane installs need an external regulator that limits tank pressure to 13" W.C. The gas inlet is 3/8" NPT at the lower rear right; run 1/2" or larger supply pipe and use a qualified gas installer. Finish: the Townsend II is made in several colors and ComfortBilt does not offer a finish choice on this listing, so call us to confirm the finish before you order.

  • 4" from side walls and the back wall (measured from the outermost point of the stove top), 48" to the ceiling.
  • Keep curtains, furniture and clothing at least 48" from the front, top and sides, and keep the stove out of drafts and high-traffic areas.
  • Set it on a metal or wood panel covering its full width and depth, never directly on carpet or vinyl.
  • The room needs at least 50 cubic feet per 1,000 Btu/h (1,600 cu ft at full input), or extra fresh air.

Check your local code before you buy

  • California: unvented fuel-burning room heaters are not permitted in homes.
  • Minnesota: the state fuel gas code bars unvented room heaters in any dwelling.
  • Elsewhere: under the International Fuel Gas Code, a vent-free heater cannot be your home's only heat source. Some cities and counties restrict them further or require a permit and inspection.
  • Manufacturer limits: never in a bedroom, bathroom or RV. Above 4,500 ft the pilot may go out.

Call your local building or fire department to confirm before you order.

See the owner's manual under Documents on this page for full instructions. Want a stove that can also go inside a fireplace, with the blower included? See the Buck Stove Model T-33, or compare both on our vent-free gas stoves page.

Frequently asked questions

It depends on your state and town. California does not allow unvented fuel-burning room heaters in homes, and Minnesota's fuel gas code bars them in any dwelling. Where the International Fuel Gas Code applies, an unvented heater cannot be the only heat source in a home, must have an oxygen depletion sensor and cannot exceed 40,000 Btu/h. Some cities require a permit and inspection. The manufacturer also prohibits installation in bedrooms, bathrooms and RVs. Check with your local building or fire department before you buy.
No. The manufacturer's manual says the stove is not convertible for use with other gases, and field conversion is not permitted. Order the version that matches your supply: natural gas or liquid propane. Propane installs also need an external regulator that drops tank pressure to no more than 13" W.C.
Buck Stove does not publish a square-footage rating. The manual sizes by room volume instead: the space needs at least 50 cubic feet per 1,000 Btu/h, or it counts as unusually tight and needs extra fresh air. At 32,000 Btu/h that is 1,600 cubic feet, for example a 200 sq ft room with an 8 ft ceiling, or a smaller room joined to others by doorless openings.
Yes. The stove lights with a piezo igniter and runs on a standing pilot, so it heats without electricity. Only the blower needs power. Above 4,500 ft elevation the manual warns the pilot may go out.
It adds the manufacturer's MA CVF714 blower kit, the only blower approved for the Townsend II, which pushes warm air out into the room. The stove heats without it, and without power; the blower needs an outlet.
