Overview

Gas heat with no chimney or vent pipe, and it keeps working when the power is out.

The Buck Stove Model T-33 (also sold as the Premier T-33) is a vent-free gas stove made in the USA by New Buck Corporation in Spruce Pine, North Carolina. It burns natural gas or liquid propane at up to 32,000 Btu/h (22,400 Btu/h minimum), with a piezo igniter and standing pilot, so it heats without electricity. This package includes the legs and an 85 CFM heat-activated, variable-speed blower. Stand it in a room on its legs, or set it inside an existing brick or stone fireplace.

Who the T-33 is for

  • Homes that want supplemental zone heat in a living room, den or basement without running a chimney or vent.
  • Owners of a drafty masonry fireplace who want real heat from it instead of a wood fire.
  • Anyone who wants a heater that runs through power outages. Only the blower needs an outlet.

Choose your fuel

The T-33 is built for one fuel at the factory and the manual says field conversion is not permitted, so pick the version that matches your gas supply:

Fuel SKU
Natural gas T-33NG
Liquid propane T-33LP

Propane installs need an external regulator that limits tank pressure to 13" W.C. The stove connects through a 3/8" NPT inlet; run 1/2" or larger supply pipe. Hire a qualified gas installer.

Installing in a fireplace

The firebox opening must be at least 32-1/2" wide, 24" high and 12" deep. Seal or close the damper, permanently close any outside air duct or ash dump, and have the chimney and firebox cleaned first. Once the heater is in, you cannot burn wood in that fireplace.

Clearances and placement

  • 4" from side walls and the back wall (measured from the outermost point of the stove top), 48" to the ceiling.
  • Keep curtains, furniture and clothing at least 48" from the front, top and sides.
  • Set the stove on a metal or wood panel covering its full width and depth, never directly on carpet or vinyl.
  • The room needs at least 50 cubic feet per 1,000 Btu/h (1,600 cu ft at full input), or extra fresh air.

Check your local code before you buy

  • California: unvented fuel-burning room heaters are not permitted in homes.
  • Minnesota: the state fuel gas code bars unvented room heaters in any dwelling.
  • Elsewhere: under the International Fuel Gas Code, a vent-free heater cannot be your home's only heat source. Some cities and counties restrict them further or require a permit and inspection.
  • Manufacturer limits: never in a bedroom, bathroom or RV. Above 4,500 ft the pilot may go out.

Call your local building or fire department to confirm before you order.

See the owner's manual under Documents on this page for the full instructions. Compare it with the Buck Stove Townsend II on our vent-free gas stoves page.

Frequently asked questions

It depends on your state and town. California does not allow unvented fuel-burning room heaters in homes, and Minnesota's fuel gas code bars them in any dwelling. Where the International Fuel Gas Code applies, an unvented heater cannot be the only heat source in a home, must have an oxygen depletion sensor and cannot exceed 40,000 Btu/h. Some cities require a permit and inspection. The manufacturer also prohibits installation in bedrooms, bathrooms and RVs. Check with your local building or fire department before you buy.
No. The manufacturer's manual says the stove is not convertible for use with other gases, and field conversion is not permitted. Order the version that matches your supply: natural gas or liquid propane. Propane installs also need an external regulator that drops tank pressure to no more than 13" W.C.
Buck Stove does not publish a square-footage rating. The manual sizes by room volume instead: the space needs at least 50 cubic feet per 1,000 Btu/h, or it counts as unusually tight and needs extra fresh air. At 32,000 Btu/h that is 1,600 cubic feet, for example a 200 sq ft room with an 8 ft ceiling, or a smaller room joined to others by doorless openings.
Yes. The stove lights with a piezo igniter and runs on a standing pilot, so it heats without electricity. Only the blower needs power. Above 4,500 ft elevation the manual warns the pilot may go out.
Yes, in a masonry (brick or stone) fireplace with an opening at least 32-1/2" wide, 24" high and 12" deep. The damper must be sealed or closed, outside air ducts and ash dumps permanently closed, and the chimney and firebox cleaned first. Field conversion is not permitted, and you can never burn wood in that fireplace again while the heater is installed.
