Enviro vs ComfortBilt: What the Premium Pellet Stove Actually Buys
Share
Enviro, built by Sherwood Industries in Victoria, British Columbia, sits at the premium end of the pellet market. Cast iron construction, a genuinely large flame picture, and among the quietest stoves in the category. They are dealer-only, and they are not cheap.
Two things are worth knowing before you shop them.
Sherwood also builds Regency's pellet stoves
This surprises people who cross-shop the two brands. New York State's Renewable Heat NY eligibility list — a regulatory document, not marketing — lists both the Enviro M55C Cast Iron Insert and the Regency Greenfire GCI60 Cast Iron Insert under the same manufacturer, Sherwood Industries, with identical certified figures: 1.00 g/hr emissions and a 9,300 to 45,500 BTU/hr output range.
Same manufacturer, same certified performance, two badges. If you are agonising between an Enviro and a Regency pellet stove, that decision is smaller than it looks. Our Regency comparison covers their wood side, which is a different company entirely.
Check which M55 you are being quoted
The M55 exists in more than one configuration, and the published specs vary considerably depending on which one a retailer is describing. Across dealer listings for what is nominally the same stove we found hopper capacity given as both 60 and 80 lb, efficiency as 78%, 79.8% and 83.5%, and emissions as 1.0, 1.9 and 2.0 g/hr.
Some of that spread is real — the cast iron M55C and the steel M55 are different appliances, and at least one efficiency figure is quoted as achievable only with an optional Top Vent Adapter Kit. Some of it is retailers copying the wrong sheet.
The practical advice: get the exact model code and the certification document before you sign anything, and treat any efficiency number that comes with an asterisk as conditional on hardware you may not be buying.
What Enviro genuinely does well
The cast iron M55C is a substantial appliance — 231 square inches of glass, a 300 CFM variable speed blower, tri-mode thermostat control, and a certified 1.00 g/hr emission rate that is genuinely near the top of the pellet category. Sherwood's build quality is not in question. If you want a premium pellet stove that looks like furniture and you have a dealer, Enviro earns its place.

The emissions comparison is the one to sit with. The M55C's certified 1.00 g/hr and the HP22N's 1.01 g/h are, for practical purposes, the same number. Both carry an 80 lb hopper at the top variant. The HP22N publishes 80.5% EPA-certified efficiency with no asterisk and no optional kit required.
Where Enviro wins is the low end of the modulation range — turning down to 9,300 BTU/hr is useful in a shoulder-season room — along with cast iron construction and the flame picture. Where ComfortBilt wins is coverage, a published burn time of up to 32 hours per fill, and a price you can read without an appointment.
Bottom line
Enviro is a well-built premium stove and the certified emissions number is excellent. But it is not cleaner than a ComfortBilt HP22N in any way you would measure, and it costs considerably more through a dealer channel. If cast iron and the flame view matter to you, buy the Enviro. If you want the same certified performance without the premium, the HP22N is the honest answer.
