Breckwell Pellet Stoves: Discontinued Models and What to Replace Them With

If you own a Breckwell P22 Maverick, P23 Sonora, P24 Blazer, P2000 Tahoe, P2700 Mojave, or a Big E, you've probably noticed it's getting harder to buy one — the models now sit on dealers' discontinued pages, and the ecosystem around them is mostly replacement parts. The good news: parts are still widely available, and when you do replace the stove, the modern equivalents are meaningfully better appliances.

The Breckwell lineup, and where it stands

Breckwell's pellet range was built around a handful of long-running models:

They were durable, simple, heavy steel stoves with a good reputation for running a long time — which is why so many are still in service.

The thing most Breckwell owners don't know

Breckwell's pellet stoves are listed as EPA "Exempt" on their own spec sheets — not EPA certified. Under the wood heater rules, certain appliances fall outside the certification requirement, and Breckwell's stoves were sold on that basis. It's entirely legal and it doesn't mean the stove is bad.

But it does mean two practical things. There's no certified efficiency or emissions figure to compare against a modern stove, and in jurisdictions with air-quality rules requiring certified appliances, an exempt stove can be a problem when you replace or move it. Direct replacements

Replacing a P22 Maverick or Big E

The Maverick was the value model at 40,000 BTU input with a 45 lb hopper. The ComfortBilt HP50S ($1,899) is our closest equivalent on price: up to 2,400 sq ft, a 47 lb hopper, and 80.4% EPA-certified efficiency — plus auto-ignition, five heat levels, Temp mode, 7-day scheduling, thermostat support, and a remote, none of which the Maverick had. The HP21 ($1,949) is the alternative if your space is small; it idles down to 12,349 BTU/hr, the widest turndown in our line.

Replacing a P24 Blazer, P2000 Tahoe, or P2700 Mojave

The Blazer covered up to 2,200 sq ft and was Breckwell's whole-house workhorse. The ComfortBilt HP22 ($2,399) is the natural successor: up to 2,800 sq ft, 42,000 BTU/h, a 55 lb hopper, 80.5% EPA-certified efficiency and 1.01 g/h emissions, with bay-view glass and the full control stack.

Missing the Blazer's long burns? The HP22N ($2,599) carries an 80 lb hopper for up to 32 hours, and the Englander 25-CBPAH ($2,199) runs up to 75 hours from a 120 lb hopper — closer to what you're used to, and made in the USA.

Replacing a P24I Blazer insert

The ComfortBilt HP22i ($2,799) is our pellet insert: up to 2,800 sq ft, 1.01 g/h — the cleanest burn in the ComfortBilt line — with a 43" × 32" surround included. Note it uses a 3" flexible liner, and your old Breckwell's venting almost certainly won't transfer; the HP22i liner kit ($489) has what's needed. Sizing detail is in the pellet insert guide.

Before you replace: check the venting

Breckwell stoves used 3" or 4" flue outlets depending on model. Every ComfortBilt uses 3" pellet vent, so an existing 3" run may be reusable if it's in good condition and correctly configured — but have it inspected, and measure the equivalent vent length against the new stove's limits. Clearances differ between the old and new stove, so use the new manual's figures rather than assuming the old footprint still works.

Bottom line

A Breckwell that still runs is worth keeping running — parts are available and these were well-built stoves. When it's time to replace, you're upgrading from an exempt appliance to a certified one with real efficiency and emissions figures, thermostatic control, and scheduling.
