Overview

A chimney and creosote cleaner for wood stoves, inserts and fireplaces, supplied by Stove Builder International as part of the Drolet maintenance range (Rx-Cr, part number VP00401). It is used alongside regular sweeping to help break down the creosote deposits that build up inside a flue during a burning season.

Why creosote matters

Creosote is the tar-like residue left behind when wood smoke condenses on the cooler inner surfaces of a chimney or liner. It accumulates fastest when a stove is run low and smouldering, or when the firewood is not properly seasoned — a moisture meter is the quickest way to rule that out. Once deposits build up, they are the fuel for a chimney fire, which is why keeping them in check is a safety issue rather than a housekeeping one.

Use with sweeping, not instead of it

A chemical cleaner reduces and loosens deposits so they are easier to remove. It does not replace physically sweeping the flue, and it does not substitute for an annual inspection. Follow the dosage and application instructions printed on the product packaging, and continue to have the chimney swept and inspected on the schedule your local code and your stove's owner's manual set out. If you suspect heavy or glazed creosote buildup, have a certified chimney sweep look at it before running the appliance.

Related maintenance

For physical cleaning, see our stove and vent cleaning kits. To address the most common root cause of heavy creosote, a stove thermometer shows when the stove is running too cool, and checking firewood moisture before it goes in the firebox prevents the slow smouldering burn that produces the worst deposits.
